Wired / Wireless Upload speeds capped at 100mbps? ATT Fiber

sliderkb2
Community Member

I have gigabit internet through att fiber and just bought a google nest wifi 2 pack a week ago. Setup was a breeze and everything looked good until I noticed my upload speeds were capped at 100mbps on every device behind the nest. Google advised a replacement so I did just that. Everything looked perfect for a day - i was getting expected speeds for wired at 800mbps and wireless was around 300 - 400mbps up and down. I check today - same issue as before where all devices are getting great download speeds but capped at 100mbps upload. I found out, however, that if I select a device as priority in google home, that device now works as I expect. Its like the nest is throttling every device in my network for some reason unless i say otherwise. The priority settings fixes both wired and wireless settings. Im pretty sure the problem must be on the Google side since that change fixes the issue. If I could prioritize all devices 24 hours a day, I would be happy with that workaround 🙂

For reference the setup is

ATT ONT --- ATT Router (bypass mode) --- Google Wifi

Wifi has been disabled on the ATT router and that router is now simply forwarding all traffic to the google nest. I put in a ticket with google who requested I put the router in bypass mode and force DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, These changes made no difference. They then requested logs and are reviewing the files I sent them via the home app and will get back to me. During testing, they told me not to prioritize a device but thats the only way things work as they should. Im seriously considering returning the nest wifi but wanted to hear if anyone else had issues like this. Again, two different nest routers having the exact same issue.

I put in a ticket with ATT who said there should be nothing on their end throttling the traffic. If I plug my computer into the same att router port as the google wifi (move the nest off the port, then replace with my computer), the computer links up at a gig and the speeds look fine.

This will be my last post on this thread and I will drop off since I've replaced my Google/Nest Mesh with a TP-Link system, which has been working great for 2 weeks now.  I have one thing to share with everyone on something I observed as I did a factory reset on my Google Mesh nodes to sell them.

My system was 1 Nest Node as the router and 3 Google nodes around my split level home.  I was stuck at 130mbps down thru the mesh but could get 480mbps wired to the router.  When I reset the 3 Google Mesh node to factory leaving me with only ONE Nest node and no MESH I got 470 mbps in that room, and 370 mbps in my farthest room.  That is comparable to what I'm getting with the TP-Link system.  I don't know if this will last but I did get performance and maybe it can helps some of you while you wait it out.  I feel for you!

Can we just unplug the other points to try this?

I just ordered the TP-Link W7200 from Walmart. Arrives Saturday. Any hints on setup and use?

This will probably be my last post as well ..... frustated to no end.

2 Nest routers and 2 Nest APs , with a switch attached to primary router, 2nd router as an AP with ethernet to my computer and the other 2 APs set around the house to ensure coverage, especially for my nest cameras on the garage.

Wifi would either come to a crawl or stop completely at random times.... NOT my ISP issue, as speed issues also  affected file copying from my computer wired to AP router  to  NAS attached to Primary router would drop from 50-70,000kps to around 3,000kps and remain that way until a reset of network

Internet speeds drop to less than 30Mbps if it didn't drop completely ....

Reboot the entire system, would fix it.....some days multiple reboots, sometimes a day or two without trouble

Google, perhaps you should add a REBOOT SCHEDULE to the settings like my new Synology RT2600AC has?  I can set a reboot at 6am, so that perhaps i can get through the day without being affected?

Anyway, setup my new RT2600AC with 2 MR2200ACs ..... 2nd day now and not one issue so far

Capabilities of this router are amazing, almost commercial grade if you want to get into the nuances.

BUT I CAN TEST internal throughput from Router to APs to really give me an idea if the link is good or not.

GOOGLE add some more diagnostic capabilities so the power users can help you track down your issues.

Google actually took away information this year. Google Wi-Fi app would tell us performance of each access Point. They killed that app and forced us all to the Google Home app, which only tells us speed at the router. For the mesh system it just identifies performance as great/good/weak. Not terribly helpful.

I have the exact same issue. Once I reboot, everything works fine, otherwise after 1-3 days, the connection degrades to 1-5Mbps (from 300Mbps)

If they added schedule reboot option, that would be awesome.

Unfortunately I am having the same issues.

