Neighbor got access to my wifi

Mrgee

All of a sudden, my smart device app has shown lots of neighbor devices!

I have used an other app to help identify them. I myself have about forty smart gadgets registered.

1st - I have paused them in Google home. Yet they still communicate via my wifi! I know this because I can actually turn their lights off an on! So pause does not work.

2nd - i have never received notification about new device added

3rd - neighbor never had access to my password that uses letters numbers and special characters. Something tells me that Google wifi is either broadcasting my password or is badly protected!

Now, I can change my password but besides it will be pain now to change it for all devices (40+ of them) I don't know if it will help!

Please advise! It is highly important subject!

average neighbor is not that smart. First change your passsword to the wifi, obviously.  2nd, search Amazon for a fing box.  It blocks all devices till you grant them access.  It also allows you to identity them so you can get a clear picture  of what is hanging on to your SSID.

Changing the password is in the plans, although first I need to understand how this could have happened. I will hate changing all my smart devices (40+) passwords again and again if it is broadcasted!

They could have chosen a better name or Amazon does a bad job searching... I got ring boxes and died veggie food back! I finally found these fingboxes. I suppose there so not much competition yet because prices are quite high!

yeah I know, dumb name. Should be about 100

not sure how your neighbor got access to your Wi-Fi as it does not broadcast the password.  I know it sounds stupid but is there any chance that maybe there is an outage and a family member let them use your Wi-Fi?

Not a stupid question. However that is not the case as I am the only person who knows it.

I started having suspicious that the problem may be in the smart devices itself. Eg, that the app actually, because requires opened wifi, gps, and bt, identified neighbors devices as well, and it pulled them into my fold...

I have sent the issue to them.

Anyway, one thing is sure - despite pausing these devices they still, according to Google home - use my wifi, so something is not right there as well...

I have found that these devices use mac randomisation, but in Google home they still use the same mac (and IP)

Hey, everyone.
It looks like we've slowed down here again. We'll be closing up the thread unless anyone else has any input or needs anything else. If so, just let me know and we can keep this open a bit longer.
Thanks.

I have reset all devices that were not mine. I suspect I have messed up with the neighbor settings a lot because they had quite extensive set of switches and lights. They were definitely under my network but I have not found any evidence the neighbor broke in.
That would mean that it was the Gosund app that must have 'seen' them and took them over.
I also noticed that similar app is executed by Feit Electric. This was the very first time when I saw 'kitchen sink lights' appearing on my list, and I definitely don't have these!

Very odd stuff, Mrgee!

So after all the resetting, are you seeing any unknown devices at all? Were those you mentioned from before the reset or after?

Thanks.

Hi, Mrgee.
I just wanted to check in real fast to see if you saw my reply and to see if you would be able to clarify that for me.
Thanks.

Dear Jeff:

Now, when I select scan it does not display to me any new devices that would be not mine and I don't see alien devices as well. Also gosund told that they treated it as a bug. I didn't receive any report having it confirmed or fixed but just in case I have updated their app.

So, at this moment, it looks like I don't have the issue any more.

That's great news, Mrgee. I'll check back in with you in 2-3 days to see if things are still working. If we're good at that point, we can go ahead and mark this as resolved. Let me know if you have any other quetsions.

Thanks!

Missed one piece.  Open the home app, go to wifi, nest router, scroll to notifications.  There is will you see alerts for new devices that have joined

I have all the alerts turned on from the beginning... That's what surprised me to...
