Weak Connection

I have a split level home of roughly 2700sf.  My nearest neighbor is about 1/2 mile away.  No new services/devices have been added to my house although 1 wall was removed to create a more open concept.  My services come into the basement (power, cable, internet...).

Case 1: For the past 3 years I have had my 1st Google Wifi set up in the basement attached to my router.  My 2nd point is in my dining room (1 room and 1 floor away), 3rd point is in the living room (2 rooms away but within eye sight, no walls).

I started having internet issues about 3 months ago (weak connection, dropped service, tv (in living room) buffering.  All speed tests show 450+Mbps and all connecting lines are CAT6.  I followed these instructions (they have been given multiple times on this forum):

*Do a full power cycle of the network - this will allow the entire network to re-establish connections. Here's how to do it properly.
  • Disconnect the power cable and Ethernet cable from the Google Nest Wifi router.
  • Disconnect the power cables from the other Wifi points.
  • Disconnect the power cable from the modem.
  • Allow the power to stay disconnected from all for 5 minutes.
  • Connect the power back to the modem only and wait for it to fully boot back up.
  • All lights should be lit up before moving to the next step.
  • After the modem is back online, connect the Ethernet cable to back to the Google Nest Wifi router's WAN port (globe symbol).
  • Connect the power cable back to Google Nest Wifi router and to other Wifi points.
  • Allow the all Wifi points to be fully back on.

These instructions made no difference to the signal quality, still showing as Weak on both of my wifi points.

Case 2: I moved my Main Google Wifi to the 1st floor running new CAT6 back to my router (30').  My 2nd wifi spot is now in the living room (eye sight to the main Google wifi modem) but the signal still shows as a Weak connection. No 3rd wifi puck is currently installed.

Any help on getting my service back to stable before I ditch these pucks?

Thanks

Once you realize google doesnt care.. it becomes easier to just go out and get something different. I got a tplink x3deco… very happy with it !

Sounds like I'll definitely have to look into another option, thank you for the suggestion!

Yes, it's a very easy fix actually. Go out and buy a TP LInk Deco. And never buy Google products again, they do not provide support on anything.

We moved into a new house - we had the Google Nest for years, always worked great - 3 access points.  The new house is bigger so after a few months I bought the New Nest pro 6e (2 3 packs, 6 total).  Ran around got them all to be a great connection.  Now a month later they are all weak.  I have turned ipv6 on and off, privacy settings off, we need a 2.4 network for vacuums, smart ceiling fans etc.  DNS has google entries.  This is insane!  The old 3 pucks were more stable than this.  over $600!!!!  What settings should I have?  I am on firmware version 1.63.327820

You're not going to get answers here, we been trying for years. I suggest returning them for a refund if you can. If not, eat the loss and call it a life lesson, never buy Google products. Get a TP Link.

For me, the weak signal seems to be a defect in the WiFi point itself.  Either hardware or firmware.

I have one unit, no matter how close or far I place it, it reports a weak signal.

I bought a new Google nest WiFi point and placing it in the same locations I get a "Great signal"

I'm pretty sure Google knows about this but is reluctant to admit it, and be forced to factory recall thousands of units.

So unless there is a firmware fix for this, I think we are simply up that creek, with no paddle

I’m pretty sure majority of the ppl either bought new mesh systems but

I thought I was losing my mind. I notice slow speeds when watching 4k media streaming. Then seen weak connections from 3 points. Tried to turn off cloud and preferred settings no go. But someone said in past post they unplugged their google minis and had great connections. Well I unplugged 2 of my minis in the area of the mesh system and now my points are “great” and fast speeds are back. Will check back later to update. But that totally sucks if minis can’t be used with in the mesh system.

Since I I have either a hub or mini in every room in my home (some rooms more than 1), I removed 3 mini's and it definitely made a difference in my signal strength. Interesting. Yet, still confusing. It seems like there should be some firmware update that could sort this out. Definitely glad I tried this. I did have an overkill of minis and hubs. Lol!

Ok I think I have a partial solution to use the mini. What I did was factory reset the mini and used the internet’s companies main Wi-Fi. I have att fiber and it comes with modem/router in one. Connected the mini to att router not google Wi-Fi name. Everything seems to be working on good connection.

On a side note, the cheap att router is giving me 300mbs while google is 100-150 tho. I needed the google Wi-Fi to split the 5ghz and 2.4ghz for smart products and farther Wi-Fi reach.

As I said, I realized that Google was not going to provide any support. This problem has been on going for almost 2 years now. I do not need any support, I fixed the problem by getting a TP-Link. Will no longer buy Google products.

Update, the minis have made the connection “weak” again. I was thinking of going Wi-Fi 6 nest but ppl are having more problems with those too. I’m just so use to having the best Wi-Fi hubs include voice assistant. I might have to ditch the whole nest Wi-Fi and go another mesh route and get more minis to compensate the voice assistants.

I used to be a HUGE Google fanboy. I was completely in on every product. This experience changed that and I couldn't be happier. I no longer have any Google products, except for the phone. I can not believe how much better everything is. Ditch the Google wifi and get a TP-Link Deco, you will thank me later. Replace your minis with Alexa, they are so much faster, it's amazing. I will never buy another Google product, I can't believe I was so blind for so long.

I'm with you on the Nest WiFi to TP-Link Deco, 100%.  The rest of the Google universe I feel is pretty **bleep** good.  We have a Nest Hub and Alexa, I use the Nest Hub way more often, mainly because of the display.  Alexa doesn't seem to know much and it's the most expensive kitchen timer I've ever had.

Reason I’m hesitant is because I have old nest door bell 3 old indoor cams, 2 nest hubs, 3 new outdoor cams, 2 new spot light cams. 1 chrome cast. New nest thermostat. Everything is on the google nest app. Air purifier, Samsung tv 15 kasa smart light switches, and various generic smart plugs and smart over. Once google took over nest camera the new cameras suck at 24/7 scrolling as it lags and will not load.

I might just change the the Wi-Fi to tp-link tho.

I returned the google Nest pro WiFi 6e - 6 units and troubled connections.  Now on TP-Deco - 4 units, all stable and better connections.  Google you need to either fix the issue or own up to it.  Unacceptable, I added an Amazon review to hopefully warn others

What speed do u have for internet provider?

What’s the fastest mbps for the tp link on a speed test do u get from the each point?

does Tp link have option for 5ghz and 2.4 ghz separate Wi-Fi names. For smart products that only use 2.4?

I have 1000mbps fiber from att. And get 100 ish from each “great” Wi-Fi nest point
