Google Assiatant has stopped responding to all voice commands

Hi. Hoping someone can help. My Google Home (1st Gen) has never had any issues before. A couple of days ago it stopped responding to all voice commands. The unit recognises the "Hey Google" command with sound and visual acknowledgement but will not respond. No error messages are delivered. All other features work fine. I can cast audio, all lights working, adjust volume, etc, but the Google Assistant will just not respond. I have powered off/on, done a factory reset, ensured the mic is on and clear of debris, and worked through all troubleshooting steps I can see. I have checked the logs in the Home App>Settings>Privacy>Home Activity, but no voice commands I try are logged. Not sure if this is related to firmware 2.57.375114 which was released a few days ago or related to another issue. Hoping someone can suggest some other steps I could take to try to restore full functionality. Thanks.

Mine also stopped working yesterday. It has done this once before but a factory reset and re-setup cured it last time but this time it is making no difference. Like yours, I can cast to it ok and it recognises OK Google but it doesn't carry out the command.

Hey folks,

My apologies for the late response. I know how challenging it is when your Google Home device is not responding to your commands. To further isolate the issue, please try setting up your device on a different network, like a mobile hotspot. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one to serve as a router and the other to be used to set up your Google Home device). You can also try using a different account to see if your device will have the same behavior.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi Muddi.

I did as you asked but unfortunately reinstalling it on another WiFi made no difference. It installs fine but when you say "ok google" it reacts but gives no response

Hi Muddi. Thanks for attempting to provide a solution to this issue. I completed another factory reset of the device and added it to a new wi-fi network (using a mobile hotspot). Unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue. This is in line with the findings of JediTony.

When I ask my speaker a question nothing happens. The lights come on when I say hey Google. But then nothing they just go out. I have done a factory reset and still nothing.  This only started yesterday. Can anyone help please?

There must be some problem with the firmware of the device. I have the same problem and if you look at older but recent posts, many cases have been reported with the same problem.

I have looked and rebooted and reset my speaker and no option to update my firmware. So I have a speaker that doesn't work

Hello ShponderMan,

Thanks for responding. Could you please provide the cast firmware version of your Google Nest speakers?

To check which firmware version you're on, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings and then Device information.
  4. Under "Technical information," check for Cast firmware: "X.XXX.XXXXX." If the device is on Fuchsia, check for System firmware version: "X.XXXXXXXX.X.XXXXXXX"

Check the version on your Nest display

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the display screen.
  2. Tap Settings and then About device. You should find your "Cast firmware version."
    • For Nest Hub (1st gen) and Nest Hub Max: If “Fuchsia Version” is also listed, this means your device runs Fuchsia.

Best,

Princess

Ok more confused, as according to ypur list my speaker's firmware is up to date. But it still will not answer queries

Hello everyone,

Thanks for all the info you've shared. Have you already performed a complete reset and attempt to set it up using a different network? if you have a different network where you can set it up, that would be much better. If not, I suggest you to try using mobile hotspot temporarily so we can isolate the issue further.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

Princess

I can confirm that I have reset the affected device, and tried setting it up on a different network. Exactly the same result.

It might be relevant that I have multiple Google Home devices, and only one is affected in this way, the others are all working as expected. All of the devices (both the ones working fine and the one with this issue) are running exactly the same firmware version. The one affected device is by far the oldest.

I am facing the exact same issue and it's worth noting that it's a very old Google Home speaker that is affected (purchased in 2018).

Mine is doing the same. Will connect and play Bluetooth, if set up in the app but it won’t respond to any voice commands.

Hello ! Cast firmware is : 2.57.375114

System firmware version is: 375114

Best, Princess

I have same problem . Rebooting and reconnecting has no effect. In my opinion, this happened after the September 2023 Google app update for Android

Hello everyone,

Thanks for bringing this up.

We're sorry to hear that some of you is experiencing this with your Google Nest speakers. Since most of you already performed a complete reset, here's some info about the device's latest firmware updates.

Please take note that updates are sent over the air as long as your devices are plugged in and connected to a stable Wi-Fi network.

Let us know if you have additional questions and we'd be happy to help.

Best,

Princess

Thanks for the advice. performed a full reset - it did not help!

Yes, it doesn't work for us, we have to wait for them to update the firmware automatically from Google. The same thing is happening to many people.

Same! You had one job!

Annoying! Hopefully it won't be too long before it's fixed!

I'm the same spent ages trying resets and stuff. So what your saying is just have to wait and it will be majically updated remotly and just start working again? Is that a day a week a month a year????

I have had the Google Home 1 generation for years, I never had this problem, that is what I hope that Google makes an update to solve the problem, from several posts that there are more in the forum I see that it is a big problem, I hope that Google I solved it and soon, what else can we do?

Another Google Home First Generation no longerresponding to my requests. If Google issue a firmware update will it install automatically?

Same here. I can cast to speaker, but it will not respond to any voice commands. I've spend hours resetting it. Why can't Google issue comms to let it's customer's know there's an issue and when a fix will be issued.

Mine too. Lights respond to voice, casting works from other devices, but will not answer me. Cannot set or check alarms etc. Have tried reboots and resets but still the same problem.

Come on Google, stop blaming your customers and asking them to do silly stuff like try different networks and check the firmware. You have enough people on this for telling you there's a issue. Now please tell us you're working on a fix and when it'll be pushed out.

Right. I don't want to buy another smart speaker, so thank you to Google for taking the necessary steps.

And indeed, avoid giving useless advice such as: factory reset and network switch.

Is this a problem with commands being issued to certain devices attached to a customer's Google Nest "home/structure"?

We have no problems with our Nest Hubs responding, but we're only using them to display our old and new Google Nest cameras and doorbells, answer questions, play streaming services like Hulu and Netflix, and issue broadcasts.

Same is happening to me but not only on Google home 1st Gen but also on other devices. Sometimes they respond but you have to try many times.

Smart speakers will not respond to voice commands but light up to show they can hear you speaking, and the can play music via cast function.

Devices show up in home absolutely fine.

When can we expect a fix  Google ?

Update : as of this afternoon, my speaker has started responding. Hope others have had a similar result.

Thank a lot, It is the last firmware that Google released and it is the one I have, in my case no solution yet

Burnsie83

I think this is related to when I had to restart my router but my Google home device is not responding to my voice.

The microphone is not muted

When I ask Google to play music, turn on lights etc, the four lights on top of the device come on like usual and spin like it to thinking, but then they go off and nothing happens.

This has happened previously and I was advised to perform a factory reset which I did and this rectified the problem. However, on completing the factory reset today (Holding the mic button down until the orange lights go around the clock) I added the speaker again in my home assistant and the exact same problem persists

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you in advance

Same issues thought I was going crazy. My other (newer but same original model) is fine, my original few year old release model is dead in the water in terms of responding despite adding back after a factory reset
