Not receiving Nest lock low battery notifications

46Chris

Only discovered a low battery condition by opening Google Home and seeing that the lock was offline.   This is at a vacation rental property.  Fortunately I was able to get our maintenance guy to replace the batteries.   I read that on the Nest app home screen there's supposed to be a "Security" icon I can click, but my Nest app does not display a security icon.  I am able to receive motion and person alerts from the two Nest cameras.  Just can't find where to set up low battery notifications.

Hi 46Chris,

Thanks for reaching out to us, and I'm sorry to hear about the situation. Let's sort this out.

Does your Nest × Yale Lock shows online on the Nest app? Also, make sure that you are signed in on the Nest app and on the right account. Make sure as well that your phone or tablet’s settings aren’t blocking notifications from the Nest app. Lastly, if you're still having trouble receiving notifications, see if you can receive them on a friend's or relative's smartphone or tablet. Install the Nest app and login in to your account with their consent to see if you may receive notifications on their smartphone. Ensure that you sign out of your account in the Nest app on their smartphone after you're finished.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Zoe

Thank you for following up.  I'm going to include your earlier reply here, and respond in blue & ask a few questions.

Hi 46Chris,    Thanks for reaching out to us, and I'm sorry to hear about the situation. Let's sort this out.     Does your Nest × Yale Lock shows online on the Nest app?  The lock is currently not online, it is at a remote location and I am awaiting a maintenance person to install new batteries.  We had just had the lock go offline, and the maintenance person discovered on removing the battery cover that the inside was full of moisture (photo attached).  That had shortened the battery life.  The inside was dried out, the Nest Connect was checked, new batteries were again installed and within a week the new batteries had died again.  The guests who are staying there insist on keeping the inside temp at 68 degrees.  I believe that with the outside temp being quite warm, one side of the lock is warm and the other side is cold, causing the condensation inside the battery case.  Until these guests leave, I am going to ask the maintenance guy to leave the battery cover off, hoping that will reduce the condensation inside.  We never had this problem last year, but these guests are insisting on keeping the A/C running all the time.  When the lock comes online again (hoping it will) then we can proceed with this notification business.

Also, make sure that you are signed in on the Nest app and on the right account. Make sure as well that your phone or tablet’s settings aren’t blocking notifications from the Nest app.  I am signed into the Nest app, and on the right account.  We also have two Nest cameras on the account, and I am able to receive those notifications just fine.

Before I consider going to this effort, please tell me what it is intended to accomplish?

I have Critical Alerts set up in Google Home and notifications set up for lock & unlock in the Nest app.  It is possible that I have been receiving low battery notifications, but I changed to a new iPhone a month ago and when I went into Nest Notifications on iPhone settings, I saw that they were set as a temporary banner.  I changed them to persistent.

In history, I do see some things I don't understand.  On Friday the 16h there are 17 events.  Many of them were happening all at the same time, lock, unlock, privacy mode turned on and off.  I was not interacting with the lock at all.   And on Sunday the 11th there were 62 events, many of them seeming to occur at the same time.  Sunday the 11th is the day the lock first went offline.  My guess is that the moisture was shorting out the lock and it was just locking and unlocking on its own.  Same, possibly, with Friday the 16th, when the lock went offline for the second time.

I look forward to your insights.

Hello 46Chris,

Thanks for getting back to us with your updates. I’m sorry for the delayed response here. Since you mentioned that there was moisture found inside the device, this may be the root cause of all the issues with the Nest x Yale Lock. To narrow it down, contact Yale support for further assistance.

Reach out if you have other questions in the future.

I appreciate your help, Zoe.

Best,

Lance
