Support ending for OnHub

I've been notified over the past year that support was ending for my google OnHub. I figured this meant that there would no longer be updates etc. but today I received an email stating, among other things, that as of January 11

  • You won't be able to update things like Wi-Fi network settings, add additional Wifi devices, or run speed tests.

So does this mean that any new device I buy or bring home will not connect to my network?  This seems excessive and unnecessary. Am I understanding this correctly?

The reason for retiring the OnHub is that the hardware and software is obsolute/no longer able to support the necessary standards, in short. This was originally announced some time ago but the exact dates were not put out until recently.

Here's the most current support article about the EOS: Support for OnHub routers ending

This is not an uncommon occurrence and no different that other hardware. I replaced our OnHub when the original Google Wifi came out (now on the Nest Wifi Pro) due to the lessening security of the device. Upgrading the hardware will give you better performance, longer support, and much better security.

i think the issue/question is not about the EOL of a device, which is completely expected at some point, but more: if it's not supported anymore by the google home app, is there any way to managed the OnHub device directly or is it now a complete e-waste?

If it turns into a e-waste like that, that may be a concern. It would be like bricking a Pixel Phone once the end of support is reached...

Hey DanielOnHubEOL,

The OnHub devices will still work and provide a WiFi signal. If you have the device set up before the cutoff date, it will continue to work as a WiFi network device. It's only after the cutoff that you won't be able to make any changes, set up, or manage the device. If you have an OnHub and want to keep using it, you can do so as long as it's already set up.

Thanks,

Jeff
