iOS app doesn't show router/access point names correctly

Apburke
Community Member

This issue was noted some time ago and then the thread closed.  It still isn’t fixed.  Can you provide and ETA on resolution?

https://support.google.com/googlenest/thread/117069068/ios-app-doesn-t-show-router-access-point-name...

There's a bug on the iOS deployment of Google Home - the names that you give your router/access points do not show correctly in the WiFi section, and instead show generic "Nest Wifi router, Google WiFi Router".

This makes it particularly frustrating when trying to identify which point a device is connected to if you have more than one device of the same type.

It works on the Android deployment on the same home/account/settings, so it's definitely an(other) iOS specific bug.

Hello @Apburke

As an iOS user myself, I feel your pain. Every new release of the Google Home app (including the one that just came out), I rush to see if this bug has been fixed (it hasn't). I also submit feedback to Google from inside the app to report it. Please do the same, so Google knows there are plenty of people still experiencing this issue.

Thanks @MichaelP  I have also fed back through the app and directly with Google and no response and no fix (despite the reference in the earlier thread that was archived that it is a known issue).  I don't understand why it is so hard to resolve to be honest, especially as it isn't an issue in the Android version.

New member but long time user. I’ve been submitting feedback on this exact issue for well over a year. As of last count I’ve submitted about 150 times on this specific topic. It’s bewildering that Google hasn’t resolved it by now.

Thanks @Foggerton  I have done the same.   It seems so simple to fix, so not sure why they haven't done it yet especially when they have recognised it as a bug.   If it isn't simple, why can't Google just tell us so at least we know it isn't being forgotten.

Hi, everyone.

Sorry for the frustrations you're having with the Home app. It can be frustrating when the app causes troubles. With the recent update, were any of you able to see some improvement here?

Also, I noticed that some of you have been using the feedback option to send data to our teams. Thank you for doing that as it helps us more quickly identify issues and resolve them. As more information becomes available on this I'll keep the community updated.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, the google home app for iOS still does not show the name of the access point a device is connected to. It just says “point”. https://imgur.com/a/CjpVS2q

Ironically the old Google WiFi device (which I still have installed) has always had the correct label for the WiFi points when looking at the devices.  I still struggle to understand why this is so hard to fix especially when it worked in the old app.   Do Google even care about fixing this issue?  It makes it very difficult to troubleshoot which they said in the last app update was a key feature.

Hey, Apburke.

I'm still waiting for some additional support on this, but I would like to address the Home app versus WiFi app stuff. The long-term vision for the Home app is to make it a hub for all things in the home. We have a post on our community blog that lays out the vision, found here: https://bit.ly/3un2Nar

That said, we have definitely noted that the transition from WiFi to Home has been a bit bumpy and some features have yet to come across into Home. It's being worked on and updates over time will not only bring parity, but also new features.

I appreciate the challenges with migration @Jeff but my point was this seems so simple and just affecting IOS (it works in Android) that I find it very odd that it can't be fixed easily.  I have no problems with the Home Hub vision, just the fact that this simple bug cannot be resolved for some unknown reason.

Hey, all.

I'm sorry for the issues you're still seeing on the iOS side of things. Thanks elbonds for trying the PC/emulation route. Obviously this is a workaround, not a fix. I'll pass the info along to our teams though as it will give them more to consider and look at.

Thanks.

If the dev team doesn’t already know that this issue is iOS specific, that is very telling. And disappointing.

Hey, Foggerton.

The iOS bug is known internally, but it seems to be a hard one to pin down for a fix as updates to iOS or Home can introduce new wrinkles in the bug squashing process. There are lots of layers that need to be unfolded, but our teams are definitely aware.

Again, I'm sorry it's been a frustrating process. I just hope you can hang in there with us as we work things out.

Thanks.

Jeff,

I have noticed this particular bug ever since I performed the move of my Google WiFi from the Google Wifi app to my Google Home app. That was months ago., with various versions of Home and iOS in between. This is the reason I still use the Google Wifi app, to view which point a device is connected to.

Im failing to see how this is a difficult but to “pin down”. I did a quick simple test with an android emulator. And correct names are displayed in that app. That seems pretty straight forward to me.

Hey, Foggerton.

I haven't seen that confirmed, but I will consult with an internal team and see if that has happened and any more info I can find. There haven't been any official updates in the past few days, however. I'll update soon.

Thanks.

Hey @Jeff  - It was 100% there for about a day. Posts about it in reddit as well. Many of us saw it. And then by the next morning it was gone. Quite the tease.

@Jeff  Once again it is suddenly ‘working’ again. Device info is showing which point it is connected to. Would love to know if this is something being turned on and off for testing purposes, theoretically via cloud control.

I recently switched to iOS and this has been the biggest pain point for me as well unfortunately. Glad to see I’m not the only one with this issue.

This is still an issue. I emulated an Android on my Windows computer, downloaded the Google Home app, and saw that it MAGICALLY displayed the right information. So this is CLEARLY just an iOS app UI issue. It should take 30 seconds for Google to fix.

Agree @elbonds  I also have a Google Pixel phone where this app displays wifi device names perfectly.  I have always said this seems like a simple issue just related to IOS app.   Can't understand why it is so hard or taking so long to fix.

It’s hard to fix bd abuse of things I guess 😩

So what happened? I saw this briefly working yesterday and was ecstatic. And then suddenly it stopped working. Is the functionality being remotely enabled/disabled?

Dang. This is broken again for me as well. I sent feedback from inside the app (again).

@Jeff csn you confirm that a fix was briefly rolled out and then somehow turned off? Can you give an update on what’s going on?

Brianb1217

It’s working!!!!

It did this before then stopped/they turned it off. So we’ll see how this goes.

They probably are just trying to work out possible bugs.

To be honest, it must be a somewhat complicated issue. I doubt that if it was easy, it would be broken for this long. Must be something weird about iOS. But good news is, regardless if this lasts, this being turned on and off shows that they are working on it and it’s not just being ignored.

I’ll take my wins where I can get them lol.

I can also confirm it is working and I missed it the first time around.  Fingers crossed it stays this time.

The back and forth of working/not working is just wild. I'm trying to find some answers for why it might be intermittent. Stuck on working would be great! Thanks for hanging in there, everyone. I am still looking for answers here too.

Hey, Apburke.

It's been a while since the last update. I just wanted to check in and see if your network was still running smoothly or to see if you still needed some help on this. Let me know and I'll be happy to keep helping if needed.

Thanks.

Thanks for following up @Jeff   Yes this seems to be very resolved and working for the past 2 weeks.   Thanks again for your efforts.