I have a nest wifi 3 pack (router and 2 points) and had it installed for many months without issue. Initially it worked great and reliably with absolutely no connection losses. After a few months of using it it started to lose internet connection randomly. Somewhere around 2-3 times per week I would just have no internet on my network, despite my network still actually being up and running. I spent hours and days dealing with Google support, with my ISP, searching the internet - nothing would fix my issue. When this would happen, my internet still would work directly from my ISP's modem/router both wired and wirelessly but nothing form my nest wifi nor anything wired downstream of it worked. The only way to get it back is to physically unplug and replug in the main nest router which is a huge pain and a disaster when you are away and can't access your cameras/security system or are on a client call from your home office as is the case for my wife.

Eventually Google support ran out of troubleshooting steps and replaced my main router. For a few months it was fine and then all of a sudden it has started to happen again. From the time I initially setup the network, to when it started to fail, to when I received a replacement, to when the new one started to fail there have been no major changes to my house, my setup, my wiring, etc.

This is absolutely ridiculous. I am pissed about how long I've spent trying to solve this without resolution, then I stumble upon countless articles and forums of others having the same issue over the last several months and STILL NO SOLUTION. How can a software company be this bad at software? What a joke. Wifi above all else needs to be reliable. At this point my entire mesh system is hundreds of dollars of trash and frustration. If this has been known for months now, how the hell is it not fixed yet? That is insane. And when I contact support, I get them trying to go back to step #1 of troubleshooting. What a horrible experience. Just stop making products if this is the best you can do.

I feel your pain. I have been dealing with this for 8-10 months. I initially had Google wifi in another house before I moved. Worked fairly reliably. Then decided to upgrade with Nest wifi router. Maybe a little bit better at first. Then I moved into a much larger house and added 3-4 more pucks. Have a total of 7 or 8. I have most hardwired. Most are routers. Only one is an AP. All the wiring is perfect. No issues otherwise. Same crap. Despite the hardwire backhaul...the wifi fluctuates greatly. It truly seems like to me that the pucks are not always 'meshing'. Almost like they are working individually or that the device cannot get hold of one. When it works I get 500+, then in the same location for no reason it throttles down to 50 or lower. It used to drop off altogether but now it will sometimes crawl in single digits. I restart the main router through home app and it usually gets better. I have contacted Google many times with exactly the same BS support...which is no support...I tried fewer pucks and more. I tried everything. My buddy had the same issue and switched to eero pro. Says that never caused this problem. I would switch in a heartbeat but I have 3 sets of pucks. Would really suck for me given the amount of money I spent but it might be worth it since I have gotten nowhere this entire year. Of note, I have good wired speeds it is just the wifi which of course is critical for most devices.

This is very frustrating. I have been rebooting and resetting devices in the hope of this fixing the issues prior to me finding this thread. @User123456 you have to get this sorted. I unfortunately have recommended google wifi to a couple of friends and family members as performance up until recently was solid. To see that i am not the only person this is affecting and there appears to be no response from google is dissapointing to say the least.   Please update the community with a rough timeline for a fix!

As per the suggestion from a kind person earlier on here (apologies I cant find the OP) I decided to try adding a switch. modem -- switch -- Google Nest.  I purchased a TP-Link TL-SG1005D for just £10 on Amazon, and from last night til now my wifi has improved from 20mb to 500mb and no dropout recored yet. Thanks for nothing google

I have done that. Have a 16 node switch. It has been connected for months now. No joy...

The original wifi could have been named 'a wet dream'. It was that good. These muppets at Google just had to make it fancier, and crappier. I curse these muppets - may they suffer less than 10 mbps speeds, frequest drop-outs, and that they spend their lives sitting in front of netlix watching it move from 1.0000007% to 1.00000071%.....

Wait, Modem into switch FIRST and nest/router plugged into switch ??

DJDJ

Mine is Modem-Router-Nest-Switch.

My ISP insists that Router comes after Modem. I thought that'd be the issue - only that this setup works like a charm with the older WiFi nodes (gen 1), but nest can't seem to handle it. Also, all other mesh products work in this sequence. P ly nest decides to hose the party

Also having the same problem. Have two Google WiFi pucks and this last week upgraded my internet speed from 200Mbps to 1gb. Wifi will not register speeds past the 1############Mbps mark.

Have restarted network. Reset modem. Still the same issues. Very frustrating.

This issue is not new, so I guess that everyone here already knows and agree that Google and @Jeff is just trying to tire us out. It is so ridiculous that I bought a power outlet timer to make my router restart twice a day and avoid speed struggles and countless disconnects.

Just a quick update from my side. I did end up on a call with Google where they did a bunch of troubleshooting, including a factory reset. Unfortunately that didn't help. BUT, today I decided to unplug my main unit from my Wired Ethernet switch. When I did and then plugged it back in (without powering it off) the speed went back up. Do we all have the commonality of having a switch in the picture?

