Nest Wifi network problems notification

I have the Nest Wifi extension pod in my bedroom. Most of the time, this works fine and it makes me very happy.

Last night, I was woken at about 01:30 by a slow yellow throbbing light from the pod. This, apparently, means that the internet connection has dropped. And, indeed, I got up this morning to find that Virgin Media's network was in meltdown all across the UK.

It's obviously pretty useful to know when my internet connection has gone down. It's rather less useful (in my opinion) to be told that while I'm trying to sleep.

Thinking more about it, I can't really understand why the extension pod has this feature, but the main router doesn't.

But I would like to suggest some improvements to the interface (hopefully one of more of them already exists and I just can't find the correct setting).

1. The ability to turn off the network outage light

2. The ability to turn the network outage light on and off using a timer

3. The ability to control the network outage light from a Google Home routine (so "Goodnight" can turn it off and "Good morning" can turn it on again)

The only other option would be to switch the extension pod off every night. And that solution seems sub-optimal.

I surely can't be the only person who has been woken up unnecessarily by this light.

You can't turn off the light for a specific condition, but you can turn it off generally or lower its brightness:

Yes, but that setting specifically says:

"Status light flashes yellow when there's an issue with your connection, even when turned off"

So I'm afraid that's not at all helpful.

Shame! You could connect it to a smart plug that is scheduled to turn off at night?

Hmm... that's not a terrible idea 🙂 And I do have a spare smart plug.

But it would be great if the team behind Nest Wifi could realise that this feature is potentially problematic and do something about it.

True! I’d encourage you to also send this feedback directly to Google. You will not receive a response, unless Google need more details from you, however the team are still reading the feedback.

Hi davorg,

Thanks for sharing your feedback here and sending it in through the app. I can send your post through to our team as well in the form of a feature request. That will go to our internal teams as well. Aside from passing that along to our teams, is there anything else I can help with?

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

That would be great, thanks. I don't think I have anything else to add.

Sounds good, davorg.

Thanks for checking back in. As we have our answers here, I'll be closing up the thread in the next day. If you think of any additional questions, feel free to ask them before the lock.

Thanks,

Jeff
