Google wifi is providing half the speed of my modem’s wifi. App shows no other usage, no mesh issues

I have 400 mbps internet. My phone is showing 190 on a speed test app I installed. If I change to my modem’s wifi I stead of Google Wifi I get over 400.

This is not correct behavior. I looked in the Google Home app and ran a mesh test with no issue. I see the Google wifi is receiving 445 mbps download.

The whole reason I bought Google wifi was to improve speed and reliability. Why on earth is it slowing me down? Can I correct this or get a refund?

Bring it back if you can. Get onto Google and say you want a refund.

The problem is with the IPS. What I think is happening is the ISP are sending firmware updates on regular intervals, these are messing with the nest and causing it to go slow.

Google support will get you to reboot everything and then factory reset so it forces the nest to read the updated firmwares. Eventually another firmware update will come out which will knock you out. Depending on the type of updates to the firmware it could be a day a week or a month before you lose your speed.

I have friends using Sky broadband that this works for but a lot of ppl complain about it with Virgin Media.

Stick to searches Google!

I have the same issue. 700mbps to the router, 399 Mbps on devices connected to router.

What peices of **bleep**.  I can't believe I've returned to this thread almost 2 years later and nothing has changed.

I am having the same issue. I pay for 1.2GB, but am only getting 100mb on my computer/devices. Anyone know what the issue is?

I fixed mine - I turned off cloud services in the app and forgot all networks then signed in again.  Mien I believe was related to upgrading router and keeping all user/passwords same - certain devices that I assume had a static IP weren’t properly connecting with new hardware - computer, printer, PlayStation  - all fine after - haven’t tried turning back on cloud services yet

Give it a few weeks . It will flip back to the old way as soon as your ISP sends out an update to router.

How are your speeds now ?

If your computer is old with old technology, the network card is capped at 100 mb.

Same issue,

Been following the thread in hopes it will be fixed.

800 in from ISP. 800 over wifi on ISP supplied router standing next to it

400 over wifi on google mesh router standing directly next to it.

Around 80-130 on other 2 google points over wifi.

About to give up and throw them in the bin.

Afraid binning and moving on is the only option, I spent over 6 mths back and forth with them on this. Multiple agents who then disappeared and had to start over with new. Very painful process and when it comes to a refund they don’t want to know. If you haven’t purchased via Google store they don’t want to know. So I was left when 6 of them at £400 useless and they don’t want to do anything. Agents just read from a script and when exhaust this just disappear or repeat the same message that they have answered all your queries. Shocking behaviour but I guess they are too big to care.

I’m actually getting way faster speed on my sub par ISP router, like double when I am a fair bit away from it, whereas right next to a Google Wi-Fi point getting half.

That’s the irony

Hard to believe Google sell this.

Unfortunately my kids all love having the nests for the music and connectivity.

I hadn't noticed this before but had 1gig FTTP installed this week and can see I'm getting near to 1gig at the router then just below 500 out. Google needs to fix this, or I need to sell up and change system. Can't believe they are still selling this stuff!

Absolutely insane that this thread is this long and is just going completely unaddressed. Can we start sharing what people's favorite mesh alternatives are? My biggest thing is making sure the nodes can be hard wired which I thought the 'Pro' wifi system would help with...

What is the final answer on google wifi the first gen AC 1302 pucks.  Can they only be max 500mbs while we are in a time of 1Gbs provider speed.  Is there a fix to go to nest pro os same restrictions.  Google should upgrade us to their newer hardware as the promise of 1000mbs on my google wifi is not happening at all as states and reason for buying.

I am having the same issues. I am in a 2000 sqft home with 3 Mesh's!!!!! I am paying for 500mbps and i usually get 100, and then if i dont restart the router once after a few days. It drops down to single digits. Like 4mbps.

Me and my partner work from home, and are constantly running into wifi issue. Absolute garbage.

Hi folks,

That certainly isn’t the experience we want you to have and apologies for the delay. A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? Also, do you have any paused devices?

We know that you’ve already tried other options. It would be a pleasure to help you get through this. Kindly try these steps:

  1. If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  2. Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  3. Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  4. Turn off IPv6:
    1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
    2. Tap the Wi-Fi coin  and then Settings Settings.
    3. Scroll down and tap Advanced networking.
    4. Scroll down to IPv6.
    5. Toggle the switch off Toggle button off.
  5. Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  6. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  7. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data.

