Recent Google Nest Wifi Pro Signal strength and quality has dropped

Randa11run

Good morning. In the last week or so the strength, quality, consistency of my Google Nest Wifi Pro has dropped significantly.  My iPhone is showing a strong signal but can't connect to the wifi network. My desktop (PC) that is hard wired to a nest wifi hub is having on and off problems.  I haven't change anything, my IP signal is the same strength and has been consistent.  Any idea what is going on? Did Google Nest send some bad firmware out?

Just for clarity I've reset "turned off and on " my modem and all the routers, hubs, etc.

Hi, @Randa11run,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand you're encountering some persistent issues with your WiFi network and your Google Nest Wifi Pro router's and points' performance. Let's work together to get your Wi-Fi back to its strong and reliable best.

Before I begin, I need to ask a few questions for further assistance:

  • How many Google Nest Wifi Pro routers and points do you have in your system?

  • Have you tried using the Google Home app to run a network speed test or any other diagnostic tools it offers?

  • Have you noticed if the status lights on your Nest Wifi Pro routers and points are showing any unusual colors or patterns?

  • For your wired PC, when you say 'on and off problems,' can you describe what those problems look like? (e.g., intermittent internet drops, slow speeds, inability to access certain websites).

  • When your iPhone 'can't connect,' does it not see the network at all, does it try to connect and fail, or does it connect but have no internet access?

  • When you say the 'strength' has dropped, are you referring to the Wi-Fi signal strength displayed on your devices or the actual speed and responsiveness of the internet connection?

  • Do you have the Wi-Fi functionality enabled on your internet service provider's router while also using your Google Nest Wifi Pro for Wi-Fi?

Please keep me posted. I'll look forward to your response.

Best regards,

Kevin

Kevin - Thank you for getting back to me. See below

  • How many Google Nest Wifi Pro routers and points do you have in your system?
    1 router/point and 2 additional points (3 total points)

  • Have you tried using the Google Home app to run a network speed test or any other diagnostic tools it offers?
    Yes. Didn't seem to help

  • Have you noticed if the status lights on your Nest Wifi Pro routers and points are showing any unusual colors or patterns?
    I have not

  • For your wired PC, when you say 'on and off problems,' can you describe what those problems look like? (e.g., intermittent internet drops, slow speeds, inability to access certain websites).
Higher ping, sites not loading, general lag

  • When your iPhone 'can't connect,' does it not see the network at all, does it try to connect and fail, or does it connect but have no internet access?
It can see it but not connect. Just gets the circle but wont connect. Shows full strength signal too

  • When you say the 'strength' has dropped, are you referring to the Wi-Fi signal strength displayed on your devices or the actual speed and responsiveness of the internet connection?
    Actual speed / responsiveness

  • Do you have the Wi-Fi functionality enabled on your internet service provider's router while also using your Google Nest Wifi Pro for Wi-Fi?
No, I'm operating in bridge mode

Hi @Randa11run,

Thanks for getting back to me with that information. Let's definitely work through this to find a solution for your Wi-Fi issues.

To start, I'd like you to try a couple of things that can help us pinpoint where the problem might be:

Step 1: Direct Connection Test (if feasible for your PC)

If your desktop PC is located close to your internet service provider's (ISP) modem, could you please disconnect the Google Nest Wifi Pro router and connect your computer directly to the modem using an Ethernet cable? Then, try browsing the internet for a while to see if you experience the same slow loading or connectivity problems.

If it's not easy to connect your PC directly to the modem, no worries, we can skip this step for now and move on.

Step 2: Change the DNS Settings

Next, let's try changing the DNS (Domain Name System) settings on your Google Nest Wifi Pro and your iPhone. This can sometimes improve browsing speed and reliability.

On your Google Nest Wifi Pro:

  1. Open the Google Home app.

  2. Tap Wi-Fi > Settings > Advanced Networking.

  3. Tap DNS.

  4. Select Custom, and then enter 8.8.8.8 in the first field and 8.8.4.4 in the second field. These are Google's public DNS servers.

  5. Tap Save.

On your iPhone:

  1. Open the Settings app .

  2. Tap Wi-Fi. If it's off, turn it on.

  3. Tap the blue "i" icon next to your Wi-Fi network name.

  4. Tap Configure DNS.

  5. Select Manual.

  6. Tap Add Server and enter 8.8.8.8. Tap Add Server again and enter 8.8.4.4.

  7. Tap Save (usually in the top right corner).

Once you've completed these steps, please let me know if you notice any improvement in your internet connectivity on both your iPhone and your PC. I'll be here and ready to continue assisting you further based on the results.

Best regards,

Kevin
