Google wifi is providing half the speed of my modem’s wifi. App shows no other usage, no mesh issues

I have 400 mbps internet. My phone is showing 190 on a speed test app I installed. If I change to my modem’s wifi I stead of Google Wifi I get over 400.

This is not correct behavior. I looked in the Google Home app and ran a mesh test with no issue. I see the Google wifi is receiving 445 mbps download.

The whole reason I bought Google wifi was to improve speed and reliability. Why on earth is it slowing me down? Can I correct this or get a refund?

Maybe I'm thinking in too simplistic of terms, but is there any way for some of us to revert to a firmware that predates the issue?  I'd be happy to roll back to something in Q2 2021.

As of today my WiFi speed has returned to normal. I ran multiple speed tests using Google home app. 😀

No such luck here. Google Home app shows download speed into router as 880 MHz but standing 2 feet away over wi-fi with my iPhone, I am getting 500.  FYI - I am piggybacked of my xfinity router which is receiving over 900 so some minor loss between the two.

Any idea what may have changed?

I'm getting 92 out of 100 mbps down now which is probably what I was at before this bug

I've been monitoring things pretty closely over the past few days to see if things improve. Here's what I can share. I'll share more as I monitor things but I wish it would just "work", you know?

Direct from Xfinity modem (according to Google Home app test): 744 Mbps down / 40.5 up

MacBook Pro test (3 yr old platform, current OS):

  • 162 down, 4 up (3 inches from Google Mesh router, wired to Xfinity modem. Note: this is a NEW Google version 3 device; see below for more details)
  • 160 down, 14 up (~ 30 feet from access point

iPhone12 (latest OS)

  • 372 Mbps down 7.3 up (3" away from router, airplane mode/wifi only)
  • 151 down / 9.7 (~75 feet from closest router and a known "trouble spot" for my traditionally)

Bottom line at this point:

  • It's better, depending on the device you're using (i.e. the wifi hw/sw for a device seems to vary wildly
  • I'm still seeing significant "lossiness" / degradation of performance, even right next to the router
  • If I was paying for 100Mbps broadband, I'd been struggling to get by with the performance (another way to look at it... I shouldn't HAVE to pay for 750+ just to get 50 in some places either)
  • With the new Google Nest Wifi, things "seem" to be faster/better, but it's hard to quantify in a mixed Gen 3/Gen 2environment (and I'm not willing to tear apart my network to revert to G2 to "see if" it's better from a software update
  • Software update: boy - it sure would be nice to see a log of what's been pushed down the wire to the devices... no way to know otherwise.

Note:

  • Because of my existing investment in Google mesh (and unique aspects of my home), I decided to buy (2) Goodle Next routers to integrate with existing Google Mesh v2 devices. Some independent reviews suggested that the new devices were substantially better, and because the old work with the new, it make more sense to update than replace entire house with net-new gear

turn the points off and just do s speed test wit the nest router, watch it gets better, the points are bad with speed,

Mine is super slow too now.  Router Wi-Fi connection much faster than google Wi-Fi connection

Like all above Mesh owners, my mesh is delivering half the speed of internet provided by ISP ( 100/40Mbps).

My Model: H2D, software version 13729.57.27

When will I have the firmware updated?

Will the new firmware fix this problem?

Its a shame I had hope on google hardware.

Latest measurements ....

Download into Google Nest Router is 856 Mbps

Download to iPhone 6" from router is 519 Mbps (using Speedtest app)

Download to iPhone 6" from point is 104 Mbps. I tested the router to point connection and got "Great Connection" using the Google Home app.

Of course, performance degrades as you move away from the router or point where it is far more likely a person is downloading from.

My Model: H2D, software version 13729.57.27

Any chance of an update on resolution from Google?

Wish I'd seen this thread before buying... Just splashed out on the nest hub and two points and seems i'm inflicted by these same issues and have just spent half a day 'troubleshooting' and got nowhere other than proving it's the google nest equipment (hub and 2 points) that are the blockage here. Getting 450-500 Mbps down/45 up on my 'free' ISP router-modem yet I cannot get above 50Mbps down no matter what I do using the Google equipment.

Does the firmware fix mentioned mentioned above that's being rolled out actually fix the issue/have people seen it resolve? Have bought all the shiny add-ons (nest cams/hub max) etc so would like to keep it all for ease of integration, but end of my tether/about to return the nest hub and points at the minimum - if the fix is definitely near/confirmed working then i can make do for a few weeks?

Interestingly (and of course I see it 5 minutes after posting the above!) I just read in another thread how prioritising a device is a workaround (albeit an annoying one as you can only do it per device and for 8 hours at a time) - just did a speed test before and after and got 44Mbps down before and 460Mbps down after prioritising so there's some really dodgy throttling/shaping/QoS-ing going on... Again, if anyone can confirm they've received the firmware update/that it fixes things i'd love to hear as it'll save me a return and head scratching about setup etc - thanks in advance!

Jeff, can you please tell us what firmware rev fixes this problem? Also, any insight as to when it will be pushed to members of this group? Thanks.

I just bought the 3 pack today as the associate at BB told me they work great. I asked if I would lose any speed and he said that his works fine and with no speed loss. I set it up today and everything went as expected until I tested speeds. I ran speeds tests while sitting next to the Spectrum router and the primary Google Point and Spectrum was around 420 and Google less than 200. Doesn't look like there will be a fix in the next 14 days so I'll probably return the kit this week.

