Temporary disable 5ghz for new device set up

Larrynx

Hey Google guys.

Just an idea. A lot of devices can only connect to 2.4 GHz band. Would it be possible to add an option to temporarily disable the 5ghz band for like 15 minutes. It would save people a lot of time and make setting up new devices so much easier in the future

Hey, Larrynx.

I'm sorry for the late reply here, but I wanted to make sure we addressed your comment. While there's no way to disable the 5GHz band on the WiFi points or router, most devices will still connect to the 2.4GHz band as both are actually running simultaneously. Every once in a while a device does struggle to connect, and in that instance I can see how your suggestion would be useful. I can pass your suggestion on to our internal teams for consideration.

If you have any other questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to help you out.

Thanks!

I think you are missing the point both devices need to be on the 2.4 GHz in order to connect New devices using the phone

if one is on 5 GHz and the other is on 2.4 it just doesn’t work

Hey, MrsSilva.

I see what you're saying now. So your actual issue is that one device is running at 5GHz and the other at 2.4GHz. Ok, this sounds like a strange workaround, but I have seen this work. You can sort of trick your 5GHz device to being connected to the 2.4GHz by moving to the edges of your mesh network. Since 2.4GHz has a longer range than 5GHz, if you get to the edges, it will be on the 2.4GHz band. Out on the edges, you can perform the setup and then move the devices back to where they will be used normally and they should respond normally and connect as needed.

Thanks.
