Google Mesh point making motor-like noise.

I have a Google mesh hub and two points, in service about nine months. One of the points has just started to make a motor-like noise, mechanical, not audio, after previously being silent (except when addressed). Should I be concerned?

Hello dan18,

Thanks for posting. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your Google Wifi device. Just to clarify, is it a Nest Wifi point or an older generation Google Wifi router used as a point? We'll wait for your update.

Best,
Abi

I don't know the answer to your question, but the unit involved is one of two peripheral units that came with a router (Model H2D, s/n 0C241 J3AN0 XW4R if that's any help), so I suspect it's one of the newer ones.  I took a photo at the time they were put in service, but apparently I would need permissions I don't have in order to upload the .jpeg image.

In case any of this is relevant: the noise in question went away when I disconnected the unit, and did not reappear when I reinserted the power jack.  The point is still (appropriately) silent except when addressed, appears to be working appropriately, and is slightly warm to the touch even without the lights on.

Thanks -

Hi dan18,

Thanks for the update. My apologies for the late reply. I'd like to check in with you if you still hear any motor-like noise after a few days. We'll wait for your reply.

Abi

I thought I'd sent you a reply but I don't see it here so I'll repost it.

No, the sound has not reappeared.

There was an episode 48 hours ago when the unit was flashing dimly and saying "I'm having trouble connecting with the internet" but it was extremely cold, and I suspect it was, in fact, having trouble connecting with the Net. Spectrum had a lot of scattered issues that day; it was -25 C. I'd just never seen that modality of lights before.

The original sound made me think of a protesting bearing.  Does the unit have a fan in it that might have produced this?  In any case the noise hasn't been heard since.

No further recurrence of the sound that I'm aware of, I'm happy to report.

To settle my mind (and to let me not have to take it apart to find out ! ) - can you tell me whether or not there is a fan or other motor in the device that might have made the sound?

Hey dan18,

Thanks for the update. There's no fan or motor inside your Nest Wifi device so it's uncommon to hear motor sounds from it. Feel free to reply to this thread in case you have any follow-up questions. I'll be happy to help out.

Best,
Abi
