Google Nest Wi-Fi - TV connecting to hub not local point

PhilC

Hi - we’re running a Google Nest Wi-Fi - with Hub + 1 point.

The point is next to our TV, however the TV connects to the main hub in another room - which leads to a poor connection and the TV buffering.

Is there any way to force the TV to connect to the Wi-Fi hub that is right next to it? As these are the second gen units the point doesn’t have an Ethernet connection.

Hi PhilC,

Thanks for reaching out. WiFi devices decide which access point to connect to, and when to switch between them. You could try rebooting your TV and check if it automatically connects to the nearest point.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward,

Thanks for checking in, the TV is still behaving the same way, resetting it helps it connect to the nearer point (next to the TV) but it some switches back to the more distant point (other side of the house) - had to reset it x5 times last night during 1 film we were streaming.

I’ve been researching online, I don’t think I have any options other than a reset, unfortunately because the nest points don’t have Ethernet connection I can’t hard wire it either. I’m thinking of switching away from Google Nest to a mesh with Ethernet ports on the points as that would solve the issue - any recommendations?

Hi, PhilC.

I just wanted to check in to see if you were still seeing this issue. While there's no way to force a device to connect to a specific point, generally this happens due to network conditions making the system prefer one point over the other. I personally had this going on where a point in my bedroom did not connect to the TV in the same room, but rather the TV would connect to a point downstairs. It was driving me crazy for a while. I ended up moving my points around a little bit and resetting my network. In the end, I got the connections as I wanted them, but also learned a bit in the process. I realized that my Chromecast actually had a better line going down to the router in the room below than it did to the point across the room. The point in the room had the TV between it and the Chromecast and was close to the same distance as the point straight below. While your setup might differ a bit, there are factors (distance, number of devices connected to a point already, signal interference) that can make it seem like the "wrong" point is being chosen at times.

If you're still wanting to take a look at this, please let me know. I know it's been a while since the last post, but I'll be happy to keep looking at this if you would like to.

Thanks.
