Wifi pro setup help

Ster1

Hello,

I just picked up the wifi pro 3 pack, and I have a question. I have my first one, the router set up and plugged in to power and Ethernet to my modem. Seems to be ok. I have 2 other nodes, and they’re both working with wireless backhaul. One of my nodes has an Ethernet cable going back to the router, so I’d like to connect that one with Ethernet backhaul. Is that possible? I have tried connecting the Lan port (2 arrows) together, and that didn’t work. Is it possible to connect that other node wired? Do I have to install it is another router instead of a node? Thanks for the help!

NVM. I set it up as a router and I’m all set. That didn’t work the first time I tried, I don’t know why.

Do I understand you correctly here in that the following works: Two Wifi Pro's as routers, both with Ethernet directly to the modem? They would have to extend the same network, they wouldn't create two separate ones?

I assume that would give better results than using one with Ethernet and the other as a point, wireless?

Yes. It should not work that way, with 2 routers, but it did, initially at least. My network map now shows 1 router and 2 points, but I set up one of those points as a router so it used the Ethernet cable for backhaul instead of the Wi-Fi. Maybe the system is smart enough to see what I was doing and make the proper change itself, back to 1 router. I know it’s working, because when I unplug the cable, that point falls off the map. I’m not crazy about this system because I can’t log in to the nodes, but as long as it does what I want it to do, I guess it’s ok.

Thanks for the response. My set up worked out fine, but I’m having ongoing problems dropping clients download speed. This happens 3’or 4 times a day, and I did manage to catch it in the act today. While the Google Wi-Fi network was showing down to 30-40 kbps to clients, my upstream router was showing a gig. So, something is intermittently wrong with my brand new mesh network. Please advise. Thank you.

Hi Ster1,

Kindly do a 2-minute power cycle on your entire network and observe if there are still issues with network performance. Here’s a guide:

  1. Disconnect the power from the modem.
  2. Disconnect the Ethernet cable and power cord from the parent point.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the child points.
  4. Leave everything unplugged for 2 minutes.
  5. Connect the power cord to the modem, then to your router and points.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Lovely

Yea, I did that already and no change.

Hey Ster1,

Verify if you are using a modem-router combo. If you do, please enable bridge mode before observing if there are any improvements. You may also try changing the DNS settings to see if that helps.

Thanks,
Lovely

I changed the DNS to Google DNS, and no change. My ISP uses PPPOE, which requires authentication. Since these Nest WiFi points have no local management, there does not seem to be a way to enter user IDs and passwords. Even when I do a factory reset and install them all again, there is no authentication, and as such, no connectivity.

Hey there Ster1,

Apologies for the delay and we appreciate you taking the time to try the provided troubleshooting steps. To go further, try turning off the IPv6. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap the Wi-Fi coin  and then Settings Settings.
  3. Scroll down and tap Advanced networking.
  4. Scroll down to IPv6.
  5. Toggle the switch off Toggle button off.

Let us know how it goes.

Kind regards,

Dan
