Google wifi is providing half the speed of my modem’s wifi. App shows no other usage, no mesh issues

I have 400 mbps internet. My phone is showing 190 on a speed test app I installed. If I change to my modem’s wifi I stead of Google Wifi I get over 400.

This is not correct behavior. I looked in the Google Home app and ran a mesh test with no issue. I see the Google wifi is receiving 445 mbps download.

The whole reason I bought Google wifi was to improve speed and reliability. Why on earth is it slowing me down? Can I correct this or get a refund?

You might be able to use a router but if it is older, I'd spend the $30 to $50 and get a 1gbps dumb switch. I agree, this is not ideal but it's been working well so far.

This actually works. I just connect two ports of my Google Nest router to the ethernet modem (with the same type of ports). Technically, one wire from ethernet modem --> Nest router, then 1 wire back from Nest router --> back to the ethernet modem, and my internet speed was bumped up from 20Mbs to 400Mbs. Thank you for sharing.

Hi what settings did you put on your modem in this scenario?

I'm not sure what settings you are looking for. I pretty much keep my nest router as the default setting, I only changed the name and the password. what I have is:

1. Main Spectrum router (can't provide wifi and only has one port out to the wifi router)

2. A Spectrum dumb wifi router (has 1 port for internet in from the main router, and 4 ports output for other devices)

3. A Nest router (which you already knew that it has one port for internet in and one for output)

so my setup is Main router --> Spectrum dumb wifi router --> Nest router through the #1 output port --> back to the Spectrum dumb wifi router to output port #2 on the dumb router.

Somehow it works, funny enough.

Thanks I'm going to try something similar tomorrow.

To confirm, your home devices are connected via the Google mesh and not the spectrum router?

Do you get maximum potential after doing this ?

This is a good workaround if you don't have a lot of devices you want to wire into your network and just need wifi. Nice work!

Yeah, the only device that I need to plug in using wire is the printer, so it works out.

Wouldn't this cause an IP conflict by feeding the network back in on itself?

I'm supposed it would, but I really don't really know how it works, just funny lol

Are your devices connected wifi to the dumb router or to google?

Funny how using a dumb router or switch to confused google actually fixes the issue.

Like I explained to someone above how I did it. Here is what I have:

My dumb wifi is super fast and I have been using it because the Nest wifi is weak. I saw this video and I just wanted to try if it can fix the nest wifi, and I did test the internet speed when I connected to the google nest wife.

I followed these exact steps and this did not work for me 😞

having the same problem. was previously on  ADSL with low speed and the mesh did a pretty good job of distribution of the bandwidth around the house. now on full fibre and it's actually worse in some rooms! did not realise the extent of this problem until I found this thread

I am having the same issue! 776mb/s on the modem, 30-50mb/s on the mesh Wi-Fi, and I have a total of three points in a small 1100 sq single story home.

Hey everyone,

Give these steps a try:

  1. If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  2. Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  3. Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  4. Turn off IPv6.
  5. Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  6. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  7. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Mel

Doesn't make a difference. I reconfigured my Ethernet cables the other day and it worked for about 24 hours. Back to the same nonsense again.

Mel, everything you've suggested has been tried multiple times I'm sure by multiple people, it hasn't fixed anything.

I have having the same issue:

I'm having the same issue as this thread. I have 3 Wifi Points with a measured on the Home app speeds of 850Mbps down and 40 Mbps up.

On a wifi connected devices close to the main point, I get 90 Mbps down and 15 up.

I replaced the cable between my Xfinity router and the main wifi point with a Cat6 cable, I set the DNS to Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, I turned off, but it was already off IPv6

SW version on the initial point of 14150.376.32

I submitted the form a few days ago.

How about fix your throttling.

No two ways about it, Google throttle all wifi connections. I switched router and it worked as expected immediately.

Returned for warranty refund. Cya

I’ve done these steps completely just now. DL at the modem is 690mb/s. Download over mesh Wi-Fi points is 140mb/s.

Hi Mel,

The above steps did not work.

Hi all, for what’s worth my issue magically fixed itself a few weeks ago now. I now get 100 mbps on the google network as well as my TP link modem network, which is what I’m paying for. For the last few months only managing 20 mbps on the google network. I’d tried everything and had given up but it just fixed itself, funnily enough on the day I ordered a new Tp link mesh system which I am hesitant to return just yet in case. So far so good though. Also be aware the google Home App speed tests are misleading, and will only return about a fifth the speed results of trusted sites like Ookla or fast.com.

Hey Beeman,

Awesome — glad to hear that your issue is fixed. It looks like we can consider this one complete, so I will lock the thread shortly unless I can help out with anything else.

Best,
Mel

DO NOT LOCK THIS THREAD. It is incredibly inconsiderate of you to lock this thread when there are hundreds of users experiencing the same issue.

Hi Mel, I was wondering if there may be a reason that you’re aware of that has solved the issue such as a firmware upgrade. As it stands I’m not overly confident in it not recurring especially since I’m not seeing any other posts of a positive nature.

R3DO

The reason this issue hasn’t been addressed properly is because of Google’s LPA Cycle. Launch, Promo, Abandon. It seems the product life cycle of Google Nest Wifi has reached the abandon phase.

Don’t worry though because Google just announced the Nest Wifi PRO and it’s available for pre-order. I’m sure all these throttling issues will magically disappear on the pro version. It’s crazy to me that companies can just get away with this stuff, it only hurts the consumer 😕

Yes do not lock the thread.

I’m in the UK on Virgin media and am getting this issue, oddly only when I upgraded my speeds with my isp recently.

Just connected to my ISPs router over wifi I get 200+ on speed tests.

Once the three points are set up I get 91 through the google app speed test and roughly that through over speed tests. And this is stood next to the closest hub.

After a few back and forward emails the only advice I’ve gotten from google is disable IPv6 which it was, change the DNS which hasn’t worked.

and all the usual crap they tell you about WiFi ranges and stuff like that.

so a mad workaround I've managed is to slot the Google router behind the router provided by the ISP. This has improved the speeds received but almost certainly will generate other problems like double NAT etc but so far this has helped. I also second not locking the thread

Jhonleanmel,

I have a question related to “locking” this thread.  Where is the resolution to the issue that enables you to stop us from communicating the issue?  The implication here is that no one cares that this issue exists and the Google consensus is to sweep it under the rug and abandon customers who trusted Google to provide a product that works.

This isn’t just rude but extremely insulting.   Fix the issue that the people on this thread have provided documentation of and have attempted to self repair without the aid and support of the manufacturer, because Google has been silent for to long on this issue.

Another user coming in here. All tested methods did not resolve the issue. Currently recieving half speeds on a three mesh network

Give up on mine, Amazon have given me a refund on mine even though it was purchased 11 months ago.

6 months flawless then it just went to **bleep**. Hoping this thread would come through eventually but nah. Good luck to those still trying.
