Google Wifi router (AC-1304) only works on a wired connection

I've been trying to add an old gen 1 Google wifi router (model # AC-1304) to my Nest Wifi mesh network. I am unable to add it to the network via WiFi as I keep getting an error message telling me my router is "out of range" although the two devices are literally next to each other. Interestingly, I am able to add the router to the mesh network using an ethernet cable but as soon as I disconnect the cable, the router goes offline.

Has anyone run into this issue? If so, how can I resolve it? Thanks in advance!

I forgot to add that my Gen 1 router is running on the latest firmware version (14150.43.81)

Hi jawxies,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with adding another point. I'd love to know more about this and I have a few questions:

  • Is the upstream device a modem, or a modem and router combo?
  • Are there any switches in your network?
  • Are you using the device in the same country it was purchased?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Edward

Hello, thank you for your reply. The upstream device is a TP-LINK E4 modem/router which connects via PPPoE to my Nokia modem.  There are no switches on my network and I purchased my Google WiFi Router in France but I'm trying to use it in South Africa. Could this be the problem?

I'm attaching a quick diagram of my current set up : https://shorturl.at/mopS5

Any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated!

Hi jawxies,

Thanks for the response. It's possible that that's the issue. Devices intended for another country won't mesh together if the separate countries don't support the same 5 GHz mesh channel.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward, is there a way to work around this problem or do I just need to give up trying to make it work?

Thank

Hi jawxies,

I'm afraid we don't have an option to get around this as this has something to do with the regulatory rules for the 5GHz band in each country.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward, is there a way to know which Google Wifi Routers work in which countries? I'm in South Africa and if you are correct in identifying the 5 Ghz spectrum limitation as the source of the problem with my Google Wifi Router, then it's weird that the Google Nest Wifi router that I'm also using and which was purchased in the US seems to be working fine. It would save me a lot of time to know which models work in which countries.

Thanks

Hi jawxies,

Here's a link to device availability and compatibility for each device Google sells: https://goo.gle/35J8nGn. If a device is not listed, it doesn't mean it won't work, but it may not work fully or there could be limitations on the device. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Jeff

Thanks Jeff. We can close this thread and I can go buy a new Google Nest router that's "spectrum compatible".
