Unable to reach computer through Google wifi

dansuson

I am running into a problem trying to connect with my computer. The computer, which runs Linux, is connected wirelessly to a Google wifi, which in turn is connected to a starlink router. I've turned off the wifi router on the starlink device by placing it into passthrough mode. On the Google wifi router, I've set up a permanent LAN IP number and opened up port 22. However, when I try to connect to my machine via ssh, I'm still getting a "connection timed out" error. I'm having difficulties trouble shooting this, so any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi @dansuson,

I appreciate you taking the time to post in the community! I'm sorry to hear that you are having issues connecting your computer to your Google Wifi. I'll be more than glad to assist you with your matter.

I have some questions before we get started:

  1. Do you know if your device uses an IPv6 or IPv4?
  2. Do you know the IP address of your device and the range?

I’ll be waiting for your reply.

Regards,

Derick.

Dear @Derickf,

I'm using IPv4. I am assigning a static IP to my computer, so I know what it's IP number is. I can't find anything in either the Google Home or the Starlink apps telling me what the external IP number is, but I have been able to get it via the whatsmyip.com website and have confirmed that through my noip.com account. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by the range. Are you asking about the range of IP available numbers or the physical range of the wireless transmitter?

As far as I know, the wireless router on my Starlink is not active and working in passthrough mode. When I check this on the app, it tells me that the Starlink router is unreachable. All of my networked devices are working properly and connected to the network SSID that I set up on the Google WiFi router. Even so, I'm not sure that the IP number is going to the Google device instead of the (not operating) Starlink device. That might explain why the settings that I put into the Google router regarding port forwarding don't seem to be working correctly. I would try to do a factory reset on the Starlink router, but the whole reason for going to passthrough mode is to be able to assign static IP numbers and port forwarding, two things that the Starlink router doesn't support. Any thoughts on this?

Sincerely,

Dan

Hi. Sorry I have a question for you. When I go into my google account it says Linux computer has logged in. I've E never heard of Linux before ever.   I heard someone could haven't accts linked with their operating system and google home. And that could explain my tv volume going up and down. If can help me I'd appreciate it. This is effecting my mental health in a huge way.  I thanks

Hey there!

Thank you for your reply. Let's try something. Have you checked if the port forwarding is enabled in the Google Home app? If not, you can take a look at the following article: Port forwarding or port opening.

I’ll be waiting for your reply.

Regards,

Derick.

Dear Derick,

I previously set up port forwarding for the various ports that I need open. I didn't see anywhere that I can enable or disable port forwarding in general. I assumed that it is enabled as soon as I specified ports to be forwarded to my computer. Any other ideas to try?

Sincerely,

Dan

Sorry for not responding sooner. We're getting ready to go on a trip through the first week of January. I won't be available to test any suggestions until I return, so I was going to wait until then to submit the form.
