Wired / Wireless Upload speeds capped at 100mbps? ATT Fiber

sliderkb2
Community Member

I have gigabit internet through att fiber and just bought a google nest wifi 2 pack a week ago. Setup was a breeze and everything looked good until I noticed my upload speeds were capped at 100mbps on every device behind the nest. Google advised a replacement so I did just that. Everything looked perfect for a day - i was getting expected speeds for wired at 800mbps and wireless was around 300 - 400mbps up and down. I check today - same issue as before where all devices are getting great download speeds but capped at 100mbps upload. I found out, however, that if I select a device as priority in google home, that device now works as I expect. Its like the nest is throttling every device in my network for some reason unless i say otherwise. The priority settings fixes both wired and wireless settings. Im pretty sure the problem must be on the Google side since that change fixes the issue. If I could prioritize all devices 24 hours a day, I would be happy with that workaround 🙂

For reference the setup is

ATT ONT --- ATT Router (bypass mode) --- Google Wifi

Wifi has been disabled on the ATT router and that router is now simply forwarding all traffic to the google nest. I put in a ticket with google who requested I put the router in bypass mode and force DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, These changes made no difference. They then requested logs and are reviewing the files I sent them via the home app and will get back to me. During testing, they told me not to prioritize a device but thats the only way things work as they should. Im seriously considering returning the nest wifi but wanted to hear if anyone else had issues like this. Again, two different nest routers having the exact same issue.

I put in a ticket with ATT who said there should be nothing on their end throttling the traffic. If I plug my computer into the same att router port as the google wifi (move the nest off the port, then replace with my computer), the computer links up at a gig and the speeds look fine.

Hello @sliderkb2

I've seen a couple other cases of this kind of performance issue where setting a device as prioritized resolves it (albeit temporarily). I am hoping someone from the Google team can take a closer look at this.

@MichaelP - do you know if these issues go beyond some sort of compatibility with ATT? Ive only seen this issue with my provider ATT. Do you know if there is a way to determine the negotiated link speed of the interfaces on the nest wifi router? Im wondering if its simply negotiating at 100mbps vs 1000mbps

I don't think this is ATT-specific – at least, I haven't seen that pattern (though there aren't a ton of people experiencing this, so I could be missing that correlation). Determining the negotiated Ethernet link speed is going to be difficult without pulling a diagnostic dump and decoding it. But, if you run an internet speed test (in the Google Home app), and it produces results significantly higher than 100Mbps, then I would assume the Ethernet link speed / cable isn't the issue. In addition, since prioritizing one device fixes it (albeit temporarily), that's another indication this isn't an Ethernet link speed / cable issue.

@MichaelP makes sense - thanks for your input. I made a reddit post and several other people are saying the same thing regarding their upload speeds.

https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleWiFi/comments/pni6px/wired_wireless_upload_speeds_capped_at_100mbps/

I feel like this issue needs to be escalated.

@MichaelP I forgot to mention the google home app shows the same issue - no upload speeds get above 100mbps.

Ok, hang on – if the internet speed test (the one that runs automatically every couple days, but can also be run manually from the Google Home app) never shows more than 100Mbps in the uplink direction (and assuming your internet connection supports more than that), then I would start looking at that Ethernet cable. It's possible you have two problems here.

@MichaelP You are correct but Im using the supplied cable on the wan port and have the same experience using other cables I know transmit at 1Gb. I would also suspect the cable if the priority selection didnt work.

Hi, sliderkb2.

Thanks for coming to the community and sharing your experience. It looks like a frustrating thing to be dealing with, and it's definitely not in line with how the product should be working. Also, thanks for all you have been willing to test and look into on your end.

So as MichaelP said, we've been seeing some of this pop up with other users as well and I'm taking this to our internal teams and pushing it to a higher level of support. We should be able to dive deeper into this and work out what's going on. In the meantime, I'll be keeping things updated on what we know as it comes to light.

Also, I will be reaching out to you directly to get some additional information that will assist our internal teams. Thanks.

So, I should just buy new wifi system until you can get yours working properly? That is pure BS! I purchased 5 of your points and it is garbage coverage! Maybe another vendor is a better solution. A total waste of $500 on google products.

Have you any updates Jeff ?

😂😂

I guarantee you that they “are aware of the issue and are working on it!”

They’re  such a joke. Just abandon this POS system and get a more reliable one.

Hi Jeff

assuming the unreasonable time this issue is affecting so many people, and the fact that the mighty Google can't solve it, bring me to think that the problem is related to the hardware of the product and no SW fix will be able to solve it.  and HW issues are solved via recall mechanism which is a totally different ball game.

well I see this issue has been going for months already, and this still hasn't been fixed. My issue with my WiFi connection dropping has started about 2 weeks already and when I go to Google support through the chat and they have the nerve to want to charge me a dollar for????

issue has actually been more than a few months and no fix.  I just gave up and bought something else.

What did you buy?

I bought the ASUS ROG Rapture GT6 tri-band gaming mesh. It is expensive but works very well.

I just bought the latest Google Wi-Fi and it sucks.  I cannot get download speeds past 400 and that’s even hardwired with a 1gig service plan.

Hello all,

Issue is MAYBE due to wifi fallback, i.e. if a slower device, lets say a b or g device connects to the wifi, the entire wifi will slow down to b or g..

Hey, sliderkb2.

