Nest WiFi and virgin media hub-loss of performance on the mesh

Kevmcc44

I have the Google WiFi connected to a virgin media hub 4 with 3 mesh points. It's in modem mode. It should be a 1 GB service. On the Google router am getting over 900mb so good but the mesh points (one just 4 metres away) I am getting 40mb at best - all with great connection. What am I doing wrong to lose so much speed? Have rebooted and restarted the network but no improvement.

To clarify when I run a speed check via the home app it says I get 900mb but when I run a speed test through on my phone connected to the router router it says 200mb and the drops to 40mb on each mesh. No other connection I to the router.

Hello Kevmcc44,

Thanks for posting — let's get this sorted out.

A few questions: when did this issue start? Were there recent changes in your network? Do you have a switch on your network?

Plug an undamaged Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable securely into your modem and Google Nest Wifi router. Ensure that your Wifi devices are no more than two rooms apart and that there's minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) between them. You may also give the following steps below a try:

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set it to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  • Remove any special characters from your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6.
  • Change your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 on your primary and 8.8.4.4 on your secondary servers.
  • Unplug the power from your modem and Google Nest Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  • If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will remove all network data.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Lovely

Hi Kevmcc44,

Please factory reset and interchange your Google Wifi points, then use another device as the main point. You can also turn off Preferred activities and see if that improves your network performance.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,
Lovely
