Google wifi point ignoring ethernet hardwiring

TC2402

Hi all,

I had a quick search and couldn't see anyone with this precise problem.  In my house I have a Google Wifi router, with two connected Google Wifi points.  I have an office at the bottom of the garden (which was out of wifi range) so used a hardwired ethernet connection to put another Google Wifi point there.  Setting that up was a bit buggy, but once I got it working it has worked like a charm since.

This morning I added another Google Wifi point in my house in my son's bedroom (at the top of the house at the back).

I noticed that the wifi in my office is terribly slow and doing a mesh test showed that my connection in the office is weak.  Clearly what has happened is that my office Googl Wifi point has noticed that another Wifi point is in range and has decided to connect to that, rather than use the ethernet.

Is there any way I can "tell" the office Google Wifi to use the hardwired connection rather than the wifi mesh?

Thanks!

TC

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting ― let's see what's going on.

Devices usually connect to the Wi-Fi point closer to it. Also, if your Google Wifi point is already hardwired to the main point, it should stay connected to the main point through the Ethernet cable.

Give these steps a try:

  1. Turn off IPv6.
  2. Set a custom DNS at 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  3. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  4. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Mel

Thanks Mel - just to check my understanding.  These are settings in the Google Home app on my mobile phone - under "Advanced Settings" in the Google Nest Wifi section?

Thanks,

TC

Thanks for the help here, Mel.

TC2402, were you able to check the support website articles provided by Mel? Do you still need help?

YNS, how's it going? Have you tried the suggested steps above?

Thanks,

Jennifer

Yes I have , unfortunately the speeds when connected to a wifi point are still a 10th of what I get when connected to the main nest unit. I’m assuming there’s nothing else I can do about that and it’s expected behaviour

Hello YNS,

Thanks for getting back to us. Could you please try to do a speed test using your computer of phone that is directly connected to your ISP?

Thanks,

Jennifer

With the speed test direct to the isp I get close to 500mbs , same if I connect to the main google WiFi router
