Could not connect to your Google home mini

seanhemm
Community Member

Trying to set up new Google Home Mini. Go through Google Home App and it says I must download Device Utility App to set up. I do that, follow all prompts in Device Utility App, and it finds the Google Home Mini. However, as soon as I try to connect, I get the error message "Could not connect to your Google Home mini. Make sure it is nearby and that you connect to it when prompted". I am sitting right next to the speaker, and it never prompts me. Literally as soon as I click to connect to it, I get the error message.

I have the exact same issue. My phone connects to the Nest mini, but immediately upon trying to have it connect to the internet, the message, "Could not connect Nest mini to internet."

I did everything mentioned in Help. Nothing works.

Can anyone help?

I'm having the exact same issue.  Any advice?

Sorry, still haven't gotten it to work. I thought Google would chime in, but nothing yet.

The last 'when you go to' is an editing error, please ignore.

This solution worked for me. It is counterintuitive though, because the device utility app specifically makes you turn OFF Wifi when you open it!  Once you get past that and start looking for a device, that's when I enabled airplane mode and turned ON Wifi, resulting in a good connection.

THIS finally worked for me.  Once utility app has you turn off wifi, continue and when it starts searching, turn ON wifi.  Go figure...

It works!! After getting the prompt 'Would you like to set up this device?' I turned on airplane mode, turned on wifi, and turned on Bluetooth, then clicked 'next' on the utility app. Connected right away!

I had the same issue. To fix it, I factory reset my Google Home and then went through the entire set up process again.

These steps did not work for me:

  • Resetting my Google home mini
  • Going to airplane mode and then selectively enabling network when connecting through d vice utility app

What actually did work for me:

Using an older version of Android device - I had an old Nexus 7 tab, which had an older version of Android (And I presume an older version of Home app). I tried adding my Home mini using that and it never prompted me to install device utility app, sailed through the setup smoothly.

While this solution may not work for everyone, but could probably be helpful if there is an older Android device lying around somewhere!

Hey folks,

Thanks for bringing this up, and apologies for the delayed response. I know how excited you are to be able to set up your Google Home Mini. Let me help you with your concern.  A few questions - when did the issue start? How far are you from your Home Mini during set up? Are you using a dual-band router?

Thanks for posting, and sorry for the delay.

  1. Make sure that mobile data is off.
  2. Move your Home Mini within 15-20 ft. away from the router to get enough signal from your network.
  3. Reboot your Home Mini and router by disconnecting them from the power source and leave them unplugged for 1 minute. Once done, plug them back one at a time with intervals.
  4. Turn WiFi on and off on the mobile setup device.
  5. Try to use a different phone and see if you will have the same issue.
  6. If it is still the same, factory reset your device.

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers,