I think the issue that all of us are having is the Google Router is NOT able to manage BOTH Routing & Mesh network.  Connection seems to degrade over few days.

I do.

Actually can Google just give us a refund and let us return the router that is not able to work properly?

The same thing was happening to my set of three google nest. ~100mbps instead of my 220mbps of internet speed. And ~100mbps instead of ~500mbps for the internal network speed test (I setup an internal server in local network). I have all my routers with wired backhaul set up.

Then I did the mesh test in the google home app, and it showed me that one of my nest has good connection instead of great connection. Well, I take out the Ethernet cable from that router and connected it to my laptop. The test speed showed me the same 100mbps (directly connected to the server) and the wire connection showed me just 100mb, not the 1gb that I had before (in network utility). Reconnecting Ethernet cable form the outlet resolved this issue.

And now I have back my max speeds with more than 500mbps for internal speed tests and 220mbps for the internet. The reason was due to the lack connection of my Ethernet cable from router to the outlet.

Note: I did not restart my mesh, just executed the test mesh after cable reconnection. Will see how it goes then. Now on I need to keep my eye on it since so many replies posted here.

Could you explain what you did a little clearer? Not sure?

thx

Just reconnected my ethernet cable to the access point and the outlet in the wall (one of my access points that were connected to the main router had a worse connection than others). I have cat5e wires through all my walls... It looked like it was a connection issue with my cable and outlet in the wall. When not all 8 pins are connected (with cat5e,cat6 type cables), the speed limits to 100mbps.

Then I executed the mesh testing in my google home app (Home->Wi-FI->Wifi Devices->Test Mesh).

Speed came back when I replug the cable.

Hi, all.

I know you're all frustrated. I understand that fully. I'm still waiting for information too. I wish I had more to share. For those still waiting, sending in your device feedback (if you haven't) is still very helpful for us. You can do that right through the Home app. In the meantime, I'll keep watching the thread. I really hope to have info coming at some point soon.

Thanks.

I've had to stop using my Nest, will probably send it back. Trouble with it is it worked fine with no slow speed tests but my works laptop in the VPN ran incredibly slow on it plus it's not WiFi 6. If your in the U.K. Amazon now have the Eero Pro 6 available.

Strangely (but luckily), I've found that my Nest Wifi has "stabilized" over time.  Previously, I was seeing only *upload* speed issues, and usually only from my iPhone (while all other devices seem unaffected). See my previous messages to this thread.

For about a month now though, I've noticed no speed issues or throttling.  I've not changed any settings since then, (though via my ISP, I recently was bumped to a 500mbsp/500mbsp plan, but that was only a week ago).

In case it helps anyone (I honestly have no clue if it will, as I don't know how things were "fixed" for me), here's some notes on my setup:

  • I'm in two story house, with two new (as of Aug/Sept) Nest Wifi Routers. Main router is in the lower level, hooked up directly to my ISP's modem.  Second router acts as an access point and is upstairs
  • I also have MoCA in my house. So the two routers have a "wired" backhaul via MoCA.  The main router's (downstairs) output cable goes to a MoCA adapter. The secondary router (upstairs) input cable comes from a MoCA adapter.  (I have no switches or anything else. It's just modem <-> Nest Router <-> MoCA <-> secondary Nest Router )
  • I have about 25 devices connected to my network at a given time (mostly smart home stuff).  However, this includes three laptops (2 always wireless, 1 usually "wired" via MoCA), several iPads, iPhones, etc.
  • Previously, I had found most of those devices had reasonable upload/download speeds (usually in the 400/400 range, out of a max of 500/500). The exceptions were my iPhone and iPad, which sometimes were significantly throttled to an upload speed of <5mbps.  However, those problems have disappeared over time (somehow the network stabilized itself?).  I always measure the device speed via Ookla Speedtest (iOS app or website), not via the Google Home app.
  • I work from home and am on video calls daily (via a wired laptop), and have noticed no instability in video/audio (at least nothing that seems directly related to my network).  Also use Facetime with family/friends (on iPad or iPhone), nothing noticed there either.
  • Here's an overview of my Google Home configuration for the Nest Router:
    • Guest Network: I do have a guest network primarily for the smart home devices & guests. So, the main network does have a lot fewer devices (around 8), while the guest network has around 17+.
    • Preferred Activities:  Only enabled "Video conferencing"
    • Privacy Settings: All settings enabled
    • WPA3 is off
    • DNS.  I've customized to use 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
    • UPnP is enabled. IPv6 is disabled.
    • No DHCP reservations or port forwarding rules.
    • No devices are ever prioritized (and I've refrained from doing so, as it seems like that ends up being problematic)

I honestly wish I could pinpoint what has changed, as I was also one of the frustrated ones.  I have to admit, I'm also refraining from touching or restarting anything for fear of the issues coming back.  But, I wanted to share this in case it's helpful to anyone out there.

