The DHCP reservation doesn't allow user to specify the full IP address range. For example, the full DHCP pool should be from 192.168.86.10-192.168.87.254:
When I tried to reserve a 192.168.87.x IP address, the second field is not modifiable:
When I reach out to support, I got served with a robot:

I'm thinking that the logical thing to do, is to specify an IP outside the DHCP pool for reserved IPs. So I reserve 192.168.86.0-10 for DHCP reservations, then 11-255 for the dynamic DHCP pool. If you need to specify more than 200 static, reserved IPs, Nest Wifi is not the product for you.
Here is the DHCP reservation guidance. A bit thin/ lacking IMO:

Have you tried 255.255.0.0 for the mask?

A /16 subnet, 65 000++ addresses. Why would I do that? I have no problems with the default LAN subnet size and IP.

Although it would *allow* for that many addresses, the DHCP range would limit it.
They advertise "up to 300 devices for the 3 pack" so it should work somehow

I think the app GUI limits editing to the last 8 bits, no matter what subnet mask or DHCP pool is set. Probably because this is an edge case, not how most would use it.

You can close this thread. I just return the product since it won't work out with my use case.
