I have gigabit internet through att fiber and just bought a google nest wifi 2 pack a week ago. Setup was a breeze and everything looked good until I noticed my upload speeds were capped at 100mbps on every device behind the nest. Google advised a replacement so I did just that. Everything looked perfect for a day - i was getting expected speeds for wired at 800mbps and wireless was around 300 - 400mbps up and down. I check today - same issue as before where all devices are getting great download speeds but capped at 100mbps upload. I found out, however, that if I select a device as priority in google home, that device now works as I expect. Its like the nest is throttling every device in my network for some reason unless i say otherwise. The priority settings fixes both wired and wireless settings. Im pretty sure the problem must be on the Google side since that change fixes the issue. If I could prioritize all devices 24 hours a day, I would be happy with that workaround 🙂
For reference the setup is
ATT ONT --- ATT Router (bypass mode) --- Google Wifi
Wifi has been disabled on the ATT router and that router is now simply forwarding all traffic to the google nest. I put in a ticket with google who requested I put the router in bypass mode and force DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, These changes made no difference. They then requested logs and are reviewing the files I sent them via the home app and will get back to me. During testing, they told me not to prioritize a device but thats the only way things work as they should. Im seriously considering returning the nest wifi but wanted to hear if anyone else had issues like this. Again, two different nest routers having the exact same issue.
I put in a ticket with ATT who said there should be nothing on their end throttling the traffic. If I plug my computer into the same att router port as the google wifi (move the nest off the port, then replace with my computer), the computer links up at a gig and the speeds look fine.

I can confirm the same exact issue as 100’s of people have as well. It’s clearly a nest issue.
04-28-2022 11:45 AM
Yes, very true. I was thinking the first gen Google Wi-Fi.
before changing to Deco, I analyzed getting three nest routers (no access points), but even at that I know I wouldn’t get the desired speeds I would want.
That’s crazy that you’re going from 500 to 100.
04-28-2022 11:53 AM
Yeah, first gen was better in that way.
Crazy - indeed! In my research i found out that this is due to an software update about 6 months ago.
I can trick the Nest router to handle 500/500 by doing some modifications but then the router has huge amount of packetloss and i get like 1000-1500ms on and off.
Ill go with 100/100 right now and hopes for an solution by Google dev team.... Or else ill go with TP Link or Dlink mesh and try to trade this in for an store credit or something.

One of my coworkers suggested changing my computer's DNS to a public one. I am using Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1.
It's improved the loading speed of internet-using apps on my Macbook Pro, so at least I can work from home without issues. Zoom and video are fine. But when I run a speed test, I'm still only getting ~100 mbps up and down (on mobile and desktop), and I'm only a few feet from a Google Nest access puck.
The Google Home speed test still registers 900 mbps (closer to the 1000 fiber I pay for).
So yeah, I dunno. I still want to run Cat 6 long-term, but I'm no longer gung-ho on dumping the Nest. Might still return it.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I called google support and they had me manually input those things…it changed nothing honestly.
I tried everything to not give up on the Google. Unfortunately, moving on was the best decision to get better internet speeds.
I also have Fiber and the app was reading solid speeds, but, actual performance was simply not there.
04-28-2022 02:54 PM
Super frustrating.
04-28-2022 04:07 PM
I agree. I have fiber speeds, but my zoom call kept lagging….that was not okay by me. I have great connection, great speeds, and great equipment. Something had to be fixed and this is why I’m actively posting because I went through the process to know that it just isn’t possible to mesh at high speeds…I mean, the one thing I didn’t try was…
getting multiple Nest routers and use the routers as access points. I assume with fiber speeds we’d get around 500 MBPS. But, that is A way to get higher speeds with Google products that I have not tested. To confirm, this would be buying the Google Nest routers individually because the set comes with access points.

