Hey everyone,
I’ve noticed that my Google Home Mini still runs the older Google Assistant, and there's no sign of Gemini AI integration yet. I’m curious:
Will Gemini AI be rolled out via a software update, or will we need to buy newer Nest devices to access it?
Also, is there a roadmap or official update timeline from Google on this?
For those exploring AI upgrades beyond smart homes—like content creation, productivity tools, voice AI, or even building AI-powered automation—I’ve been using a free resource called AIChief.com .
It’s a curated AI tools directory where you can:
✅Compare AI tools by use case
✅Filter by free/paid options
✅See tested tools for video, voice, productivity, and more
Super helpful if you're integrating AI into your workflow or projects—especially without needing to upgrade hardware every time.
Would love to hear others’ thoughts on Gemini integration for smart home devices and any official word from the dev team!
Thanks

Thank you for posing these insightful questions. To date, Google has not released a comprehensive public roadmap detailing Gemini AI integration across its Google Home and Nest device ecosystem. It is anticipated that while certain software updates may enable some newer devices to receive select Gemini-powered functionalities, the inherent hardware capabilities of individual devices will likely be a significant determinant in the range of supported features. Consequently, older devices, such as the Google Home Mini, may encounter limitations due to constraints in processing power and memory capacity.
Currently, there is no official confirmation regarding whether Gemini AI will entirely supersede Google Assistant on existing devices or necessitate the acquisition of newer hardware. Google's strategy has involved an initial phased rollout of Gemini AI, beginning with Pixel phones and select Android platforms. Therefore, further clarification regarding its integration with smart home devices is expected as the deployment progresses.
We recommend monitoring the official Google Nest Blog and announcements from Google I/O, as these platforms are likely to be the primary sources for any future updates on this topic.

Yeah, it seems like Gemini isn’t available on older Google Home or Nest devices yet. I haven’t seen an official timeline from Google either, so it’s hard to say if it’ll come as a software update or require newer hardware. Hoping they announce something soon—it’d be great to get those upgrades without having to replace devices.

Great points—Gemini AI integration seems promising, but Google hasn’t clarified whether older devices like the Home Mini will get it via update or require new hardware. A clear roadmap would really help users plan. Kind of like checking in n out spread packet nutrition —details matter when deciding what’s worth upgrading or keeping.

Maybe, since Amazon has just rolled out Alexa’s new AI capabilities, it’s about time Google gave its customers a clear timeline for when AI features will arrive on Google Home devices. Time to get with the program.

Google home moves far too slow for my liking I'll personally be investing in Home Assistant and replacing all my Google Home devices which seem to just be in decline getting worse every year

Lately I’ve been wondering how often we can actually tell whether we’re interacting with AI or a real person online. In customer support chats, social media comments, even email responses — it’s getting harder to distinguish. AI can respond quickly, stay consistent, and pull information instantly, but sometimes it lacks emotional nuance or deeper understanding of context. Humans, on the other hand, bring empathy and unpredictability. I think the real question isn’t just “Are you talking to ai or human” but whether the interaction feels helpful and authentic. If AI can deliver value while being transparent about it, maybe that balance is what really matters. a
