I have a nest wifi router connected to my modem, I have unmanaged switch connected to the Nest router, I have some computers wired connected to this switch works fine without any interruption, and my Home App shows them as wired devices

I have some Nest WIFI point and old Google connected to my Nest Router all of them are wireless  except one which wired connected  to the unmanaged switch, when I start my netwrok my Home App shows this point as wired point and great connection, after some time it shows as wireless and weak connection

I apperciate any help.

What exact switch? Some unmanaged switches can have loop detection/prevention, like STP (spanning tree protocol).

Have you tried a different gigabit cabable soft ethernet cable between the switch and the 2nd unit? Nest Wifi can struggle with thicker, stiffer cables like shielded CAT6a, where a softer CAT5e could work better.

It's also recommended not to mix wired and wireless backhaul as it can inteoduce loops. Either go all wireless backhaul, or all wired.

My switch is TP-Link TL-SG1016D, could you explain to me why all computers wired connected to the same switch, same cable quality works fine and shows as wired devices except your google access point some times shows as wired great connection  some other time wireless weak connection

Switch seems fine.

No I can't explain that. Would be great with access to logs, but we don't have that.

What cables have you tried? Category, shielding.

My house was built more than 10 years ago, it should be cat 5, the reason to have this access point connection wired it is situated fare from any other point (more than 30 meters), my servers which connected to the same switch situated about 20 meters and I use them for home smart stuff (lighting, DVR, security...), I never have connection down or weak

When this access point shows as wireless, the only way to get it wired, I use my Home App, WIFI, Network settings, Restart entire network which is not practical at all, I appreciate if you have a better solution

If possible I'd try to use wired backhaul with all Nest Wifi units, as mixed backhaul can be problematic. Mixed backhaul can cause strange, hard to diagnose problems.

Either way, I'll escalate the thread, hopefully Google will look into it.

Not all Google access point have wire socket near to them, and Nest Wifi access point does not have any Lan/Wan port

My problem is not unique, I can see on the internet so many user suffer from the same problem, but I  want to solve it from Google source

If going down the all wired units option:

  • Ethernet over coax (MoCA) and powerline are alternatives worth exploring.
  • Sell Nest Wifi points, get Nest Wifi routers only.

If I could connect all my access points as wired then I do not need Google Wifi , I like your products because of WIFI mesh technology, only I have only one point needs to be wired, as an IT for more than 50 years experience it should be an easy task from your side, as you restrict the access to the Google device only from your App, I do not  have any log or diagnostic/maintenance, I hope that you can solve this problem ASP

I don't work at or for Google, so I'm not the right audience. I'm just trying to share info on what have helped people in the past.

Some logs would be nice, I agree. But Nest Wifi does not provide that, never has, probably never will. It's kind of out of scope of what Nest Wifi tries to be. But logs would be great either way, would make it easier for us customers to troubleshoot.

Some genral advice based on my previous experience with similar niche issues: Don't expect Google to fix it within reasonable time, if at all. If you don't want to follow advice on how to get Nest Wifi to work better in it's current state (don't mix backhaul), and if you feel what Nest Wifi currently offers doesn't cut it for you, you'd be better of looking for a different Wi-Fi solution.

Sorry, This is my first post in this area, I do not know that you are not working for Google

I will take your advice to look for another WI-FI solution, I am very old person to wait

Thanks

 Hi memam,

That certainly isn’t the experience we want you to have.

The mesh network is a learning network, which can change how connections are managed over time. If the connection strength is a problem for you now, however, you can try moving the points around a bit to see how that affects mesh strengths. Just keep in mind that each point's connection strength is in relation to the main router and not to any other points on the network. As you experiment with placement, keep distance to the main router in mind first.

Also, if you could try other alternatives like ethernet over coax (MoCA) and powerline, that would be great isolating things.

Give these steps a try:

  1. If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  2. Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  3. Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  4. Turn off IPv6.
  5. Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  6. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  7. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data.
  8. You may skip any step that you’ve done already.

Thanks for helping, olavrb!

Best,

Dan

The last reply is a general response, it has nothing to do with my problem, again my problem is :

Google wifi is wired but connection shows up as wireless.

I did a small test by using a small google cable connect my access point to the unmanaged switch which is connected to the Nest Router, same problem (on start my home app show it as wired, after sometime it goes to wireless)
