Nest Router Requires Restarting

Lmin
Community Member

My Nest WiFi requires restarting every couple of days to bring speed back to normal.

I’ve read plenty about this on other threads, and nothing, really nothing helps. How is this still a problem? Does anyone else experience the same issue?

Connectivity works, but from an average of 400 Mbps, goes down to around 10… after performing a device restart, speed goes back up to normal again. There’s no preferred activity, no prioritized device, nothing. And still out of nowhere and for no apparent reason, speed drops this hard.

Is there an actual fix for this even? Or do I have to throw this device to the trash?

Hi Lmin,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand you're experiencing an issue where your Google Nest Wifi requires restarting every couple of days to restore normal internet speeds. I understand how frustrating it can be. Let's work together to find a solution.

Before restarting your Nest Wifi, I recommend the following:

  1. Run a Speed Test:

    • Direct Connection: Connect a device (computer, laptop, etc.) directly to your modem using an Ethernet cable. Run a speed test and record the results.
    • (Optional) Older Router: If you have an older router, connect it to your modem and run another speed test.
  2. Compare Results:

    • Compare the speed test results from the direct connection and (if applicable) the older router.
    • If these speeds are significantly faster than the speeds you're experiencing with Nest Wifi.
  3. Try a Different DNS Server:

    • Open the Google Home app.
    • Tap on your Wi-Fi network under "Favorites."
    • Go to "Network settings" and then "Advanced Networking."
    • Select "DNS."
    • Choose "Custom."
    • Enter "8.8.8.8" as the first DNS server and "8.8.4.4" as the second.
    • Tap "Save."

DNS (Domain Name System) translates website addresses into IP addresses that computers can understand. Using public DNS servers like Google Public DNS can sometimes improve internet speed and reliability.

Please let me know if these steps help resolve the issue. If not, we can explore further troubleshooting options.

I hope this information helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Regards,

Kevin

Hi @kcruzgonzalez, thanks for answering my question. I will give it a try. However, I don’t imagine this fixing my WiFi issue. In short, the Nest router seems to have great speed from the cable in. It’s consistent and what I see from the automatic speed test and performance chart, stable and strong. My provider is 1000/1000 and the router shows speeds of ~850/850 or more. So the speed the router gets is good and stable. However the issue is what the router sends out over WiFi to my devices. The issue is strictly with WiFi out.
I work in IT and even though I am not a networking expert, I assume your suggestions will not modify what speed or connectivity the router sends out over WiFi, rather modify how the router receives internet connection. Am I wrong?

My humble opinion is that this is a software issue within the Nest router that for some reason fails at providing stability in connected devices via WiFi. I know the router switches between 2.4 and 5 ghz automatically, so it seems to me that something else is going on here. Also based on every other thread about this issue in these forums.

If you really think that changing my DNSs will change how the router serves WiFi connectivity even though the internet in is great (according to the tests), I will give it a go… let me know if what I try to explain here makes sense please. Thanks again!

Hi Lmin,

Thank you for your response. I understand how frustrating it can be to deal with inconsistent Wi-Fi speeds. Let's work together to find a solution.

When the issue occurs again, please try the following:

  • Factory Reset your Nest Wifi: This will erase all settings and data from your Nest Wifi system. Back up any important information before proceeding.
  • Reconfigure your network: After the factory reset, set up your Wi-Fi network again.
  • Check Bridge Mode: Confirm that your ISP modem is operating in "bridge mode." This can help prevent networking conflicts.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, please let me know, and we can explore further troubleshooting options or escalate the case for further assistance.

I'm here to help you find a solution!"

Regards,

Kevin