You may skip any step that you’ve done already.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Dan

Still the same after factory reset.. I have 500mbps but only about 100-170mbps on speedtest.net

When i restart the whole network it goes to 300-460 when just restarted but after about 5min it's back to 100-170.

Must be a firmware problem thats causing this issue...

I had the same experience. Factory reset and all.

Got a TPLink mesh network and everything works fine now.

Proves the problem is purely with Google WiFi.

I did the same thing and now my mesh works perfectly.

Called google tech and they walked me through all these tests 2-7 and then stated it was probably bridge mode issue or DMZ to call my provider.  After talking to my internet provider the modem/gateway is already on bridge mode as it just shares out internet through the device and there was no DMZ setup on it.  Done multiple resets and setups on the device and its self test shows 860 within the google home app.  Which is totally false when checking on speedtest or fast sites from same device.  Device on other peoples wifi can pull in 450-500 but, on my google wifi home can only get like 100-150?  Tech did say the 1st gen google wifi I have can only hit a maz 867 which I would be happy to even get half that wirelessly through my home.

Same for me... On a really good day I am at like 135... This has been a problem with Google's wifi for the last 5 years and people post on here once a week that they are having the same problem.  I don't understand why I get 1GB when I am wired in but only 100MB when I'm on the Google wifi.  It's unacceptable.

Have tried disabling the Nest Wi-Fi cloud services and router stats? That and a restart fixed it for me. Still need to periodically restart but it made a huge difference

Hi Dan,

This a well known problem for the last few years. I am glad you enter this with optimism, but we are waiting and waiting. Google does not acknowledge that there is a problem.

We only get instructions to 'try and figure out this or that' (like the problem is on our side) and than it remains quite for half a year until someone else comes along and tell us exactly the same thing. But nothing changes...

So again: I would like to encourage your optimism, but please: the problem is on Googles side. Help us with that.

Thanks! Brian

Gave up on this lame horse a long time ago, threw our Google wifi with 3 access points in the trash and bought an Asus which has worked great.

Hi Dan, I think you will find that in legal parlance, all the suggestions from Google tech support have been “Asked and Answered.”  As others that have gone on to other brands have reported success with the switch, we can only assume this is a Google issue. Ideally, someone from Google would review the comments in this thread and test it out in the lab. I’m sure we would have many volunteers here offering to send in our equipment for testing. In any case, clearly a subset of their products fail to operate properly. It is unfortunate that many of us, as customers, didn’t discover this issue prior to the return deadline.

In have had the opportunity to warn many potential customers about the issue I’m having and watched them buy another brand.

it would be great if Google addressed and solved this however  my expectation has bottomed out.

just want to add that after starting this sub thread and documenting my performance speeds you are the first person associated with Google to respond.

I have tried all of the steps you outlined multiple time to no avail and finally had to purchase a competitors mesh that has performed as advertised.  I sincerely hope that Google will address the issue for future users but I will not be a return customer based on this experience.  This is not indicative of my past experiences with Google but the level of disregard shown over this issue has caused me to rethink my approach.

You couldn't have said it better.

I would venture to say 90% of us have wasted our own time and google supports time going through every one of those steps and they simply do not work.  It looked like in the change logs that the next gen nest mesh devices resolved the speed test issue, but here we all are... Sitting here with $400 in paper weights / bookends.  I have since moved to eero but really hoping google provides firmware to fix this once and for all so I can return / sell these other $300 eero devices.

Come on google.  It is time you make this right

Done.

As it stands, I'm still disabling "Nest Wifi cloud services" in order to get better speeds, turning it on only when I need to modify Family Wi-Fi settings, then disabling again it when I'm done.

Model / Software Version: G6ZUC / 1.63.355999

Submitted.

I just tested ten feet from modem and router.

Modem: 362 down.

Router: 149 down.

This is routine performance. Honestly -- this is class-action lawsuit territory, is it not?

Will you please acknowledge receipt of my Form and provide a timeline with which I'll be contacted? I've tried the strategies that you recommended -- bridge mode, DNS, etc. -- and nothing has changed. I refuse to do another network factory reset... as it is *very* inconvenient to reset all of my devices and passwords.

Will everyone who fills out the fourm be contacted?
Many are just watching, trying the troubleshooting and not replyng.

I am wondering that.

I filled out the form and so far nothing… all the same.

This is a serious issue and I am tired of Google team just promising over and over that they will take this seriously, but in the end nothing happens.

This is an expensive device that over promises and under delivers.
