Google Nest router slow speed

Laketyme
Community Member

I upgraded my internet to fiber and I am getting 500mbs  directly from the modem but from my nest router, sometimes it's 250mbs, then it goes to 80 mbs. It seems to average 100mbs. And this is when I'm right next to the router. From what I'm seeing this seems to be a common issue. I like the nest mesh system but need it to speed up. I have unplugged, replugged, etc. If I run the modem directly to a computer via ethernet, I get 500 + mbs but plugging it back into the google nest, back  down to the slow speeds. Any suggestions?

I've had the original 3 puck google wifi system for several years, never needed restarts, but starting back around may/june 2022 the speeds would slow from 100mbps to less than 20mbps over a day or two. rebooting the puck connected to our modem immediately restores it back to 100mbps, also using the Google home app - wifi - run speed test will restore it back to 100mbps which is easier & faster than rebooting. Google can you fix this? other forums are reporting this same issue.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

A few questions: Are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
Turn off IPv6.
Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,
Abi

Hi folks,

I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Have you had the chance to try the suggestion above? If yes, how is it?

Thanks,
Abi

my setup is a cable modem, no router into one of three AC1304 pucks, IP6 was already off, DNS is set to automatic (isp dns). I had reset things this morning to get back to 100mbps down... now 12 hrs later desktop chrome speedtest shows 42mbps down, 10mbps up.  just running the 'Run speed test' in the google home mobile app resets things again and chrome speedtest is back to 100mbps down, 11mbps up.   this slowdown degradation is something that started a few months ago and why does re-running the speed test in the mobile app temporarily clear the slowdown issue?

Hey bgilly,

Thanks for getting back to us ― let's try changing your DNS. Here's how:

Open your Google Home app.
Tap Wi-Fi >  Settings> Advanced Networking
Tap DNS.
Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server.
Tap Save.

Restart your network after that and let us know how it goes.

Best,
Abi

I updated the Google DNS values mentioned above and rebooted all pucks, validated after reboot that speeds were restored, 100mbps down, 11 mbps up.

just now, approx 20 hrs after the change/rebooting the pucks the speed test in desktop chrome is 26 mbps down, 7 mbps up. validated with multiple speed test runs.

then I 'Run speed test' within the Google Home app and speed tests return to 100 mbps down, 11 up.

Hey bgiilly,

Can you try running the speed test using a 3rd party test? Give it a try on something like https://goo.gle/2QXCbe1 and share how those results show and we can compare a few things.

Thanks,

Jeff

that speed test link performs better 50mbps down/7mbps up, than the built in google chrome option shown in chrome search results for speedtest which are now down to 4mbps down, 9mbps up, internet performance is noticeably slower/pausing/buffering this morning.

then once I run the 'Run speed test' in the wifi section of the mobile Google Home app performance returns to 100mbps down, 10mbps up

Hi bgilly,

Are there any special characters on your network name or password? If yes, please remove it and create a new network name or password. Reconnect your devices and do another speed test. Here's how:

Change Wi-Fi network name
Change Wi-Fi password

Let us know how it goes.

Abi

there were no special chars in the network name, the password has always had special chars for years while it worked without slowdowns. Others are reporting this same slowdown issue. I'm finally at the point that I need to replace these units with a different brand, no reply is necessary.
