Google Wifi Mesh hardwiring installation help

I have a Google Wifi system (3 pucks). I want to hard wire them as I have ethernet cables going to the main rooms in my house. I can't find a clear explanation online on how to install this. To be clear, I am not trying to create a wifi mesh as such. I just need wifi in the main rooms.

Trying to describe my situation:

1. In room A I have a bunch of wires coming out of the panel. This is where my main ethernet cable comes in and where I connected this main cable to the ONT port on my ATT router. This is working just find where I am able to pick up wifi signal without Google Wifi installed.

2. In this room A, I have about 5 ethernet cables hanging lose. I labelled them so I know to which room they run to. I am going to call the rooms "room B" and "room C". I want to get room B and C hardwired to the wifi pucks (puck B and puck C).

My questions:

1. I plugged in puck A (in room A) straight in the ATT router. Do I need to put another ethernet cable into Puck A (to a switch or something)?  Alternatively, could I place puck A in another room (let's call it room D)?

2. Do I just plug in puck B in room B and puck C in room C without using the app? When I installed those with the app they seem not to use the ethernet cable but rather the wifi mesh which I don't want due to stability issues.

3. If I need to buy an unmanaged switch, any stable/cheap recommendations.

4. If I need a switch, can you tell me which cable goes where. Please be very descriptive as I am not an expert.

Hi @daviedl,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand you'd like to know how to properly set up your Google Wifi devices as a mesh network with a hardwired installation. I also appreciate the information provided about the wiring you have in your room A, where your main Ethernet cable comes in and where you connected the main cable to the ONT port on your ATT router. I'm happy to assist you.

Since there are many things that would vary in order to have a hardwired setup for your Google Wifi devices, please provide the information requested below:

  • Do you use a modem and router combo provided by your internet service provider?
    • Note: To set up a mesh network wirelessly or hardwired with your Google Wifi devices, you can't have more than one router providing a Wi-Fi signal in addition to the Google Wifi ones.
  • Are your Google Wifi devices already set up through the Google Home app?

While setting up Google Wifi devices as hardwired is allowed, I recommend you check the article Hardwire Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi, or Google Wifi with Ethernet. There, you can find all the necessary information, including things to avoid, key terms for hardwiring your network, compatibility, supported setups, and setups to avoid.

Another important point is that users shouldn't connect the access points to upstream routers or switches. This prevents the detection of the Wi-Fi device during setup because the router receives an IP address outside of the Google Wifi network's range.

The article above contains a lot of information to confirm and verify. I've shared it with you in the hope that it will address your concern.

Please keep me posted.

Regards,

Anders
