Nest Wifi - intermmitent connectivity when connected to work VPN

Eugabgomes

Hi all,

I'm not a network expert so forgive me for that in advance.

I have Google Wi-fi connected to my router and an additional Google Nest wi-fi point. I have both wi-fi from my router and the wi-fi from Google Nest.

Connection works great when I'm not connected to my work VPN. However, when I connect to my work VPN, connection gets extremely intermittent, even when I'm close to Google Nest Wi fi. If I unplug Google wi fi from my router and connect my laptop directly to the router, I don't have this problem.

My work VPN is configured through Palo Alto firewall and I use GlobalProtect app on my computer to connect to the VPN.

My router is UPC giga connect box

Any ideas on how to investigate this issue would be deeply appreciated. Please bear in mind I'm no expert on this matter.

Thanks in advance

Gabriel

Nest Wifi itself is a router with firewall, NAT, DHCP. So you are now running what's called "double NAT", by not bridging the ISP equipment. That might be something to look into here.

Ask your ISP about this, and maybe ask/ search up how well Palo Alto VPN likes double NAT.

This is a resurfing topic, here you can get more info from previous threads:

And Google support articles on double NAT and bridge mode:

I don't work for Google.

Thanks Olavrb, disabling the router functionality in my modem/router combo has solved the issue 🙂

Hey everyone,

It looks like we've slowed down here. We'll be closing up the thread in the next day unless anyone else has any input or needs anything else. If so, just let me know and we can keep this open a bit longer.

Thanks,
Jeff

My work VPN grinds to a halt occasionally and hike all other google nest mesh connections remain at normal speeds.
