Using iOS and Google Wifi Access Points, cannot open Digital Wellbeing within the Google Home App. Get the message Couldn't open settings, TRY AGAIN. Rebooted phone, rebooted entire network, deleted Google Home App, still doesn't work, same error. App version 2.42.120 and iOS version 14.7.1. Found some Reddit posts but they are a few months old and either resolved itself or no further comments. Any help is appreciated.. Get the message Couldn't open settings, TRY AGAIN. I just wanted everyone to know I was able to finally fix this problem after posting this 18 months ago. I replaced my entire Google Wi-Fi system with a competitor. While I have to pay a few bucks a year for the parental controls, it's just as flexible and management from iOS devices works great. Also, was able to improve my whole house coverage with one less access point.

Hey, everyone.

I can see the frustration over this and it's all understandable. Again, people are looking into this, but I still don't have an estimate for a fix rollout.

Thanks.

Jeff.  You mentioned in a thread a while ago, there is a way to do it from a PC Laptop/desktop.  Can you send that "how to" around to try?

So about that, AllenC, it's a bit of a harder workaround. I don't have access to a how to on that, but essentially people are using an Android emulator on their PC or Mac to run Android on their computer. From there, they install the Home app and try managing things from there. I have no personal experience with it, however. For those doing that, they were mostly doing it as a short term solution.

Hey, everyone.

It's been a while since I've popped in, and I can see more reports being added into the mix. I'm still waiting to hear more, and I'm sorry for frustration this is causing everyone. I wish I knew more, but I'm keeping an eye on this and hoping to be able to provide more info soon.

Thanks.

Hi a Jeff.  I am yet another user experiencing this same issue.  Any updates?

Can I borrow an android phone, load the Home app, sign up with my password and edit digital wellbeing filters…then delete the app off the phone and have the filters in place?

Or, can I control it at all from my desktop?

I have no control over my system.

Jeff:  I you can post/send a detailed, step by step "how to" do it from a PC, that would help. I am a tech-neophyte, dont understand much of the lingo but can follow step by step (as you did on the turn off/on system earlier) instructions.  I just want to control my wifi - a main reason I purchased the nest/mesh/wife, whatever its called, system.

I'd really like to see a fix to this, too. I've uploaded the error through feedback that you suggested, but I'm still feeling pretty frustrated. The idea of Google Home and controlling everything from one app is great, but only if it all really works!

Same issue here. When will this get fixed?

I am having the same issue, I would appreciate a fix or guidance on how to open the settings, otherwise I will have to move to an alternative device, and not use google home anymore.

Hi Jeff.  Appreciate this is still on your radar but, sadly, no.  No change.  Still getting "Couldn't open settings", try again, error message.  Still sailing with no rudder as Google removed that important steering tool.  Lame by you guys.

I have also tried configuring this from my Chromebook but strangely the Digital Wellbeing option is missing when I go to where it should be in the app.

Seems weird such a key feature wouldn't work.

Hi ya guy, this has also been happening to me. Honestly I didn’t notice this for a few week but when I went to change my routines I couldn’t find the button, so I started poking around in settings and realised I couldn’t access digital well-being. Again it says “Couldn’t I open settings. Try Again”. I have an iPhone XS Max Running iOS 15.1 on the latest version of the Google Home app.

Should change the error message to “this feature is currently unavailable for iphone”

Integrity and honesty count for a lot. This is something I'd expect from Comcast not google

Hi shiffamatic,

I understand that this has been ongoing for quite some time, and I apologize for the inconvenience it has caused so far. At the moment, our team is still looking into this issue and I have no additional updates to share right now. I’ll continue checking in with the team and updating this thread as soon as I can.

Best,

Mel

Hi everyone,

The firmware update is rolling out now. The firmware update versions are listed below:

  • Google Wifi: 14150.376.32
  • Nest Wifi router: 14150.376.32
  • Google Wifi (2nd gen): 14150.376.32
  • Nest Wifi point: 1.56.315675

Please let me know if you are still having any concerns or questions from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Thanks,
Mel

As the originator of this thread, this is where things stand today. Using Apple iOS Device 16.0.2, Google Home App 2.58.104, and Google WiFi (2nd Gen I think) 14150.376.32, Digital Wellbeing still will not launch with message "Coudn't open settings" TRY AGAIN. Everything in play has been updated to the latest greatest version/firmware.

Still doesn't work, sorry. Apple iOS 16.0.2, Google Home App 2.58.0104, and Google WiFi (2nd Gen) 14150.376.32. Same error when trying to launch Digital Wellbeing.

Hey folks,

I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Please let me know if you are still having any concerns or questions from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Best,
Mel

It still doesn’t work

Same. Maybe you should just remove Digital Well-being from iOS installs. It’s not going to improve by simply asking the contributors here over and over if it’s working now. Your development team needs fix the issue.

Mel, did you not see my reply from Sunday October 2nd? It doesn't work even with the firmware updates to the WiFi devices.

Hey folks,

Thanks for the updates and for your patience. Our team is investigating why Digital Wellbeing is unable to open within the Google Home app. We'll update this thread once we get an update.

Mel

Having the same issue, I can’t start the Digital Wellbeing, the error message is “couldn’t open settings”. I’m using latest version of iOS and google home app. The fix I found was to change my phone region to US, but this got me some other functionality issues with my Apple Pay and Wallet app. I’m using this functionality for some automations in my home. Thx.

Are Google even bothered? This has been going on forever and still no fix, it is MASSIVELY frustrating. They are happy to take your money though.

This is insane. I literally bought google nest wifi because I thought I would have easier/better controls of what my kids have access to. Its just the opposite. What is the status here?

Any updates on this issue? I have the same problem.

When is this getting a fix? This is a joke. How long does it take to fix a bug with the amount of people responding with the same issue.

It doesn’t even work on android phones!! I’m getting rid and buying a TP link alternative

I'd think with everyone on LinkedIn bragging about working at google this would not happen from such a world class org.

Wow. Still not fixed and cannot open digital well-being. **bleep** product.

So, I too can't believe that Google isn't working to resolve this issue that millions of people must have. Shouldn't be surprised though.

For those looking for a way to have the content filter on your devices, but unable to access the "Digital wellbeing" option, I found a way. Click on the WIFI button when you first open the app, Mine is green at the top left.

Scroll down below devices to "Family Wi-fi" (at least that's what it is on my phone, can't remember if I chose that name or not. It's between "Devices" and above "Guest Network".

Once in "Family Wi-fi" create a group by clicking the + sign in the bottom right corner of the screen. Select Group, type your group name, choose devices you want in the group, then on the next screen select "Restrict Access" which at least turns on SafeSearch and blocks millions of adult websites. Hit next, if you don't want to mess with setting up a schedule to block the internet for devices, hit "not now". (We have it blocked for our kids from 7:30pm-8:00am, no need for them to have access after bed - we don't allow devices in the bedroom anyway. )

I made a separate group for "Grown Ups" and "Kids", the only difference being the grown ups don't have the same schedule.

I wish Google would show that the care about the safety of their customers and the millions of children who are in the homes of families using Google Nest stuff by making an extremely urgent effort to resolve this problem. But, at least this does give your home some protection from the massive amount of harm that can be done with unrestricted internet access.

I came across the same option the other day! Finally a way to fix this. Strange that no one from google even suggested it