Just as a quick follow up, we're still on this and it's being addressed internally. As of yet, I don't need that additional info from you, but I may be reaching out again if there's more we need to know.

Thanks.

Hi @Jeff I appreciate the follow up. My concern is whether or not to return the device in case the issue isnt able to be resolved. Would it be possible to reach out privately to talk about options?

@Jeff thanks for the reply but no change and I would love to escalate the ticket. Case ID [2-5246000031810]. If there is anything you can recommend I would be happy to try it.

Hello Jeff.  I am having the same problem.  1GB AT&T Fiber service that works at full speed when directly connected to it, but the output from the Nest WiFi Router reduces the speed to 100M/100M -- as others have said, I reset the enter mesh network, and it temporarily worked at the correct speed, then again went back to the 100M/100M -- I purchased an ASUS XT8 today which doesn't have this problem when connected to the same 1G ATT Fiber.  It seems this issue has been around with Google for MONTHS now with no resolution.  Are the Nest Routers incompatible with internet speeds over 100M?

I have a 100M limit by my ISP for a lower price. I get that speed with my Nest Wi-Fi. However, I still have connection droppage with one of my internet radio devices that can be seen and heard. The droppage is absorbed by my other devices I assume. Like my Echo's. They don't disconnect and have to reconnect to the Nest mesh system like my Grace Digital radio does. This didn't happen with my Wi-Fi mesh. Only after I updated by adding the newer Nest Wi-Fi.

The ASUS XT mesh works, so I’m going to sell my Google/Nest routers on eBay - it’s crazy they are still selling these units given they don’t work & Google has no solution. I had 5 Google Nest units and it just cost $800 to replace them with ASUS. But I’ve heard Ubiquity Access Points are really the only affordable units that work properly.

Hi Jeff. Just checking to see if there is anything happening on this front. I have the exact same issue with intermittently slow speeds that are only fixed with a restart of the Google wifi system. Phone support has not helped at all. This seems to be a fairly widespread issue.

pico303

Every night, my Google Wifi mesh slows down to a crawl.  There's nothing wrong with the Internet speeds; all the devices directly wired to the modem are getting 400+ Mbps.  But the wifi network drops to 25 Mbps.  If I reset the network, the wifi speed jumps back up to 400 Mbps, only to slow down again the following night (around 1 or 2 a.m.).

Wifi performance never recovers on its own.  You have to reset the network, or the device stays at 25 Mbps forever, until you restart the main puck or reset the network.

Anyone have similar issues, or have an idea of how to solve it?  Maybe I should reset all my pucks and build my network back from scratch...?

Hey, pico303 and Chaos. If you'll notice, I've merged this thread with another thread where users are reporting the same issue. We're following the problem internally, and we'll keep this thread updated as we know more.

Thanks.

Exact same issue on my side. Wired connection stays strong but wifi dips to under 20mb/sec and will not recover until I reset the Google/Nest wifi network. Any updates on your side?

Is your Nest Wifi new?  If it is, be sure to reboot your ISP's modem to get a fresh connection.

If your Net Wifi is not new, how long has the slow speeds been happening?  Has anything at all changed with your setup? Have you rebooted the entire sytem (Nest Wifi and ISP Modem)?

Can you connect directly to your ISP's modem and run a speed test that way, to ensure your actual connection is not at fault?

I connected my ISP's modem directly yesterday, the speed was 537Mbps. The ISP was OK.  When I connected the Nest Wifi , the wifi speed was only 5Mbps...(I rebooted the modem and Nest Wifi). Also I tried to change the modem mode to bridge, It didn't work either.

The Nest WiFi is about 6 months old.  Yes, I have rebooted the AT&T fiber optic box and router multiple times, and again, if you connect directly to their router, the speed is 1G/1G.  The slow speeds have been happening for about 3 months now, since around Sep/Oct 2021 as far as I can tell.  Yes, I have rebooted the entire system many times.  I reset the entire Google Nest (even switched the main unit to another Google Nest unit) and while it worked for a few days, the problem resurfaced a few days later -- the output of the Google Nest drops to below 100M/100M.  Yes, I can connect directly to my ISPs mode, and run a speed test, and then the actual connection is 1G/1G.

My ISP is fiber, 300 Mbps down & up. Connecting my laptop directly to the fiber WAN port, I consistently see at least 320 Mbps down & up (my IPS over-provisions).  When I initially set up the Nest Wifi router, it also gets the same fast speeds for a while, but it eventually goes down to about 15 Mbps down, and maybe 275 Mbps up.  I am using Speedtest.net on the laptop over ethernet, and the Google Home speed test to check this.

I am using an unmanaged switch to hardwire via ethernet to mesh to a couple of older Google Wifi pucks, a few computers, a couple HDHomerun network tuners.

I tried:

Swapped cables, only using the ones that test out okay on the direct fiber to laptop connection.

I also swapped in and out the Nest router with the older Google Wifi routers,  The older routers also deliver full 320 speed for a while, but then lose it.

I also tried reducing the complexity by changing the Wifi name to something else so my devices do not connect, and also only connecting the laptop via ethernet, so it was the only device.

I have factory reset the routers 4 times.

Any ideas?  I used to have just 3 of the old Google Wifi routers meshed, and would consistently get full speed with them.  I thought adding a new Nest Wifi  router might help since it has a faster processor, and more memory but it is also not working right.
