Ask it to stream BBC radio 4 although it shows this is what it heard it streams BBC radio 1

Request the hub to play BBC radio 4 in the morning before I have had my first coffee, it replies "streaming BBC radio 1" this leads to an argument between me asking for radio 4 in various different ways sometimes I win. Sometimes I stream it from my phone. It feels like Google just think it is amusing to annoy me. Is there a fix or do I continue to fight with what was once an excellent and obedient servant, lose my **bleep** throw it to the ground, stamp on it and get the DAB radio out of storage?

Hi Ana,

Thank you for your reply.

I can cast from my phone (pixel 7) without an issue. I can ask the hub to play other stations without an issue. The problem started probably about 3 weeks ago?

I have found asking the hub to play, rather than stream Radio 4 is , so far, more successful. I can't understand why it would display exactly what I ask for and then play something else.

I will look into the links you provided and hopefully find a solution.

Meanwhile, thanks for getting in touch.

I have the same issue. Ask for radio 4, the display shows it has interpreted this correctly then it says "playing radio 1". Ahhhhg

About 1/4 attempts it plays radio 4 so it is just a case of repeating the command until it works. Strange bug though

Hi, @Emptynesternot,

Thank you so much for reaching out to the community. I’m truly sorry the incorrect radio service is playing. I’m happy to help!

Please let me know if you attempted the troubleshooting steps in my previous post so that I can help you more effectively.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

I don't think your suggestions are useful. The problem started in the last few months. Something on Google's end is deciding to play radio 1 even when the device does correct NLP. There are various decision Google takes to optimize revenue share. E.g., when requesting a track from Spotify it will usually select a live performance track as that is cheaper for Spotify. Presumably you have cut a deal with them. So your revenue optimizer is inadvertently playing Radio 1 even though the device knows I requested 4. I doubt BBC is paying you for this but who knows?

Hi, @Emptynesternot,

I appreciate your quick reply. I apologize sincerely for any inconvenience this issue has caused you over the past two months. With pleasure, I will help you more.

Considering that you mentioned that this issue only began a few months ago. I’d suggest you try unlinking and relinking your radio service, and then reboot your display

If the problem still persists, I would greatly appreciate it if you could share your feedback about this inconvenience. Your opinion is valuable to us as we strive to enhance Google Assistant services.

Feel free to reply if you have any questions.

Regards,

I've had the same problem which is extremely irritating. It started a few months ago and after repeated attempts, it does play correctly (i.e. the station requested, radio 4) but one of my  mini speakers has now failed completely and does  not respond to any commands.

Hi, @NickinWilts,

Thank you so much for reaching out to the community. I’m truly sorry the Home Mini is not responding to any commands. I’m happy to help you and find a solution.

Regarding the trouble you're having with the radio service, could you please let me know if you've tried following the instructions in my earlier posts? I would greatly appreciate it if you could share your feedback about this inconvenience. Your opinion is valuable to us as we strive to enhance Google Assistant services.

To effectively troubleshoot your Home Mini, please provide the following information:

  • Does the Home Mini never respond to the hotword, or does it only respond sometimes?
  • How long did the device work as intended before you experienced this symptom?
  • How often does this happen?
  • Where is the device placed? Examples: Is the device by itself, up against the wall, next to a TV or audio speaker, next to a microwave?
  • Is there anything that covers the device? (Example: if the speaker is decorated with stickers).

In the meantime, please ensure the following:

  • Ensure the device is powered by the provided power cord and is plugged directly into a power outlet.
  • Verify the Home Mini is not muted.

If, after checking that, the Home Mini is still not responding, please reboot the Home Mini and try to say a command.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana

This problem seems to come and go. I found I could make it behave by spelling out.

Eg "OK google play BBC radio F O U R"

Works every time for me.

This only works intermittently for me, so infuriating.

Google make me listen to BBC radio 1 is a crime against my ears

The solution is to spell out the word four. For some reason the monetization algorithm is playing Radio 1 when your ask for "radio four" but if you ask for " "radio eff oh you are" it will play Radio 4 correctly. AI is a black box so probably even Google don't know why.

Sadly this only worked for a short time for me.

but the Machine did okay Radio 4 for approximately 4 or 5 days, almost back to normal.

but then yesterday evening mine went mental again,  bloody awful bbc radio 1 every time today

Thanks for your reply.  Spelling the word "four" send to work for me but it's pretty dammed annoying.  Overall,  I find it's functionality really poor.

I too have the same issue. Needs to be resolved by Google as its a royal pain in the backside

Saying eff oh you are today and it still played Radio 1. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Hi Folks,

It is so good to find that I am not alone. I have found that I can reduce the number of errors by asking google to "play radio...Four" Pause and say 4 slowly and as clearly as possible.

This has resulted in a 1 in 3 success rate!  It can also result in BBC Radio 1 dance sometimes which basically puts me in fight or flight mode!

Good luck all. I look forward to the update that fixes this issue and gives the hub it's brain back!

Oh and if the voice recognition bit can prevent my 6 year old from playing "dance monkey" because google thinks they are me that would be the icing on the cake!
