Mesh network constantly drops

JohnM13

I bought a Nest router and 3 wifi points when I moved into my home 4 months ago, with the intention of eventually creating a smart home around the Google ecosystem. However, since day 1 I have had issues with mesh connectivity. I have my router in my bedroom, one point about 15 metres from the router, another point about 20 metres from the router, and another point about 20 metres from the second point. I thought that as a mesh network, the furthest point should be able to connect fairly easily, but it rarely does. In addition, the other two seem to take turns with one being offline while the other has a "great connection", then suddenly they switch around. Finally, I seem to lose wifi completely at least once a day, for varying lengths of time.

It seems to me that the points are spaced close enough to keep a good connection, but they do not. And the dropouts are driving me crazy. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can troubleshoot this issue?

It's just the opposite, points too close together interfere with each other as they both think they are the best signal. The router, and each point should cover around 1500sqft. Disconnect everything but the router  and walk away from it until your wifi signal is just about to drop. Right in that area is where you want a point. An average house should be able to have great coverage with a router and 1 point.

Thanks for replying. I take your point, and experimented with having just the router, and with one point. However, the issue with the wifi simply shutting down persists. Any ideas on how I can sort this out?

I have the same problem. At first my mesh service was excellent, but now I reconnect and then reconnect. I thought maybe my modem was the problem and going out, so I just installed a new Arris T-25, and the problem continues. I am going to try the suggestion of starting with a single point and then adding points one by one. But no way will 2 points cover my 6K sf plus 1K garage.  I am starting to wonder if the individual Google mesh points could be going bad because routers do go bad?

I only have one point and I'm having the same issue. In fact, it doesn't really have much to do with the mesh as the point away isn't far and the whole system goes down often.

Yeah I'm getting very frustrated. My ISP tells me that the modem is fine, and I believe them. I'm sitting here now watching a point try to connect to wifi, and when I say "hey Google" she says she is trying to find the wifi. My laptop is connected to the Google router via ethernet and is working perfectly. So it MUST be that the wifi just keeps disconnecting randomly, many times per day. Does anyone know if I can access some type of log that shows when and for how long this is occurring, so I can show someone?

Update to my situation: My wife and I recently bought Pixel 6 phones each. I didn't think a phone could cause wifi dropouts at home, BUT....
this morning I got an alert saying the new Pixel update due in about 3 weeks "is a fix for wifi dropping in and out".
The article is on 9 to 5 google. I'm still confused as to how a phone can stuff up home wifi, but I'll find out in a few weeks if the phone is the culprit. Cheers to all.

Hi, JohnM13.

Thanks for keeping the thread updated with what you're finding out. Funny enough, I have my Pixel 6 Pro ready to be unboxed and fired up. I hadn't actually heard about the WiFi drop issue, but is an interesting twist. Let's keep an eye on that situation and see if that is indeed your issue.

Thanks.

Hi all. First, I have to say that I've been sceptical that a couple of phones can cause a wifi network to keep dropping out, but I'm not a software engineer, so...

I've installed the update to my Pro, and am in the process of installing it on my wifes' 6. I'll wait 2 or 3 days, and report any findings. Cheers.

Hi, JohnM13.

I was surprised to find out about a phone being able to disrupt a WiFi signal as well, but the latest patch notes from the Pixel update do indeed confirm that this was an issue. The firmware update that addresses that is actually rolling out right now. Once you have the newest firmware, which could hit any day to your device, see how it impacts things and let us know. For reference, you can see the update notes for the Pixel release here: https://bit.ly/3qxdbfj.

Thanks.

Ok, well I installed the update on both phones AND decided to do another factory reset on all my devices (router and all wifi points). Just had another dropout. So it seems it isn't the phones either. Getting extremely frustrated. Can anyone tell me if I have recourse to ask for a replacement router to see if it is in fact the router itself that is the issue?

Hi, JohnM13.

Sorry the issues are continuing for you. At this point, I would contact support directly and they can let you know about replacement options and eligibility. Here's how to reach them: https://bit.ly/3o1aRK5

Hopefully you can get a few more answers working directly with support. Let me know if there's more I can do here.

Thanks.

Hi, JohnM13.

I just wanted to follow up to see if you had a chance to reach out to support and to see if you had any luck with them. If so, let me know how it went or let me know if you still need some help here.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff (and anyone else following). Yes, I got onto support, and the tech helped me change a setiing (I'm having a mental blank: can't remember the name) to 1.1.1.1 (LAN setting?)

About 3 minutes after he hung up, it dropped again. BUT since then there have been no issues whatsoever. So happy days so far.

I did note that I saw an article saying that this issue is quite common lately, and Google haven't yet found a permanent fix. But this Tech has helped me. I'm very happy. Thanks Jeff.

Excellent news, JohnM13. Thanks for the update.

Since we have our resolution on this, I'll go ahead and close up the thread. If you need anything else, however, please feel free to start up a new thread.

Thanks.
