Google Nest Mesh Router Issue

sheinric
Community Member

Hello,

I have read all the other posts on this subject but doesn't seem to be working for me. I am trying to set up a Nest Router as a Point - I already have one Router as main and two actual points working properly. With this one whenever I look for it in Google Home it either recognizes it as a router or, if I add as a different device and force the Point selection it just circles back to looking for the device. Over and over again. I would note this is a router I used to use as a main elsewhere, just repurposing it - I did do a full factory reset on the device only (not in the app), so I am wondering if the app somehow remembers it.

Thanks!

Hi, sheinric.

Sorry that you're having some setup issues. I imagine that's quite frustrating. Let's take a look at this and see if we can get you all sorted out. I do have a few questions that should help us figure things out.

  • Are you setting up using an Android or iOS device?
  • When doing setup, are all your device in the same room, or are they placed where they will be used?
  • Have you tried setting the router up as a point while plugged into the ethernet port?

If you can let me know a little more about the situation, we can get this working. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks!

Hi Jeff,

No problem, its not causing me any serious heartache just want to get it working at some point (since I have it).

With respect to your questions, see as follows:

- Setup on iOS

- Yes, device is in the same room as the main router (although the two points are elsewhere)

- No, I have not actually plugged it into an ethernet port yet, only tried setting up unplugged from the port.

I think I noted this before but I do recall seeing the option to set up a router as a point when I was doing this with a different unit (the one I am using as the main now) - I have never seen that option come up with this one though.

Thanks,

Shaun

Hey, sheinric.

Sorry for the late reply here. This is an issue we've been trying to iron out for a while. I did want to check in to see if you were able to get this worked out or to see if you needed some more help. If you're still struggling with this, let me know and I can offer up some more suggestions.

Thanks.

Hello,

No, I have not resolved it yet unfortunately. The only thing I haven't tried is plugging it into an ethernet port because to do that I will be far away from the existing router so not sure if that would work (given everything else I read indicated it needs to be close to the main router first).

Thanks,

Shaun

Would it be possible to move it nearby temporarily for setup with the ethernet cable and then move it to where it will be used once it has been setup? If that's not possible, let me know.

Thanks.

Hi, sheinric.

I just wanted to check in to see if you saw my last message and to find out if that was a viable test or not.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for following up, that actually worked (connecting it to an ethernet cable), thanks!

Hey, great news sheinric. I'm happy to hear things are all sorted out and working for you.

I can go ahead and mark this as resolved, but before I do, is there anything else you might need? If so, just let me know.

Thanks.
