Fuchsia killed casting from LOCAL devices

A few years ago I bought the first Google Hub (Gen 1) (before the Nest Hub Max was introduced). I use a program on my android phone with the name "dream Player". With this app I can connect to my ENIGMA based SAT/cable receiver and watch live TV on my phone.  Also an option to use CHROMECAST is available. So with this combination I can watch LIVE TV on a NEST DISPLAY. As internal player in that "dream player" app VLC is. So to try this problem yourself, just install VLC on your pone and try to stream a local file to a NEST display.

THis has been working fine, until I got FUCHSIA on the Gen 1. I already had a NEST HUB MAX on on that device it was still working fine. So I bought an extra NEST HUB MAX to replace the GEN 1 in the KITCHEN.

Until last week I suddenly received FUCHSIA on my first NEST HUB MAX (developer option is on). And again, from that moment on I can't chromecast local content anymore. So is it possible that this problem now is going to be fixed, before my third NEST HOME MAX is infected with FUCHSIA and I loose on all devices the option to watch live TV. Or is there an valid option to block any further upgrades from my device?

Hey rai,

Sorry to hear about your experience, but thanks for bringing this up. To confirm, have you checked with "Dream Player" if they still support casting on a third-party device like the Google Nest Hub and Hub Max? Also, is the issue isolated on this app only?

Cheers,

Muddi

Yes I have been in contact with them months ago. And they told me that they are just using the standard VLC library to make this happen. And indeed, on my Nest hub Max with still the old OS on it, it is working perfect.

But it is very easy to test (and not related to that DREAMPLAYER app only). If you take an ANDROID phone and install the VLC app (or even the MX player app) and try to CHROMECAST a video file that is locally stored on your phone, it is not working anymore if your device is upgraded with FUCHSIA. any other devices in your house that are chromecast capable will work fine. Only devices with FUCHSIA can't do it anymore.

In my case it is about VLC, but as mentioned, also MXPLAYER is not able to work anymore. So maybe other video players that are able to chromecast local content, might have the same problem. Only CHROMECAST tha tis still working, is if the content is coming from a source that is located on the internet (like NETFLIX, YOUTUBE, etc).

Hi rai,

Thanks for the details you've shared. Could you please tell us what are the videos you're trying to play? Do you get any prompts on the Nest Hub after you try to play a video? Lastly, does it work when you manually cast a video using your phone?

Best,

Princess

THe main goal is that I can watch live TV in my kitchen on the Nest Hub Max. But for this test the setup is as follows:

2 times a NEST HUB MAX.
1 telephone with ANDROID on it.
On that phone just a normal VIDEO file taken with the INTERNAL CAMERA of the device. For this test, the resolution of the file is just standard HD (1920*1080).
Application is VLC.

On the NEST HUB MAX tha tis working fine, the following software version is on it:

About device
DEVICE NAME
Kitchen display
SOFTWARE VERSION
45.3.10.415344900
CAST FIRMWARE VERSION
1.56.295071
On the NEST HUB MAX that was always working fine, but now after the FUCHSIA upgrade not anymore, the version is:

 About device
DEVICE NAME
Living Room display
FUCHSIA VERSION
6.20211109.1.3166243
SOFTWARE VERSION
45.1.15.450549110
CAST FIRMWARE VERSION
1.60.311339

If I now start the VLC application, select this camera file it is displaying the video on the android phone. If I then select the CAST ICON inside VLC and select the "KITCHEN DISPLAY", I see the expected video displayed on the NEST HUB MAX in the kitchen.

If I do the same action, but select the LIVING ROOM DISPLAY, then the phone is connecting, but the phone keeps spinning the VLC icon forever until the NEST HUB MAX is disconnecting the phone after about 30 sec. But no video is displayed on the MAX.

If I do this same action to the old GEN 1 GOOGLE HUB (also now with FUCHSIA), same problem as on the MAX with FUCHSIA.

@Jake  Thanks for the to that form. I will start filling it. And in the meantime, Google also destroid my last working device. So a the moment none of them is able to use local casting anymore. It is still strange that if you buy a device for some functionality, that you are not able to block any updates, like you can do an any phone, TV, etc.

I can confirm that my casting has also broke since the Fuchsia Update about 2 weeks.

I performed a factory reset, did not resolve the issue. Rebooting it solves the issue a for a bit, but after a few casts, it goes to bein broken  again. It does not play media from local devices, does not even play music from free services (YouTube Music) and paid services.

Just says, "Ok, here you go, music from youtube music"....black screen

Casting from youtube on my phone....just does a  the "cling......black screen.....do peee do" ...and nothing.

I have posted in other forums about this:

@Jake @Princesss How do I formally submit a bug?