Same here as all others. Capping right around 100 but 800+ at the cable, even with the new firmware or after reboot/reset. If not updated soon, I'll be out as well.
05-02-2022 09:56 AM
After looking through this and seeing that obviously, Google doesn't have a fix, or just doesn't care - I put an order in yesterday for an entirely different mesh system. It's not the "when it's working, it caps me at 100" aspect, as that is at least fairly workable. Rather, the "when it doesn't work, it really doesn't work" of occasional router-driven brief outages, or "ramping" requests. I don't have time, nor patience to wait even longer for fixes.
05-01-2022 11:40 PM
@Jeff The firmware didn't fix anything for a lot of us. Haven't heard from google on this for a while and wifi support seems oblivious to the issue. Can we get an update on when and how Google is going to fix this.
05-03-2022 04:32 AM
Off topic but worth mentioning the two totally different experiences I've had with Google devices.
1. Google Mesh
Throttled bandwidth, kept dropping devices from WiFi, in warranty but still took nearly 6 months to have Google take them back and give me a full refund.
2. Nest Thermostat
Got while it was Nest before Google bought them out. The Heatlink wall unit (the bit between the thermostat and the boiler) failed and, even though it was 6 months out of warranty, has a replacement unit on the way within 20 minutes of my first call and also €100 towards the installation of the new unit.
Maybe the WiFi division could learn some customer support from the Thermo division.
My €0.02 worth.

Do you know if Google had issued any recall or similar field action for these Google Mesh. These products are obviously defective and Google must remedy the situation for consumers.
05-04-2022 10:01 AM
I haven’t seen anything regarding a recall. It might take a class action to get google to even acknowledge it.

Disgusted that Google have pretty much ignored this issue with a product that is not cheap for a lot of users. Waited patienlty for the new firmware, only for it to be next to useless. I cant even sell my Mesh on in good faith to anyone, so it is now going to cost me a lot to replace with an alternative. The very least I would expect from Google at this stage is to offer either a working alternative product or a full reimburesemnt, I for one, will certainly be avoiding any Google hardware in the future.
I will also be advising any friends, family and colleagues to also avoid.

Update from here: I have returned my Nest Wifi router and 2 access pucks. Back to the ISP router for now until I can run Cat 6 through my attic.

Hello All
i have fiber router from my ISP with 100Mbps , and i have 6 google mesh routers , 3 Nest Wifi points one of them is the Main Nest Router which connected to the Main Fiber Router , and another 3 Google WIfi points
when my device is connected to the Main Nest Router i got the full speed , but when my device is connected to any of the other points , i got 30-50 Mbps
i contacted the support and they asked if i can reach my ISP to change their fiber router setting to Bridge mode , i still didnt do that
but have any of you faced this ? or was the slow-down issue already resolved ?
05-05-2022 03:43 AM
just passed again to help others
i just stopped prioritized services and Preferred activies ( Video Conferencing & Gaming ) , and disabled IPv6 , and restarted the whole mesh network ,,, and booom , the issue was resolved

@OsamaAbukmail thanks for the tip! This didn't work on my setup but hopefully it will help others.
05-05-2022 04:58 PM
Report back in a day or 2, LOL.
11-17-2022 08:39 AM
OMG, @OsamaAbukmail, this worked for me. Finally someone with a solution. They should def give you a job a Google, you're def better than the "techs" working there now lol.
Thank you