I’ve had this problem for a whiLe now, but I figured it out how to get your full speed, you have to go and prioritize the device you are using or doing the speedtest with in your google home and then try to do the test, it will give you your full speed, but only on the device you prioritized.

Same issue. I'm getting maximum of 290 Mbps on an internet plan of 500 Mbps by my ISP (during work hours). Yet on the same laptop during the evening I never had it higher than 150 Mbps, and on my iPhone it's even worse - 44 Mbps. My router seems to already be on the latest firmware version (14150.43.80). What should I do?

Hi i have just bought 9 google wifi and now i am having regrets on investing this much on a item that seem to only give half the speed which is 250mbps on mesh on wired which fi test it on my modem or other router gives exact amount of 380mbps or 450mbps. I i cant wait for you guys to fix this issue as i’ve noticed i am not alone in this issue.

I am beginning to think they have no intention of fixing anything.

memusMG

I have the same issue with getting max speed to 500Mbps instead of 1Gbps but what i figure out is that when i use (modem <--pppoe--> google wifi) it seems there is a problem but if i add  additional router between modem and router: (modem <--pppoe--> other router <---> google wifi) i am getting full speed. Maybe it is a pppoe issue? The other thing is that google support told me that it might be a problem with vlan connection between modem and google wifi router but when i asked my ISP they said there is not vlan so i don't know what is the problem but this is what i observed so far.

So of course I found this thread after my nest mesh network arrived today and I installed it only to realize I'm pulling half the speeds. If there is no fix I'm going to return for TP-Link.

Currently running version 14150.43.81

Comcast Router - 367.3 DL / 22.4 UL

Nest Mesh - 122.7 DL / 21.8 UL

I too am having the same issue. My Home App shows 450mbps to the nest router and my speed test is showing low 200’s on my devices.

Wingfan13

I get 912 Down on ethernet

284 on wifi

That is a big difference

Running version 14150.43.81 and still facing the same issue after years of having these Google Wifi units.

Please advise on when a fix will be implemented or if one will be available at all, thank you.

I am also having the same issues and I just bought this system (3 set) yesterday. It auto updated to .81 but it shows I have 450Mbps at router but on wi-fi I am lucky to get 50Mbps standing next to it. What's the next move?

I am also pppoe connection

Hi,

I Also have the same issues, 560 download to router but only 150 through nest WiFi, disaster after spending so much money on them ( I have 6 nest WiFi points)

karmap

Yep, same issues. 890Mbps in the router and only 450~Mbps on the PC, which is 2ft away from the router, in direct line of sight.

Wingfan13

I am 14150.43.81 with no change in speed.

Checked mine, same SW version paying for 500 and not even getting 200 through this outdated hardware. What a scam.

Thought I'd go a different way after getting the fiber modem installed since the Google Wi-Fi mesh setup was maxing at 200. Pulled out Google Wi-Fi and the three Wi-Fi points from around the house and just installed an ASUS AX570. Consistently getting down 450-500 on my laptop downstairs now. Putting the Google hockey pucks out on ebay for someone else to hopefully take off my hands.

I have the update.  I've set my desktop to priority.  I have switched cables. My Router is getting 433 and 22 up shown on Google Home.  Mesh test no issues.

My desktop 30 feet away is getting 114.5 down 22. 56 up  if I plug it into the point it gets 115.4 and 21.89

my pixel6 pro sitting in front of my desktop 142 down 5.58up

my pixel 6 pro in front of the router 382

Since I posted last the only change I've experienced is my Pixel3XL changed to a 6Pro 😉

Hi @Jeff,

I bought my google Wifi 2 years ago, and I have never got my full internet speed.

It is so disappointing, will this new update fix the issue? I don’t know what to do anymore. Google shouldn’t sell a device that has a known issue.

Thanks

I updated to firmware 14150.43.81 and still having issue.

sgw

Have exactly the same issue as everybody else...i am supposed to get 500mbps (the speedtest from the google nest app shows 500+), but I only get 300 MAX even when standing right next to my router connected to the modem with no interference. Up to 500mbps download for this hardware is false advertisement and consumers will sue!

I updated my parents mesh to firmware 14150.43.81 and they still having issue of exact half speed.

goldenman82

Found this thread. I'm experiencing the same issue. Speed test from the home app shows internet speed of 853 Mbps and when I run from a device on the network I get considerably slower 250 Mbps down (tested multiple devices).  I've tried the suggestions below with no noticeable changes.

I’m experiencing the same issue, I’m getting the half of the speed in the router, I tested everything in my ISP modem and all is ok.

one stuff I tested is a factory reset to my route and when it boots up after reset I get 100% of the speed, some minutes after the issue happens again, I still don’t know what is causing this, I tested many times and every time I factory reset the router it works and then issue happens again,

vertizcristian
Community Member

I could reproduce the issue again, I factory reseted all my devices, when I set up my router it gives 100% of the speed in speedtest.net, when ai execure the home app speed test it returns the half, after that speedtest.net returns the half as well

Update: I reseted my router, and I’m avoiding to execute home app speed test and for now I’m getting 100% of the speed, the issue seems to be related to home app speed test

vertizcristian
Community Member

As of today, I'm still getting 100% of the speed, after I reset all my mesh, I never used Google Home app speed test, so I can confirm that this issue is very related to Home app speed test
