Favorite radio station suddenly won't play - Melbourne Australia

Robbo9
Community Member

Have been listening to Triple M FM Melbourne for a year with out issue.  Suddenly today it plays a different station from what I'm asking for.  After a little investigating, I find that radio stations that are linked to either iHeart and Tunein are being played, but nothing via the Listnr app.  Has the Listnr app been dropped.

"Help" pages instruct to arrange your radio requirements via    Media>Manage your system>Radio (button)   But there is no Radio button (Only Music, Video, Podcast or Create Groups)

No matter what I request, the google voice response is it is not available right now. I can see the usual screens and connect to the Internet. But, streaming Audio seems to have disappeared. I tried it individually also on any of the Nest Speakers as well. Nothing. I rebooted, but still no joy.

YEP not here in NY either.

Same in Ann Arbor, MI. Was always able to say “Play Michigan Radio” and it would play my local NPR station. I say it now and the Nest doesn’t understand what I want and gives me web links to Michigan Radio.

"I looked for WFAN radio, but it either isn't available or can't be played right now." is the response for all stations.

Quit working last night for me.  Was hoping it was temporary but no iheartradio stations this morning either.  I have tried several and none can be found.

Same in NJ. And the option to add either Sirius or Audacy in the app has completely disappeared. I really hope this os a Google outage and not a decision to no longer make these services available!

Same here…no SiriusXM or iHeartRadio 🙁

Google broken again, what more can we expect from them

This happened to me yesterday - I used to say hey google stream XXXX on SiriusXM and it would start playing right away and now it does not.  Ugh - can't figure out what is going on!

Adding another experience to the list - lost access to streaming audio this morning (4/12/23) as well. Have tried rebooting all my devices, restarting my WiFi network, asking devices to forget the network. Everything appears to be connected. I am able to cast from my phone, i.e. "Hey Google, play [musical artist or podcast]" and it will stream via Spotify. Given that I use these devices primarily as a radio, I hope this is a temporary issue!

i know this is a "fix," but i am not wasting my phone battery for this. i also use my phone all day for work. having 4 minis and two google nest displays almost be utterly worthless except for spotify is really annoying

Information provided by support:

The team is already aware of it. Engineers are already investigating and are working on a fix. We don't have any news yet to share, but we'll reach out to you as soon as we get an update. For now, kindly send feedback on one of your speakers so engineers can review the device logs. Turn on send data usage and crash reports in the Google Home app, then command this speaker to "Send feedback."

Hi All,

I got frustrated enough to call Google and sit on hold for 30 minutes.  What I learned is, this is a system wide issue around the globe.  While it started in the UK, no country has been spared and they are working on a fix.  They have no timeline as to when this will be completed.  Hopefully this post helps others and keeps them from rebooting their mini as many times as I did.

Good luck!

ugh 😞 thanks for the update

i still think it's the ai! the robots are fighting back! 😁

Thank you for taking the time to reach out to Google 😀

Thanks for the reply. It started working today too. Not sure how/why, but it did.

Also, I noticed that SiriusXM is not listed in the "Works with Google" app list.  I wonder if anyone else noticed that?

nope, but it's definitely having trouble with sirus. i posted in the forum too. on monday, it started calling howard 100, howard 1 oh oh, and now it can't find it. radio stations are offline too.

I used to be able to use the command "play 80s on 8" but now I have to say the command "play Channel 8 on Sirius XM"

"I used to be able to use the command "play 80s on 8" but now I have to say the command "play Channel 8 on Sirius XM""

Here's how whacked it is now, when you now have to say "play Channel 8 on Sirius XM", Google Assistant replies, "Okay, playing 80's on 8".

You should be insulted with that answer.

Yeah, that seemed to be a workaround for Sirius, like channel 100 on siriusxm, rather than Howard 100. 😞

Unfortunately the other three stations I listen to on iHeart Radio are completely non-existent since this recent Google screw-up.

yep. no radio stations. 😞

NO RADIO since this weekend!!

The FINAL STRAW from ADHD Google, who creates technology and then like a 10 year old gets bored with it and ignores it. If this isn't remedied in 24 hours, my Google Assistant Mini goes in the Garbage Can! I WILL NEVER buy ANYTHING with the Google name on it!

i'm starting to like my alexa more and more. 😞

I have both, Alexa is FAR Dumber than the "Hey Google", I get "I don't know how to do that" 10 times more from Alexa than Hey Google. Both have "error rates" in excess of 60%, Alexa usually 80% (but at least it once in a while plays the right radio stations I ask for). The truth is that they are both good for Sh*t. If either was a real human "Assistant", I'd fire them by the end of their first day on the job.

Google doesn't seem to have got the message that RELIABILITY is paramount with these devices. It's no use adding extra features when the basics (such as playing a radio station it has played many times before) so often stop working. My guess is that the whole system needs to be streamlined and simplified but, in the meantime, please give us some method of accessing useful logs that show where something failed, and a "known issues" page with current status. I've just seen a post about playing radio that said "The issue has been mitigated and all radio stations are back online." This clearly is not true as, following a reboot, two of my devices (I haven't yet tried the others) still give the same "I don't know..." response.

Thanks for the reply. It started working today. Not sure how/why, but it did. Good luck to you.

Same here, as of 04/11/23 iHeart Radio and all their wonderful radio channels that I have listened to for the last several years on my Google Home system with Nest speakers no longer works.  For that matter the same with Sirius XM channels, and some Spotify Channels too.

Now the response that Google Assistant returns when you ask to stream your music, and/or radio channels is the same ridiculous.....  "I looked for (insert your music or channel name) and it either isn't available or can't be played right now".

Does anybody at Google know if this problem will get elevated to the point of someone or some team actually fixing this issue, or will the overall quality and experience of using the "Google Home System with Nest" just continue to degrade get worse and worse?   (Seems to be the trend from Google starting with the volume control issue for Nest Speakers that Google never provided a work-around for that originated back in Dec of 2021 and continues to this day)

And this IDIOT company (Google) wants to create AI???  Can you Imagine just how F'ed Up they'd make that??? It would probably suddenly disable everyone's Tesla EV , Turn off your Refrigerator, Turn Off the Power to your House and Business, Make your Android Tablet or Chromebook Explode, turn your Nest Thermostat up to 125 Degrees in August, turn off your Ring Door Camera, Unlock Your Front Door and open it to let Looters in!  Good thing Google doesn't make a Bidet! What a death that would be.

shhhhh. i think that it may be that the ai has already gotten into the system. i think the robots are fighting back! 😆

Thanks for the update. Frustrating that Google just doesn't own up to it and publish on line that they have a problem and are working on it.