Ok, I can't deal with this issue any longer.  Like so many others these days, my home wifi is my livelihood.  I need a reliable system to be able to work from home.  I've thrown way too much money away on my 9 Nest Wifi devices for my 2 homes.  I need to switch to a reliable mesh system.  What is everyone switching over to?  I need some recommendations.  I don't want to take another chance and have major issues again.  I need some stability again until Google gets their issues resolved.  Thanks in advance!

I bought TP-Link Deco W7200 two unit package for $229 from Walmart. Works fine so far. Tech support was slow to answer and not friendly. Google has always been the opposite for me.

Prior to Nest, I used Ubiquiti at home and at our church. Both have always worked great. I switched to Nest because of Smart features and I bought other Nest products (cameras and doorbell). If I wasn't so vested, I'd consider switching.

Incidentally, the last time things "clogged up", I rebooted the APs only, not the main nest router and my issue fixed itself. It is frustrating. I wish I could get a better interface than the mobile app.

Having advanced features would be a good start in the app

Haha funnily enough, so far the most reliable system I’ve had and have kept it too, is my original Google WiFi 2 puck system, it works with all my devices as it should, it’s just by nature not good for 500mbps and up connections.

live tried Ubiquiti, Nest and now Eero Pro 6 and none of them work as well. I’m currently using the Eero and it was a right pain to set up, and then things like You Tube videos would stutter on it, and it doesn’t give my Xbox Series X a IPV6 address, my Google WiFi did though perfectly fine. I guess I’ll try Orbi next? All I really really really want is a nice relatable Google WiFi 6 Mesh system.

I've been having this same issue since early October

two months now
really sucks to have this poor quality on something so expensive

I feel bad that I recommended this back in January to a friend. Hope they aren't experiencing this.

2 weeks now with my Synology RT2600AC and 2 MR2200AC setup to replace my Nest Wifi 2 routers and 2 points.

My switch is plugged into the main router with my 3 NAS drives and sony receiver
My computer is wired into one of the mesh points.

Same setup I had with the Nest routers.

Not one slow down in the last 2 weeks, none of my cameras out at the garage have gone offline or dropped resolution.   I did get slightly higher copy speeds to my NAS from my computer with the Nest setup (up to 74,000kbps vs 54,000 now)  but all of my devices are full speeds and not one slow down and I have had not had to reset the network since setup.

I can see full strength readings and test up and down speed for all mesh points (more easily)

Built in VPN and Threat protection and Safe browsing are a definite plus.

Sold my NEst pucks for $300.

I started receiving some speed stagnating after a couple of days from my last reply. Well, Google Nest, looks like a terrible choice. Perhaps, I'll return it and consider about aero pro or something. I had had an Apple AirPort extreme before I bought this: "Google Nest Wifi", ... had never had issues like this, never, ... ever.

Google is sucks, really!

Well after trying and failing to get the eero pro 6 to work, it is buggy and just doesn't like being setup in pppoe connections, or connect to IPV6 properly, I'm sending it back along with the Nest WiFi and have gone back to my original Google WiFi, by far the best mesh system I've ever used so far... please google release a WiFi 6 based version in 2022?

Did you have Nest Wifi routers only, or add-on points as well?

I first had Google Wifi as well, and was happy with it, until we got 1/1gbps fiber. Then I bought 2x Nest Wifi routers (not add-on points), and they work as reliable as Google Wifi, but faster.

Specs comparison: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/6280668?hl=en

  • Nest Wifi router: AC2200, 4x4 MU-MIMO, 1GB RAM.
  • Add-on point and Google Wifi: AC1200, 2x2 MU-MIMO, 768MB RAM.

I don't work for Google.

I have the original Google WiFi,  have tried twice now two Google Nest routers in a mesh and they work well but for some reason they make my works laptop VPN run slowly, and as I now work from home I need that to work flawlessly. When I have been testing the eero system it worked great with my VPN. I'll give eero support a go before giving up on it.

Interesting. I run Cisco AnyConnect at work, and sometimes Wireguard (through AzireVPN) privately with no problems. Wireless mesh here as well. What VPN product are you using for work?
