New software upgrade did not fix speed issue

drrmjones

I got the new software update that was supposedly going to fix all the issues that people are having with slow connections to the internet, but it did nothing to change my situation.

Doing an internet speed test from the Google Home app CONSTANTLY reports a connection speed of 300 Mbps, even though I have gigabit internet from Spectrum cable. Sometimes it is lower, but it is never higher.

Before I upgraded to the pro, I had Nest WiFi, and the speed reports were consistently 700-800 Mbps.

So what the heck is going on? Somebody really needs to fix this.

Same here, just got the update and the Google Home Test won't go over 600 Mbps (stays within 400-560) and I pay for gigabit through Cox. I read that the Good Home wifi test uses the Google Servers and not local so that maybe part of the reason but like you mentioned the previous Nest WiFi speed test were more accurate and I assume it was pinging from the same Google Servers (didn't own the old one), not sure really sure if it's the router and more so the testing they are using, either way I have yet to see someone say there are now seeing very close to gig speeds.

Before the Update I had great speeds at both nodes. Now the mesh point drops speed always to around 100 Mbits. Speed Test on Device says 300/70. I am embarrased, the fix made it worse for me.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to check in real fast and see how you were measuring speeds. Are you using the Home app to compare all speeds? Have you tried using another speed test to see how it compares? Let me know how you're checking speeds and I'll be happy to jump in and help here.

Thanks,
Jeff

In my case, I get the slow readings using the Google Home App. When my ISP technician ran their own speed test, it was 3 times faster. When I use speedtest.net from my phone or laptop over the WiFi, I actually get faster results than Google Home reports. But information appears to have come out just today that this is now a known issue that there are going to correct with a future update. At least I'm pretty confident this is the issue I have been experiencing. I can't assert that it's the issue others in this thread are experiencing.

Hey drrmjones,

We have been seeing others describe the same discrepancy between speed test results on the Google Home app and with other tests. Right now teams are looking into the possibility that Home is under reporting speeds. Thanks for chiming in with your experience there. It definitely helps.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hey, all.

I wanted to follow up again and see if you saw my earlier post about comparing speed tests from the Home app and another source, such as https://goo.gle/2QXCbe1. If you have had a chance to compare, let me know what you see.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi,

Hi Jeff,

I'm seeing lower speeds testing outside of Google home interestingly, still nothing close to 1Gbs though. I'm not experiencing network issues thought and have about 40 current devices in the home. Results below:

Google Home speed test: 551Mbps/36.2Mbps

SpeedTest/Okla: 304Mbps/34.7Mbps

My prior router (eero saw 950Mbps typically)

Do you know if there will be an update to the Google Home Wifi test?

Hope this helps

Hey there,

Thanks for the help, @Jeff,

@PaulD733, give these steps a try:

If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
Turn off IPv6.
Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Mel
