Weak Connection

Riva

Hi, I have a 3 Point google wifi setup in a 1800Sqft home(colonial). Cable Internet to my own Modem to the Google OnHub(the TP-Link Version). This is in my basement next to the cable feed coming in. On the lan side of the same OnHub I have a 8 port Gbit switch that runs to a Powerline adapter, NAS, Smart things hub. I also have another OnHub almost directly 1 floor above it(first floor), and a google puck one floot above that(2nd floor). We've been having poor connections a lot of times on random devices, speeds go up and down on some devices but not others. Speed on anything directly plugged in seems to be fine. But Google Wifi shows weak connection on both the 1st and 2nd floor points, even though they are on top of each other. Is there something wrong with the onHubs or is something else causing the weak connection?

Hi, Riva.

Sorry for the issues you're having with your connection and speed on your network. I imagine that's quite a frustrating experience. You definitely have enough coverage for your home with the router and two point setup. Let's see what might be going on here and come up with a fix for you.

Before we can really understand what's happening, I do have a few questions.

  • When you run a mesh test in the Home app, what are the results for each point?
  • If you move the points to different locations and run the mesh test again, do the results vary?
  • Have you tried putting both points on the first floor within two rooms of each other?

I think the biggest concern might be placement of points. Try a few different placements to see if it changes your results in regards to connection strength and reliability. If things are the same or no better, please come back and let me know and we'll continue to look at things.

Thanks.
