The Feit app requires a 2.4 GHz connection. How do i make that happen with my Google mesh router?

Hey @Jshap .

Check to see if you have WPA3 enabled on the Google Wifi under Advanced Settings; if so, turn it off. Some 2.4Ghz apps and devices cannot connect to a network using WPA3.

Thx. I do not have WPA3 enabled. The 6 lights o control were working until I updated iOS to the latest 16.3.2 version yesterday. Probably something in there that cut access off.

Thanks for the update @Jshap .

I suspect that the iOS update is the issue. It also broke Google Photos as well.

The main Nest WiFi is both 5 and 2.4, but the guest network is 2.4 only, some devices will connect better to that than the main.  Something to try

Hello @Meski

The Nest WiFi guest network supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, just like the main network. It is not 2.4GHz-only.

I got that info from here:

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Nest-Wifi/How-do-I-force-google-WiFi-to-use-2-4ghz-to-connect...

But you're quite right, it does and is connecting at 5.  It'd be nice to have it configurable to allow 2.4 only

Hello @Meski

Thanks for sending that link. It definitely supports both bands, but somehow this piece of misinformation has been repeated so many times even some of the community support staff have begun repeating it. I try to correct it every time I see it just in some hope it gets repeated less often.

As for disabling the 5GHz band (most likely temporarily), that is something I've seen discussed before. I think it would work to help get devices set up, but there are a lot of other issues to be considered (some technical, some user experience). Ultimately, devices that have trouble with this are coming from companies that have taken shortcuts in their setup process, so I'd much rather see them update their software to live in a world where systems have both bands in operation (and with 6GHz, three bands). That's not going away – it's just going to be more and more common. On the other hand, during this transition period where there are multi-band networks and some poorly designed 2.4GHz devices, it's the end users that get frustrated.

Still no luck. Tried various combinations of Google Wi-Fi settings, guest network, etc but nothing worked. I suspect is is either a Google Wi-Fi firmware change or updates to iOS, so for now I am going back to conventional lighting.

Hi Jshap,

The Google Wifi router and point use the same name for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band networks. This means that the Wi-Fi network uses both radio bands. But keep in mind: while both bands can be used, the personal devices (a smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.) will connect to only one radio band at any given time. Nest Wifi, Google Wifi, or Nest Wifi Pro attempts to select the band that will deliver the best performance for your device. Currently there is no option to manually disable either of the bands or to connect to them separately.

Give these steps a try:

Create a hotspot with a mobile phone. However, 2 mobile phones are required. Use the first device to create a hotspot (mobile phone).

How to set up a mobile hotspot:

Android

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap the Network & internet option.
  3. Select Hotspot & tethering.
  4. Tap on Wi-Fi hotspot.
  5. Set up the hotspot name and password the same as the primary network.
  6. Choose the AP Band > 2.4 GHz band > Apply.

iOS:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Cellular. Tap the slider to turn Cellular Data on.
  3. Under Cellular, tap the slider to turn Personal Hotspot on.
  4. Tap the slider next to Allow Others to Join.
  5. Set up the hotspot name password the same as the primary network.
  6. To change the hotspot password, under Personal Hotspot Wi-Fi Password.
  7. To change the hotspot name, go to Settings > General > About > Name.
  • Use the second device to connect to the mobile hotspot.
  • Disconnect all of the Google Wifi or Nest Wifi points from the power outlet.
  • Connect the device to the 2.4 GHz band of the hotspot with the same SSID and password of the current network (case sensitive).
  • Once connected to the hotspot, plug in your primary Google Wifi point or the Nest Wifi router.
  • Turn off the hotspot and check if the device automatically connects to the Google Wifi network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Abi
