Google Nest Model H2D (older mesh) with CenturyLink help

Hi all,

I currently have the 1st Gen Google Nest Mesh Wifi system in my house and it works wonderfully.  I am moving in a few weeks to a rural area that only has CenturyLink DSL  (not fiber) service.  I just set up the service and the agent told me I could not use my Google Mesh system with CenturyLink.  Google help told me it does work.  Who is correct? Anybody have experience with CenturyLink DSL?

Also, if it should or does work, do I still need CenturyLink's old school modem/router they say I NEED? Or can I use the Google mesh router?

Thanks,

Brian

Hi there Surfnsnowboard3,

Thanks for reaching out to our community.

Router and network service compatibility can be confusing, but don't worry! Let's figure it out together so you can make the most of your network.

Your Google WiFi router and points are compatible with CenturyLink's DSL internet service. However, you might encounter some setup challenges to get them working together.

Unfortunately, I can't provide specific setup instructions because CenturyLink DSL uses VLAN tagging 201, while Google routers only support VLAN tag values of 2 and 10. The best solution is to use a managed switch between your modem and router to untag the network before it reaches the main Google router. It's important to note that this could potentially decrease your internet speed.

Some users have reported success by changing the WAN settings to PPPoE and adding the PPPoE credentials provided by CenturyLink.

Remember, to avoid connection problems, your Google WiFi unit or your CenturyLink modem/router should be in bridge mode.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,
Angel.
