Fast isp, fast device speed, slow download

Jayinjay24

I have a 400Mbps isp speed, and it consistently reflects as much in the google home speed test. The device speed test also reflects ~400Mbps. I have one router and one point, with a great connection. However when streaming through ccwgtv, I consistently download (according to the google home wifi) at less than 5Mbps.

I have restarted the network, as well as factory reset my nest router/point wifi and reconnected my devices. The house is only ~1800 square feet and the ccwgtv in this example is in direct line of site about 15’ from the router.

The issue is not isolated to the ccwgtv. All device speed tests are ~400Mbps, but when using them, none reach over 5-10Mbps. Streaming is reduced to SD or loading often.

Any suggestions on how to rectify this issue? Please see screen shots below.

Software versions: 13729.57.27 (router), 1.54.275951 (point)

Do you have streaming issues, does it freeze, stutter or buffer? 5mbps is sufficient for 1080p Netflix and YouTube for instance.

You could also try to disable all preferred activities, with 400mbps WAN speed you likely don't need this QoS enabled.

I don't work for Google.

Thanks, Olavrb.

Yes, it buffers often. As you can see from the download screenshot, the speed bounces between 1-5Mbps. While that may be sufficient at times to stream, theoretically, it should be downloading much faster, right? - given the isp and device speeds both reflect ~400Mbps.

Broadly, I’m looking for an explanation or theory on why download speeds are so slow and, more importantly, any suggested fixes.

I appreciate your insights though!

@olavrb I disabled preferred activities and did a restart. I wanted to give it a few hours before responding as to whether or not it had an impact. Unfortunately, the problem persists. Thank you again for the suggestion.

I’m experiencing the exact same scenario but I have 1Gb ISP, with download speeds reported between 1-5 Mb/sec

Upload reports close to 800 Mb/sec

Google. Please provide a solution.

Hey JorgeS,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

Are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

  1. If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  2. Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  3. Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  4. Turn off IPv6.
  5. Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  6. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  7. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Mel
