Continued conversation mode does not work on any of 12 devices.

I have 12 Google home nest devices. A mix of hub displays, nest minis, and nest audio speakers. Conversation mode or continued conversation used to work on all of them. Now it doesn't work anymore. I have rebooted my entire system more than once. I have rebooted my router, my Wi-Fi points, and all the devices. It's enabled in my assistant app and I've also redone the voice match. Can't seem to get conversation mode back again. Any help would be appreciated!

I guarantee Google couldn't give a **bleep** about it. This bug has been going on for the past couple years on and off. I've never seen a company so incompetent that they fix the bug and then a month later it comes back.

Hi all,

Thanks for reaching out to the community forum. I'm sorry to hear that the Continued Conversation feature has suddenly stopped working on all of your Google Speakers and Displays. I understand how concerning this may be, especially since it had been working without any issues. I appreciate the detailed information you've shared and the time you've already taken to troubleshoot. Don't worry; let's work together to resolve this issue.

Let's try the following steps:

Please keep me updated on how it goes.

Jonathan

First of all, I'd like to thank you for responding, and the advice given. However, I don't want to be rude or ungrateful, but I'm not sure it will do any good.

The first item you suggested was to check the firmware and make sure it's updated. Even if i find the  version, which I did, how do I know whether it's updated. That is, what version should it be? I didn't know how to do that so I researched it on Google. I was led to believe it is automatic - no manual updates are necessary, or allowed. So how can I do what you asked? Isn't it always updated, automatically?

Secondly, you asked me to factory reset my devices. Did you notice that I have 12 devices? I have 6 minis, 3 hub displays, 2 Nest audio speakers and an original nest home speaker. It would be difficult to factory reset every one of these, with the chance it won't make a difference. Every single one of these worked up until a few weeks ago, or so. How will factory resetting all of them make a difference? Shouldn't there be one thing in common that is preventing my Continued Conversation mode from working?

Having said that, I went ahead and factory reset 3 of the devices - 1 Nest Audio Speaker, 1 Mini, and one Nest Hub. Unsurprisingly, it made no difference. The Continue Conversation mode still does not work.

Again, thanks for the input and trying, but do you have any follow-on suggestions?

Thanks,

Jim

Hi @Jimadmz,

Thanks for your update. I appreciate that you've already factory reset some of your Google Speakers and Displays. I understand how difficult it must be to factory reset all of them, especially since trying it with some of your devices didn't resolve the continued conversation issue. To better support you, please answer the following questions:

  • Can you tell me the firmware version of your Google Speakers and Displays? Please use the following article to check the firmware versions: Google speaker and display firmware versions and release notes.
  • What was the question you asked the Google Assistant using your Google Speakers and Displays?
  • What was the follow-up question you asked?
  • How long after the first question did you ask the follow-up question?
  • What is the version of the Google Home app?

Please let me know the answer to these questions.

Regards,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

Oops - sorry I missed your reply. It came in via email and I must have overlooked it.

It will take me a little while to draft a response with the info requested. I'll do it as soon as I can. Additionally, I have been doing some other troubleshooting on my own. I'll let you know what I've done and the results.

Thanks again,

Jim

Jonathan,

Again, thanks for looking  into my case. As I indicated, I've done some troubleshooting on my own and have some updates. Just to be sure, I checked the Home app (version: 3.39.51.1) and all my devices have Voice Match on and Continued Conversation selected. Additionally, I've recently updated my voice match. You asked how long after the 1st question before asking the follow-up. I've been using this mode for quite some time and am familiar with it. I know there is a brief window after the initial question when a follow up can be asked. This is indicated on all the speakers with their lights on/flashing to show the mode is available. It is indicated on the displays with small dots in the upper left side of the screen to show it's available. So as for time, I'd say only a second or two. I know if the indication goes away, I missed the window and must use the wakeup words again. This is what stopped working and what I was writing about. Originally when it failed a few weeks ago, it didn't work on any device, no matter what the question asked, at least not that I noticed. Now it is working - partially. I will explain below under 'New Info'.

New Info:

My oldest speaker - an original Google Home Speaker now works in the Continued Conversation mode. As I said, I have 12 devices, so I'm not sure if I originally checked it or not, but in any case it now works. Any question I ask and then do a follow up within the correct amount of time, now works fine.

As for the other devices, the mode now works, but only for some questions - two types of questions that I've found so far. This is where it gets crazier!  The two types are Streaming Music/play a particular radio station and a personal question, such as what's on my calendar, or what's on my shopping list.

For instance, if I ask it to stream music, such as "Play XXXX radio" it does it, then the continued conversation mode stays active. I can then ask it to play another radio station/stream music or ask a personal question and it keeps working.  It does this as long as I keep asking for music or personal questions. As soon as I switch the topic, such as "What time is it?" or "What's the weather today?", it closes the continued conversation window and no further question can be asked without using the wakeup words again.

Conversely, if I ask any other type of question, other than the two mentioned, the mode will not work. For example, if I ask what's the weather like today, it will answer, but that's it - no continued conversation. Previously I could follow up with something like how about tomorrow, or how about Thursday, and it would continue and answer. Now it does not. I've tried various other questions and again, except the two mentioned, the mode still does not work.

I know this is a lot, but hope it helps with your research on the problem. Additionally, as you've asked, I'm including all the firmware versions below.

Thanks again for your help and let me know if there's anything else you need or what can be done.

Jim

this isn't a user issue this is a Google side issue so we can stop with all the basic troubleshooting cuz none of that crap works.

@sicsacol  Is  Continued Conversation feature available on Nest display in Nigeria? Thank you.

Continue conversation was fixed last year and now it's broken again. Google is known for fixing bugs and having them regress in a later update it's just how they roll. The whole ecosystem is trash and full of bugs that Google refuses to fix. Set up home assistant or make the switch to Amazon Alexa that's the only way to get a decent smart home system. All that factory resetting this and turning this all doesn't do a **bleep** thing. This is a Google side issue. They will continue to tell you to do all this stupid basic trouble shooting stuff that they know is not going to work. This is the third time that continued conversation has stopped working. This company is a freaking joke. My nest hub went into the garbage yesterday because he can't even do the **bleep**ing basic **bleep** of telling me when to get up in the morning because the alarm stopped working LOL. I was late for work two days in a row and I can't trust Google's crappy smart home hub to do basic functionality that alarm clocks have been doing for years.

Yeah that is wild for this entire feature to go completely out and no mention of it, a fix for it, or when it might be resolved. It also seems that the chaining of multiple commands ("and" commands) was simultaneously broken along with continued conversation.

The whole ecosystem is complete and utter trash. Still broken.

Just wanted to add to this conversation that I am also experiencing the lack of continued conversation on all my nest speakers.    I want to say it started about a month ago.

I've also tried rebooting them and factory reset one of them but still no continue conversation even though the setting is turned on, via Google home app, for the device.
