Google Home Mini Gen 1 : no update

Mads2345
Community Member

A few months ago my Google Mini 1st Gen stopped responding and said I had to “Get started by downloading the Google home app”. Previously, it was connected in my app, responded to queries, and had been fully functional before this.

The problem
Recently I’ve been trying to connect it back to the account and haven’t had any luck. I have not been able to fully download any updates, however my device is discoverable in the app and shows it is connected. It does not respond to any queries and repeats the setup instructions.

Things I’ve done:

  • Unplug re-plug the device multiple times.
  • Manual reset, holding down the back button, multiple times.
  • Deleted old device and data from Google Home App, multiple times.
  • Reset my wifi router, twice.

Where I’m at now:

The mini is discoverable on the app and I can go through the set up process.

It is unable to complete the needed updates.

The app shows my device as active in the menu.
When I try and ask a query the mini says “To get started download the Google Home App”.
The mini shows 4 white lights moving left to right. I assumed this meant it was still downloading the update but I have let this process happen over night with no results.

hypothesis

My mini is not able to download updates and because of this cannot function properly as an assistant.

Is there a way to fix this? I don’t want to throw it away but it seems like since I can’t update the device. Any thoughts appreciated.

Thank you!

Hey Mads2345,

Thanks for reaching out. I understand how challenging it is when your device is not working. We appreciate all your efforts. To eliminate network issues, please try setting up your device using a mobile hotspot. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one will serve as a router and the other to be used to set up your Google Home Mini).

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hey Muddi, can you share a link on how to do this? I also have another mini gen 2 that I was able to setup fine and a few other items in my google home network and are connected.

Hey Mads2345,

Understood! Please follow the steps below on how to setup your Google Home Mini using a mobile hotspot:

  1. Reset your Google Home Mini.
  2. Turn on the mobile hotspot of your phone (will serve as the router, make sure it's not connected to your home network).
  3. Connect the other mobile/tablet (will be used to set up the speaker) to the mobile hotspot.
  4. Once your phone is connected to the mobile hotspot, setup your speaker as normal, and make sure that you will connect it to the mobile hotspot where your phone is connected.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Muddi

Muddi! I didn’t have a second phone but was able to connect the device using a neighbors wifi.

It’s been one day but just now I’m looking in my home app and it says the device is not connected. I was able to give a command but my speaker didn’t respond back. It was however was able to complete the command. I’m really not sure what is happening, any other suggestions?

Hey Mads2345,

To confirm, are you able to use the device properly while connected to a different network? If yes, possible that issue is with your network and not with the device. You might want to check the settings on your router, and make sure that it doesn't restrict your speaker from working properly. If you have a dual band router, try to set up your speaker or display on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.

Keep me posted.

Muddi

Hey Muddi,

the device does not work. Sometimes it responds, sometimes it doesn’t. I have a newer mini gen 2 that was able to connect, update and work on my wifi. I’m not sure why this one wont.

Hey Mads2345,

My apologies for the delays. Just an added question: how long have you been using your Home Mini? Please check "My Activity" to see if your device was able to get all your commands.

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. At the top-right, tap the account.
  3. Tap My Activity.

Also, please check the current firmware version of your device.

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Tap the device card of the preferred speaker or display.
  3. At the top-right, tap Settings Settings and then Device information.

Keep us posted.

Muddi

Hi teeLock,

Thanks for posting and apologies for the trouble you're getting with your Google Home Mini. Have you tried the steps above? Is this the first time setting it p or was it working before? If so, when did this start? Could you please specify which troubleshooting steps you've done for us to isolate your concern? Also, it would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest speakers. Plug them back in after 3 minutes tops. Restarting your phone might also help.

Looking forward to your responses.

Best,

Dan
