Unable to setup google wifi as mesh

Issue

  • Unable to setup Google Wifi(s) as additional mesh points

Details

  • I have 3 Google Wifi points - all 3 devices were bought together as a set of 3
  • Was able to run all of them as a mesh network for about 2 years
  • However, after a power surge in our house, the devices stopped working where we can no longer connect to the internet reliably.
  • The device(s) have no issue being setup as a primary point
  • But when attempting to add the remaining 2 devices as child points to the mesh network,
    • After identifying and scanning the QR code on the devices,
    • the Google Home app reports an error “failed to connect” after about 15-30 secs

Steps Taken

  • Performed factory reset through the Google Home app
  • Performed factory reset for each individual device through the hardware button
  • Performed recovery flashing using the onhub recovery utility
  • I deleted the network from the Google Home in the Home app (specifically when I was verifying if the device can work as primary points)
  • Attempted to setup when device starts to flash blue
  • Verified the modem has no issues - can connect to internet via direct ethernet to laptop, or through Google WiFi when setup as a primary point

Other Observations

  • Each device can be setup successfully as a primary point without any problems - only problem is when attempting to add them as child point
  • The devices intended to be added as child points has been factory reset (multiple times) after verifying that they work as primary points - but only to not work with the Google Home app reports an error “failed to connect” after 15-30s

I am out of my wits as there are no details around the specific error encountered by the devices

Try to set up secondaries while keeping them close to the primary, then move them later.

Or set them up while being connected by ethernet from primary LAN port to secondary WAN port, then disconnect and move them later.

Or try the alternative setup method wirhout using the QR:

Or try the Google Home app from a different phone or tablet, Android, iOS or iPadOS.

I don't work for Google.
