Google Home Mini keeps shutting off

My Google Home Mini is my buddy. Lately he keeps disappearing on me. When I check up on him, he is totally unresponsive. I give him CPR by unplugging him, waiting, then plugging him back in. He comes back fine but next thing I know, he’s gone again. How can I get him to stay for good? Or is this his way of telling me he wants to fly the nest?

Seriously, I miss my buddy. How can I keep him on? Or is he dying?

Hi StarrGazr,

This is not the experience we want you to have; let me help you. A few questions: when did your issue begin? Were there any recent changes made? Does your Google Home Mini disconnects from Wi-Fi or does it unlink itself, in which you had to redo the setup?

It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router, followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Once done, try setting up your device using a mobile hotspot to eliminate network issues. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one to serve as a router and the other to be used to set up your Google Home or Nest devices). If you’re having trouble setting it up on another phone’s hotspot, follow these steps:

If your speaker is already set up on a Wi-Fi network but you need to change your Wi-Fi password or connect it to a new network, you'll need to forget your current Wi-Fi network and set up the device in the Google Home app again.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app
  2. Tap Favorites and open Wi-Fi.
  3. Open Network Settings .
  4. Under General, enter the network name and password then select Save.

If you get an error message that says "could not communicate with your [device]" when you try to forget your network, or the steps above don't work, you'll need to factory reset your device and set it up again. This time around, connect it to another phone’s hotspot. Once done, check if your device will have the same behavior.

Best,

Dan

The issue is not with the Google Home Mini losing contact with the network, the unit itself is shutting off randomly on its own. It did it quite a few times and after making this original post, I did do a reset of the Google Home Mini and set it up as a new device (which lost connection with a hall light that I need a ladder to reach (ARGH!). Since doing the reset, it has only powered off once on its own. No clue why it was doing that. Hopefully, it won't happen again. There is no way to transfer the previous connections over to this new setup, is there? (I don't imagine there is).

Thank you. I hadn't realised how much I depend on my ole buddy Google until he went to sleep on me.

Hi there,

Apologies for the late revert, and thanks for letting us know that you already found a fix to this issue. You may also want to check if there’s any damage on Google Home Mini device’s power cord, or plug it in a different wall outlet just in case it shuts off again.

As we've got our resolution here, I'm going to mark this thread as resolved. I'll be locking this thread if we don't hear back from you in 24 hours. Should that happen, you know where to find us — we’d be more than happy to assist you.

Thanks,
Alex