I'll be waiting for your follow up post...😁

Just a quick update. I think Google has done a stealth update since the last firmware release - my current firmware ends in .81 (last two digits). I think it was released as .80. The good news is that for the last 24 hours my wifi mesh network now gets close to 400 mbps across the 2 access points instead of the 300 it has been giving for close to a year. Yay! Yep not as good as I would want - given the 900 mbps plan, but I'll take any shift in the right direction ...
05-06-2022 03:53 PM
Thanks for the update. One of my pucks updated but the others haven’t. Did all of yours update. Sadly performance is still really bad for me.
05-06-2022 05:13 PM
Just checked my router and both of my APs are running firmware ending in .81. If yours aren't you may want to restart and do it one at a time and see if they update to .81 @jas2
05-06-2022 05:16 PM - edited 05-06-2022 05:23 PM
Thanks for the update. All my points are now updated to .81. I get 950mbs when wired directly to my modem. However, even with 5 points in a 1500 square foot home I went from 90mbs to 20 mbs on .81 even after several restarts. Haha. Google’s handling of this is a joke. @Jeff
05-06-2022 04:12 PM
Mine worse at .81 !
05-06-2022 04:25 PM
@Jeff can anyone from google chime in and let us know what’s going on. The Silence from y’all isn’t going over well.
05-09-2022 06:20 AM
Hey guys,
I maybe got an fix for you guys that where capped at 100/100.
Ive done some more troubleshooting today and found out that the UPnP option is maybe the culprit to all speed issues.
Today my router started to reboot again and again for like 2 hours and then i decided to troubleshoot again and tried to disable UPnP option. After disabling the UPnP option the router stopped his infinite rebooting and when i then ran an speed test i got my 500/500Mbit/s on all compatible devices and also through cable.
I recommend all of you that is running .81 FW to disable UPnP and run an speedtest.
05-10-2022 05:45 PM
Thanks for the heads up. Sadly no improvement on my end. Tried it a few times and my speeds got worse about 30 or 45 mps with it disabled. Still crickets from google.
05-17-2022 06:38 AM
Iam sorry to hear that!
The speed throttling/capping was resolved for me and i got my 500/500Mbit/s med the off and on packetloss issue wasnt resolved (can only see the issues when iam playing PC games).
Ive now recieved an replacement unit for the Nest Router and will sell the whole Google Nest Router system i got on Ebay or something.
I bought an TP Link X50 (3 pack) instead and its working so much better and everything is great. No packet loss, no loss of speed and so on.
Too bad Google cant get their things togheter and make an good product 🙂

This thread is a joke
@Jeff ... stop lying to everyone about this being looked into for many many months. We have paid for a product that isnt working as desired
It is a simple fix, stop limiting internet. Stop prioritising a void of nothingness, prioritise devices trying to use the network speeds customers are paying for.
There are currently two 'Preferred Activities' in the settings , 'Video conferecing' & 'Gaming'. When none of these are selected speeds are still harshly limited
I have reset the network multiple times, yet it still throttles...
I purchased a google product having thought it would be reliable and i could trust it would operate at speeds that i am paying for. I was wrong
05-12-2022 04:05 PM
Hey Brad,
The truth is that Google doesn't care about their customer and their products are filled with design flaws. From the pixel phones to google buds, to this products, you will find design flaws that google refuse to acknowledge and fix. I have learned my lesson and move on from google product. it's a waste of time try to convince them to look into it, because they just don't care since they already got their money.
05-14-2022 02:57 AM
This post is mostly venting: I’ve been trying to work with google support but at this point I’ve clocked almost 15 hours with them to not avail. The whole team is basically incompetent on the trouble shooting side (sorry y’all it’s but if it wasn’t true things would be fixed) and @@Jeff or another google team member would actually comment on these recent post. Does anyone have experience with kicking off class action lawsuits? I know they never payout much but google at least needs a few slaps on the wrist for their horrible producers and customer service.
05-15-2022 09:49 AM
I’m having same problem, upgraded to Virgin Media (uk) 1gb fibre broadband and wifi speed is only 100-200 and sat next to main router. Never had this problem had google WiFI 4 years
05-15-2022 10:01 AM
Alright. I was able to fix this last night - so far - and it’s holding up - so far. I’m using the new .81, which ‘might’ make a difference because this exact same thing didn’t work for me in .80.
In the Home app, tap WiFi, then the gear in the top right for Settings. Tap Preferred Activities. Both boxes are unchecked, right? It’s the same solution previously posted that didn’t work - even for me.
Check the box for Video conferencing. Wait a second for it to spin. Uncheck it. Go back and do a speed test.
As always your mileage may vary, and I was super skeptical because the Home app never gave me more than 91 mbps and immediately after running it, neither would the Speedtest app.
05-15-2022 11:17 AM
Tried this solution and didn’t work for me and I’m on .81. This is so frustrating
05-16-2022 10:27 AM
Tried it as well to no avail.
05-17-2022 06:19 AM
Thank you @wireddave but this didn't work for me either
05-19-2022 02:53 PM
Even when somebody thinks a solution works, it usually doesn't after a few
days. Don't trust any solutions until it's still working at high speed a week later.
05-19-2022 01:26 PM
I currently have the Google wifi, would it be an improvement if I purchased just the 1 nest wifi router, and used the older Google Wifi as add ons to the 1 newer one, would I see any improvement.
Had Virgin media check everything and its the Google Wifi, I got better speeds with the Virgin hub wifi.
Dissapointed
