Daily Reset of Wifi router

My Google Wifi router drops internet connection daily and requires physical power reset to bring back online. ISP modem is not touched and does not require reset. Is there a way to fix this?

Hey folks,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

Are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
Turn off IPv6.
Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,
Abi

Abi,

Thank you for your reply, however I have no idea how to do any of the things you list. Could you give detailed step by step instructions or recommend solution that non techie people can do?

Also, why would any of this be necessary? The router worked fine for 1 full year and has only just started needing reset daily.

Hi shellwcross,

I've added more details to the steps for your reference:

If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues. (You will need to seek help with your Internet Service Provider regarding this.)
Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart. (This only applies if you also have access points aside from the main Google Wifi router.)
Remove any special characters in your network name and password. (Click the links to change your network name and your network password.)
Turn off IPv6. (More details here.)
Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right. (More details here.)
Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Regards,
Abi

Thank you, Abi.  I will look into these.

In the meantime, could you answer my other question: Why would any of this be necessary? The router worked fine for 1 full year and has only just started needing reset daily.

Hey shellwcross,

The troubleshooting steps we suggested are necessary as they will help us isolate and diagnose the issue better. It’s good to hear that it has worked fine for the first year, but it’s also normal to experience hiccups every once in a while when there are certain factors involved, thus the need to troubleshoot. Let us know once you’ve tried the steps so we can monitor the results after that.

Best,

Abi
