Hi all,
Like the title, says, my 500/500 Fiber Internet is getting throttled by the Google WiFi mesh system to about 100/100 or 90/90 -- all wired connections and wireless connections are affected.
Interestingly, the Home app speed tests all show the correct speeds, usually around 485/490 which is correct. But a speed test with the puck wired directly to my PC is showing the throttled 90/90 or 100/100 speeds.
A network restart (Google WiFi puck restart) initiated through the Home app fixes the problem temporarily. All devices then get the correct speeds, wired and wireless. Unfortunately, a day or max 2 days later, the same thing happens again - throttled speeds down to 100/100. Tried my other router, no issues. Tried directly from the ONT, no issue.
This is not a DNS issue or anything like that, it seems like a strange software issue. What can be done? Is there a fix in place?

I too have this problem, you can temporarily workaround it by running a speed test from the Google Home app. You will need to do this at least twice a day. I paid a lot of money for my multiple AP's, I expect better.
Google Wifi has been suffering with this problem since 2021. The firmware update in 2022 did nothing to change the issue. The issue still persists in 2023. As it has now been over 2 years, I think I should speak frankly for the benefit of your customers waiting in vain for a fix.
It is obvious that your development team has no idea what is wrong. They have no idea how to troubleshoot it, and therefore there is no possibility of a fix in a near time frame; or worse, they know they have a hardware issue and can't fix it. The best advise I can give your customers is to go buy something that works, built by a team that knows what they are doing..
The best advise I can give Google, is hire a consultant who specializes in trouble shooting, who understands the full IP stack, iptables, traffic control and QoS. That is assuming you have not already found the root cause and decided it is too difficult to fix.
Google - Do better!

I've been following this thread for a year+, with the same issues (pay for gigabit, download speeds randomly seem throttled to ~50-90mb/s). Thinking instead of investing in a replacement Deco system I may bite the bullet and upgrade to Ubiquiti Unifi. It's hard to believe this hash been moved to the back-burner for so long.

Over all google is not apple. Googles hardware is just second rate. I have three google hardware products that simply do not work as advertised. Their costumer service is ok, but if the hardware just doesn’t work their is nothing that can be done.

The Deco has been amazing! Totally worth it. Does exactly what you expect.

I have since purchased an Eero Pro 6E triband mesh system. Works beautifully. My only beef is Amazon wants a subscription for the family controls and filtering. From a network performance perspective, the internet link speed is constantly at +900Mbps upload and download, no throttling. I have not had to reset the system once in the month I have had it.

Same here! I'm having this issue as well. If I run ethernet directly from the fiber port or directly from my wall to my computer, I get 500-500mbps both up and down (Frontier Fiber ISP), but when I run ethernet from the Google Wifi unit's LAN port to my computer, or Wifi itself, I seem to be limited to 90-95mbps.

I think google should be considering replacing these things. They clearly don’t work as sold to costumers.

Let's hit them in their wallet. Go to Best Buy and other retailers websites and give the Google Mesh a 1 star review with remarks. If enough of us do this they may take notice!

Im an engineer. So .. old router. 500-600 mbs at the source, 75 feet away on opposite side of the house ~10.
With google, two routers with one set as a second point, 90-95 everywhere. Cool i can live with that but expected more.
In this entire thread, i assume.everyone else is having similar results, no where did I see if this is the expected results????? Comment??? Rather than oh hey set your dns to blah blah.. make sure you use a better vord than the one we gave you blah blah . Even on your ads for the product you dont really broadcast expectations of what we all had to what your product offers.

We filled out the form. What's next? I haven't heard anything back. I have had the EXACT same symptoms from Google Wifi puck provided & set up by Google, Google Nest, Netgear AX, TP Link Deco, & now Google Nest Pro. I have reset; toggled all options & manual & auto DNS in all cases as instructed by Google support. This has been going on for 18 months. Now that I have done all this & the behavior never changes, it's time for Google to investigate the fiber jack or the service. I'm done going through the, start from scratch approach the service reps give me every time I call. It wastes hours & never resolves. They seem to think that if they can get you to turn it off & turn it back on & the speed is OK for a moment, that they fixed it. It will lose connection & reconnect at throttled speed any time between 5 minutes or a week - every single time. The CAUSE must be addressed by Google.

I’m having the same issue. 1.2gbps to the modem and 547mbps from my nest WiFi pro.

I opened another thread on this and it was locked. seriously, has there been any progress or any new developments on this issue.

This is beyond ridiculous - clear issue for the past 2 years with no fix in sight. A recall of the hardware is long over due and as many have stated already, this has impacted trust in Google products. I won't be purchasing another Google / Nest product again and will be advising all to stay well clear.
What a shame!

Side note- my Ubiquiti UniFi products have been working flawlessly since deployed. I should have made this investment instead of Nest from day 1.
10-31-2023 12:49 AM
Interesting, a quick google and the Ubiquiti UniFi look quite a commercially minded option, any chance you could recommend the product you went for? I have given up on these so clearly need something new. There are so many posts on various similar threads to this one that it starts to feel like some independent body should care about this. I have bought three reasonably expensive bits of tech from one of the biggest companies in the world and they simply don't work.....
11-11-2023 04:07 PM
I bought the Eero Pro 6e and am happy with the performance. The access controls are adequate. The family controls are a subscription based service, which I have not currently subscribed to. I have had no complaints from the family about laggy internet in the last 6 months since I received the Eero.

No fix yet at the end of 2023??
12-08-2023 08:19 AM
I’ll never buy another Google product after this BS…we upgraded to TP-Link Deco and haven’t had a single issue.
12-11-2023 09:58 AM
Issue is still happening for me. I'm going to buy a different mesh device network and move on. How can a company the size of google offer such poor support and have ongoing issues for years! There has not been a firmware update on this device since 9/2022 more than 1 year later and my speeds are about 10mbps when i have direct fiber to my home.
12-11-2023 10:05 AM
To give credit where credit is due.. without seeing any reason why and without doing anything new.. in the last few weeks im now getting well over 390mbs throughout the house when i was also throttled for many months at 100. So possibly they are correcting the issue slowly but surely

Okay everyone, I figured out the fix with NO help from Google for my hardwired desktop speeds! For my Frontier internet system I installed a Netgear 5 port gigabit ethernet unmanaged switch on my system and now have speeds of 512/513! These speeds are what I am paying for. A simple fix. Hope this can help others who have this problem and have received no help from Google. Let others know if you have success with this fix. See Ya. 🙂

Can you expand on the fix? It's not clear where you've installed the Netgear 5 port switch. Is it between the Google router and your internet modem? Is it between your computer and the google router? Do wifi connected devices that were previously throttled also now go full speed? The suggested fix seems odd, but very keen to learn more on what you've fixed exactly and how.
Thanks!

Nothing special. Just follow the wiring instructions on the switch. It fixed my hard wired desktop computer. The wifi devises never run as fast as the hard wired connected devises.

I'm also having this issue with my nest router. Supposed to be getting 900mbs... Getting 130ish...on a variety of speed tests. Connecting via a different router gives me the full speed.
I saw a fix online which says to prioritise any network device..which I did and this unlocked the speed. Btw, that was a separate device to the one I was doing the speed test on.
All devices are now full speed. Weird software issue it seems like... Surprised not a single fix in 3 years. It has something to do with your priority device feature. E.g without prioritising it's capping everything. When you prioritise any device it uncaps everything. Weird...
