Google Nest points not connecting to Google router

Louplet
Community Member

I factory reset my Google router and now my Nest points won't connect to it. I have tried factory resetting them but that doesn't work. They connect to my phone for setup but then will not connect to the router. See screenshots. Other devices are on the WiFi ok. Just the Nest points that are a problem.

I have tried factory resetting the Nest points and also tried any other suggestions I could find online eg disabling cloud services but nothing is working. Any advice?

Try to disable IPv6 during setup (Wifi -> Network settings -> Advanced networking). Enable it afterwards if you want it enabled.

Could also help to keep the unit close to the main/master/primary unit during setup, then move it afterwards.

Thank you for your response. I tried disabling IPv6 already and it then told me on Home app it couldn't communicate with the nest points. I also tried moving one of the points close to the router but still didn't work.

Hmm, strange that disabling IPv6 triggered that message. Did you emable the cloud services again?

You don't have a VPN enabled on the device used for setup do you? Or DuckDuckGo App Tracking Protection or similar? Disable that.

Also make sure the Google Home app has Android permissions to "Location" and "Nearby devices".

If those things does not help: Can you try the Google Home app with the same Google account from a different Android, iOS or iPadOS device?

Hmm. I reenabled IPv6 but same error message! Tried both with and without cloud services enabled.

No VPN or tracking.

Will try different device now.

Location and nearby devices on.

Weird. On my tablet the Nest points appear under devices but listed as offline. My phone is also listed as offline, which it is not.

Did you delete the old network from Google Home before you started setting things up? Maybe try to start from scratch again, by deleting the Nest Wifi network from Google Home first.

What modem/ISP box do you have? Do you know if it acts as a router too? Nest Wifi sometimes works bad with double NAT, bridging whatever is in front of it can fix strange issues.

I didn't delete the network just factory reset network. How do I delete

I have Kcom modem and separate Kcom router plus the Google router

So double NAT. Not recommended. Consider to drop the Kcom router if you don't need it.

I'm out of tips for you to try now. I hope you'll figure it out.

Sorry. I was away from home for a few days. I tried deleting Home and starting again but the WiFi points still won't connect. What happens if I remove the KCom router? Don't I need that as they are my broadband supplier?

Also I have various other devices plugged into the KCom router so not sure how bridging would work with these

If you bridge the ISP gear, you'd have to move the wired stuff behind Nest Wifi. To get more than one LAN port, just add an unmanaged switch. Diagram example:

Great. Thanks. Have ordered a Netgear GS108. Will let you know if this works when it arrives.

I have set everything up but I still can't get it to work. When I set the KCom router to bridge mode the Google router then flashes yellow. The different settings for the KCom router are quite complicated. I don't know if I need to change anything else. Tried asking them and they couldn't help!!!!

Also tried taking out the KCom router altogether and attaching Google router directly to modem but it doesn't connect and I am not sure what to do to rectify this.

Hi there Louplet,

Please share the message that you are getting during setup when your Google Wifi is connected directly to the modem. Also, do a 2-minute power cycle on your entire network before going through configuration again. Here's how:

  1. Disconnect the power from the modem.
  2. Disconnect the Ethernet cable and power cord from the parent point.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the child points.
  4. Leave everything unplugged for 2 minutes.
  5. Connect the power from the modem to your router and points.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

Lovely

Hi. When connected directly to modem the light on the Google router just pulses slowly yellow. All cables are fine. I have also tried changing settings on router in the home app as per my ISP but they won't save so not sure if this is doing anything. With ISP router in bridge mode it says the Google router is connected but has no internet access.

Hey Louplet,

Sorry for the late response. Please use an unmanaged switch in between the modem and the Google Nest Wifi router before going through the setup process. Let me know if you are still having issues.

Cheers,
Lovely

Set up as in photos. Always worked fine until recently when KCom upgraded the system!

Thanks for all your help @olavrb much appreciated
