Nest wifi points... junk?

Jessylynne

So I have read A TON of posts about the same issue I am having with these wifi points dropping offline for random/ no reason at all. With countless hours spent troubleshooting and doing all of these extra ridiculous things to keep these little points online. I have not seen anyone post that they were successful in doing this aside from just going in another direction completely. And wasting alot of money and time. I myself am at that wasteful point and am near the point of accepting these points are failures and I need to find something else. Has anyone figured out how to keep them online?

Thank you!

I've come to same conclusion.  They did something that's messed everyone up and are letting us flop and twitch through the pointless factory resets.

Super frustrating.  They made their money off of us, and they're on to the next one.  disappointing, but goodbye Google.

If you want to stick with Nest Wi-Fi, then replace the Nest point with a Nest router.  I've seen it several times now, that the problems vanish when the point is replaced with a router.  The router does have a better antenna configuration and more memory, but that doesn't really explain why the performance should be so much better, (or the point so much worse)

Thanks @BLewis .  I do have the Nest Router hard-wired into my Verizon Gateway Router.  It looked like whack-a-mole in my office as I had my three Points around me constantly resetting, scanning, naming, etc all night trying to get network back up.  Eventually, I just unplugged Nest Router and using Gateway Wi-Fi for whole house until I can get a replacement mesh system

Same problem here, around 2 or 3 weeks my nest points are becoming unresponsive, devices are not connecting, sometimes low (useless) speed, sometimes the pods are going offline for no reason, stop the appleish tactic to force us to get the new nest wifi 6. We need a fix!

Same issue as other posters. Keeps disconnecting--on my iphone, my pc, my ipad... Really frustrating! And, time-consuming. About to move on.

Still the same my end, I have limited devices connected now. Same thing happened with the original nest wifi, nest protects and no doubt other google products. As frustrating and annoying as this is I'm confident it will be stabilised in the long term. Google folks on here should really provide an update on when the next firmware update is likely to drop, every Google product will have release schedule.

Same issue here.  Started about 2-3 weeks ago and my points have been in same place since the original setup.  When I reset everything they show up with Great Connection, then with in minutes to a couple hours everything goes offline.   Since I work from home and rely on my wifi this is getting to be very annoying and costly.

Google needs to get this fixed.

Same!!  I have 6 all together and while they have been a struggle for a while, they are bordering on useless now.

Hi everyone,

I’m sorry to hear that you’re experiencing this issue. Let's see what's going on.

A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Please let me know if you’ve exhausted all the steps below:

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  • Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6.
  • Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  • Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  • If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data.
  • You can skip some of the steps if you’ve done them already.

We’ll wait for your update.

Best,
Abi

@AbigailF From my perspective and I work in technology and engineering. I love Google products, and I have most of the home devices Google sells. The general stability of this one seems poor at the moment. We are getting close now to 4 months since the last firmware update.  (1.63.327820). I won't ask for my money back or anything like that, but usage at home is minimal for me, limited to devices which don't matter.  I have the luxury of that setup and the knowledge to operate my home setup; most people who buy Google products do not.

Here is the last firmware update - https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/13007303?hl=en

The only thing at the moment which will make it me happy is knowing when we can roughly expect the next firmware update. It's rarely a hardware issue with Google devices, which always comes back to this. Stability and performance over time get better. For example, we had lots of problems with Nest Thermostat when we were early adopters, but you could argue here, that wifi is less complicated and most of the issues people are complaining about should be resolved or minimised by now.

Hope this helps & hang in there all.

Hello folks,

@Agentgill, we appreciate your feedback. Currently, we don’t have any news regarding a new firmware update. Your Nest Wifi devices will automatically receive over-the-air updates about any software and hardware-related fix or firmware updates as long as it's constantly powered on and connected to the Wi-Fi network.

To everyone, if you still encounter issues after trying the troubleshooting steps I mentioned, please fill out this form and let us know once you're done.

Regards,
Abi
