Assistant no longer stops playing after a specified period

HandyOrcs
Community Member

Recently my Home Mini speaker does not seem to be able to stop playing after a specified time.

I usually play music when going to bed by saying "Hey Google, play sleep music for one hour" and it will reply that it is playing a Spotify playlist called sleep, and the bedroom speaker will stop playing in one hour... and then it plays all night.

It doesn't matter if I issue a single command or start playing and then give a second command to stop playing in one hour - it still plays all night unless I explicitly stop it again.

It used to work fine and stop playing after the specified duration until probably a couple of weeks ago.

I had the same problem. You have to add action, delay start, after 30 min, stop speaker.

I have looked in settings for help. I have reset the lenova clock back to factory settings .

The timers work-on both devices just not when using the radio

I have the same problem which started around 10 days ago. I bought a second nest thinking it may be my device but it has exactly the same problem.

I am having this problem too. I listen to the radio every night when I go to bed and get it to turn off after one or two hours, now it just plays continuously using up my data.  It has only just started.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for reaching out. Could you please provide the commands that you have tried as well as the exact response of the Google Nest speakers so we can take a closer look into this?

Best,

Princess

Me:  Hey Google - play NewsTalk ZB for 3 hours

Google:  streaming NewsTalk ZB from iHeart Radio. Bedroom clock will stop playing in 3 hours

It has been working well for the last 3 years but now won’t turn off after the time. Keeps going until I tell it to stop.

Hi Princesss

I say. Hey google play2gb for 25 minutes.
Google then comes back saying: playing 2 gb. Bed 1 clock will turn off in 25 minutes.

Trouble is it plays 2 gb but never turns off. I have also tried  it on our google nest & that also did not turn off either. I use the same command on both. Up to about 2 - 3 weeks ago it always worked.
Thank you for taking an interest in this problem.

I listen to a radio station at night to fall asleep.   I have tried telling Google to stop playing in XX minutes,  or at a specific time.   Either command is acknowledged,  and repeated " Google will stop playing in XX minutes ".  However,  it never does.

I have a routine that switches of the light and plays rain sounds. It used to play for one hour. Suddenly it plays all night.

Oké I don't use the routine anymore and tell the mini to play rain sounds for one hour. It works fine... untill recently, now it will play all night.

What command can I give the mini so it will play the sound for one hour (or two). I have tried many commands in Dutch and English. No succes!

I have the same problem. I tried with "Play sleep sounds for 30 minutes", or with a combination of two commands: "Play sleep sounds" followed by "Set a sleep timer for 30 minutes". No success. It does not stop playing. When I say "Set a sleep timer for 30 minutes" Google Home replies with "Google Home will stop playing in 30 minutes". But then if I ask "How much time left on sleep timer" it says there is no sleep timer configured.
This feature used to work but starting a month ago or so, it stopped working. It continues to play until I explicitly say "Stop".

Unfortunately there is no solution to this. This bug appeared a couple of weeks ago and google are aware of it and a fix is awaited. The nearest thing that can be done is not a solution so not perfect but a kind of temporary workaround as follows.

Create a Routine on the Google Home app with a single action command of 'Stop Playing'. Additionally create a starter on the routine for when you want the routine to action of a set time of day, e.g. for instance at 23:00 or of course whatever time would be more suitable. Then the music or sleep sounds will stop when the routine activates at that set time every day or night. Not perfect but the best you can do until this bug is fixed.

My google mini won’t stop playing music on timer. I usually set music to play for an hour and turn off when going to bed. The command I use is “Hey google, in 1 hour stop playing music” it always worked for years but a few a days ago it stopped turning off the music. It will acknowledge the command and say it will stop playing in 1 hour but doesn’t do it. I have tried rebooting the unit with no success.

I have the same problem with all my Google mini’s (3) it started not turning off after a given time whatever command was given, including the usual one listed above.  I have tried everything to have that facility, as I suffer from tinnitus and it is a great help in getting to sleep,   HELP PLEASE

I tried both unplugging and rebooting using the app with no improvement in performance.

I have the same problem. I've done everything and the music does not stop. It repeats the command and says it will stop at the command time ie- will stop in 30 min but doesn't stop at all. It was working fine. Not now.

Same problem here despite rebooting. Has anyone found a resolution yet?

Hi Juni, you recently posted the following on the main thread to the sleep timer issue: '

Hi there,   I just wanted to follow up to see if you still need our help. Please let us know as we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.   Thanks, Juni'

However, the thread is read only, so no-one can 'let you know'. I still have the sleep timer issue on all 3 of my Nest Hubs 1st & 2nd gen. Thanks

I do use the sleep time almost every night, usually tell Google to turn off the music in 10 min. Since the beginning of Google Home products era this has always worked 99.9% of the time. Occasionally it would stop immediately.

Now however ALL MY SPEAKERS now using sleep timer or not will randomly turn on again after stopping. The time is also random in that it IS NOT the same as a previously used sleep timer say 10 min. The speakers may come on in a min or so, 5 min or  maybe longer. It is random and creepy.

The other odd thing is saying Google Stop does not usually stop on the first try. I need to say it multiple times.

Hi folks,

I know it hasn't been easy for you especially when the sleep timer feature has been very useful for your daily schedule. It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first to refresh the link between your devices and your Wi-Fi. Unplug the power cord from your router followed by your Nest speakers and plug them back in starting with your router. Restarting the phone where your Google Home app should also do it.

Keep us posted.

Dan

Hi Dan, tried your fix to no avail.  I've also noticed when I ask my Google device anything,  I seem to be getting a delayed response.   I am using a Google mesh remote device.

Any further advice sure would be appreciated!

same issue, started happening a few weeks ago. I used to say 'hey google play music for 1 hour' and it always worked until 2 weeks ago. now it just keep playing music the whole night. Such a shame. asking to play something with a timer it's the feature I use most. Even routines are not working. usually when I say 'Hey google, I'm going out'  it used to stop whatever music it's playing at moment and that's not happening anymore either.
